二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Almost everyone has heard the expression, “the calm before the storm”. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.

British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static and the winds would drop.

But why is it often so calm before a storm?

Science has given us the answer. According to US infotainment (资讯娱乐) website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, draw in all the warm and humid air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”.

Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air descends (下降), it becomes warm and dry. Warm, dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.

This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds.

The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First, count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. Roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about 3 kilometers away. A good gauge (评估) is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms are preceded by calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and chilling (寒冷的) winds. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature’s temper (脾气).

1What is the main idea of Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A.To explain how a storm comes into being.

B.To support previous research on storm clouds.

C.To explain why a peaceful period occurs before a storm.

D.To show how dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.

2If there are 15 seconds between a flash of lightning and a thunder clap, how far away is the storm?

    A.Three kilometers. B.Four kilometers.

    C.Five kilometers. D.Six kilometers.

3What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.It is not always quiet before a storm.

B.Storms have a big influence on life.

C.Heavy storms don’t usually last for a long time.

D.Weather reports may fail to predict a storm.

  • 27、   You might be familiar with the experience of looking through your Facebook, only to feel like everyone else's life is better than yours

But such "social comparisons" may be connected with a higher likelihood of having depressionThat's one finding from a new study that proved social media behavior has a connection with the mental(精神的)health condition

In the study, the researchers studies information from around 500 undergraduate students who actively used Facebook,Twitter,Instagram or Snapchat and completed an online survey to examine certain social media behavior,as well as symptoms (症状)of depression

The researchers found that people's reasons for using social media -whether it was out of boredom,or for entertainment or news -were not connected with depression. But how they were using social media was, indeed, connected to the condition

The finding that people with depression were less likely to post photos of themselves with others may be related to the tendency (倾向)for people with depression to isolate themselves, said Anthony Bobinson,a psychology student at Texas State University

In any case,it's not good to compare yourself to others who seem "better off" than youBobinson added."People want to make themselves look better off than they really are on social media" He said."This is not someone's 'real life. It's important to recognize that"

The researchers also stressed that their findings didn't mean that social media use is necessarily a bad thing

"I don't think it's always bad," Howard, one of the researchers, said."It can be bad,but it can also provide social supportIt can give people a way to be around people that are similar to them." FinallyHoward hopes the study leads to ideas that may teach people how to use technology better rather than taking it away

1What did the researchers want to know through the study

    A.The effects of social media

    B.The benefits of social media

    C.Why people use social media

    D.How people use social media

2What do the underlined words "isolate themselves" probably mean

    A.Make themselves better

    B.Make themselves alone

    C.Make themselves worse

    D.Make themselves popular

3What did Robinson think of comparing with those who are better than us on social media

    A.It is unusual

    B.It is necessary

    C.It is interesting

    D.It is meaningless

4The researchers' attitude towards social media can be described as

    A.fair

    B.unclear

    C.doubtful

    D.confident

  • 28、   There’s a good chance something you've bought online has been in the hands of a “ picker” first. These are the workers in warehouses(仓库)who pick, pack and ship all those things we’re ordering.

At Amazon and other companies, they’re working side by side with robots. Experts say while the robots are replacing some human workers, the machines aren't quite ready to take over completely.

When a robot finds its storage unit, it slides underneath, lifts it up and then delivers it to a worker they’re called pickers. On a recent day, the computer told a picker to grab what looked like a fantasy board (棋盘)game. The picker found it, canned it and placed it on the conveyor belt.

In a traditional fulfillment center where the associate would walk to the different items , it can take hours to fulfill a customer order. “ Robinson says.

Now, with the help of robots, that task takes minutes and fewer humans.

So is this a sign we're entering a new industrial revolution?

“It’s definitely going to take over a lot of jobs. " says Karen Myers, a scientist at SRI, one of Silicon Valley's oldest research centers.

At the same time, she says, we're running against the limits of technology. Take “the picker” at the Amazon fulfillment center. Myers says those skills are proving to be uniquely human.

“Our fingers are incredibly flexible and the current generation of robotic operators, they’re getting much, much better,” she says. “But they're just not quite there yet. ”

    There’s also the robot’s brain.

Remember that board game the Amazon worker was looking for? She could barely see the box filled into the storage bin — but she could tell it was a board game. Robots can’t do that.

Technologists say that, increasingly, humans will work side by side with robots — instead of robots working alone.

Amazon says robots and humans enabled the Tracy warehouse to fulfill customer orders faster. That means more customers and more human workers.

1A picker does some tasks except  .

    A. picking goods B. producing goods C. spotting goods D. packing goods

2With the help of robots, some tasks are   .

3Compared with robots, humans are more   .

    A. powerful B. artificial C. flexible D. energetic

While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

  • 39、   Roman was the school tough(厉害的) guy because his father was a tough guy. If anyone dared to disobey (不服从)him, they received a beating.

Until Victor arrived. No one would have said that Victor or his dad looked like tough guys : they were very thin and had no muscles . however, this was what Victor said to Ramon when Roman went up to him to make him afraid .

“Hey , new kid. You should know that I am the leader , and I am the toughest guy here.”

“You might be the leader but I am the toughest guy here.”

That was when Victor got his first beating .The second was the day Ramon tried to take a girl’s sandwich from her .

“This girl is a friend of mine and I am the toughest guy in school .So she will not give you her sandwich.” ---were Victor’s last words before the blows started raining down on him.

His third beating came when he did not want to hand over his own sandwich .

“Tough guys like my dad and me do not steal from others ,and you are supposed to be a tough guy too ?” he replied .

Victor got hit regularly ,but he never backed down(临阵退缩) . His bravery in protecting those weaker than him began to impress the rest of his classmates , and he soon gained admirers. Lots of other children began to play with him , so Ramon had even fewer chances to hit Vitor and his friends .

One day ,at the school door ,Ramon’s dad asked him who Victor was .

“That little boy is the tough boy who is the new boss of the playground ?” said Ramon’s father . “You are useless. I am going to hit you and show you what a tough guy really is .”

  • 40、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为150左右。

Last year, I spent my holiday in an unfamiliar neighborhood in Lakewood, New Jersey. We rented a house so that some of our children and grandchildren could join us. Everyone in the area was super friendly, offering to come to introduce themselves to us and to ensure that we would make full use of their hospitality, whether to borrow something or to send the kids to play in their yards. We were excited and impressed and immediately began to see if there were any houses for sale in the neighborhood!

The next door to us was particularly fascinating (to visit not to buy). In the yard, there was a tennis court, a swing set and various toys and games that were particularly popular with young children. The owner was also very friendly and invited the kids to come over and play.

They didn't have to be asked twice. They played for hours on end. While we relaxed in our yard, perhaps a little too comfortable, perhaps enjoying each other's company a little too much, perhaps forgetting that young children can't be left too long without adults looking after them.

Apparently, a small fight broke out between the boy of the next door and one of my five-year-old grandsons. My 10-year-old grandson immediately jumped to his cousin's defense and pushed the other boy. At this point, the mother next door was forced to intervene (调停).

And the neighbor came over to speak to us. Now when I try to imagine myself: in that position, I imagine all sorts of negative and aggressive ways to deal with it --- I would have been very angry and complained about the bad behavior of these visiting children, and definitely sent them home.

Paragraph 1: What she did was quite opposite. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Honestly, I owed my thanks to the neighbor. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
