27、   Winston Churchill is well-known as a statesman, politician and as the British Prime Minister during most of the Second World War. He is especially famous for his speeches which many believe made people even more determined to defeat the enemy. Many of these speeches contained lines which are remembered even today.

Churchill made one of his greatest speeches in 1940. The country had been at war for over eight months, and he knew that it would suffer many great defeats before it would begin to win the war. Soon 13 May 1940 he promised the House of Commons: "I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined the Government, 'hare nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.' "

A month later, the Germany army had advanced across northern Europe, and the British Army had withdrawn to the coast of the English Channel. But Churchill encouraged people that this was only a temporary defeat in a speech which included the words, "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the field and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall near surrender."

On 18 June 1940, Churchill gave another fine speech when he drew attention to the courage of everyone defending Britain. "In years to come,"" he said, "men will say, 'This was their finest hour.' "

The Germans continued their attacks on Britain from the air. A small number of pilots resisted the much larger German Air Force. Germany lost many airplanes, and was to forced to change their strategy. Britain was no longer threatened by an early invasion, and on 20 Augusts 1940, be said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

Many people believe that Churchill's leadership inspired people to remain brave in the face of Nazi Germany. His speeches are still remembered and quoted to today, and remain some of the finest examples of spoken English.

28、Since the novel coronavirus shutdowns have canceled thousands of graduation ceremonies across the country, these devoted Ohio bus drivers went above and beyond the call of duty to honor their senior high school students.

In a heartfelt display of love and affection the Loveland High School’s transportation department arranged 22 of their buses to spell out “2020” when viewed from above.

Jim Barrett, the school’s art and photography teacher, then used an aerial drone (无人机) to capture footage of the bus drivers waving up at the camera from in between the buses.

The school later published it to social media as a means of saluting the 392 graduating students, many of whom the drivers have known since grade school.

29、   Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to cool it down a bit before drinking.

Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65°C, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus（食道）. The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70℃ or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America.

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages（饮料）at very high temperatures.

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60℃. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature greatly. However, tea-drinkers in Iran often enjoy their beverages at temperatures close to 70℃.

The researchers found that South Americans not only drink their very hot beverages, they also drink them through a metal straw. This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic（致癌的）. The WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink.

The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drink itself, that appears to be responsible.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
