27、Steel Vengeance, a world-record-breaking hybrid roller coaster, recently made its first public appearance at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio.
The ride is constructed from both wood and steel (钢). A steel running track on a huge wooden base allows the ride to provide the types of twists (扭转) and turns that are not possible on wooden roller coasters.
Steel Vengeance breaks ten world records, including tallest, fastest, and longest hybrid roller coaster. “It is just a roller coaster that you want to ride again and again,” said Tony Clark, director of communications at Cedar Point. The 90-degree, 200-foot drop on the first hill takes your breath away.
At a recent event at Cedar Point, I experienced the excitement of the new ride first-hand. Thanks to my strong heart, I had a really cool time!
THE MAKING OF VENGEANCE
“The biggest part of making a roller coaster is planning it,” Clark said.
Jason McClure, general manager of Cedar Point, added: “We have to get a main idea of the basics of the coaster and then plan a budget.”
WOOD, STEEL, AND HARD WORK
Rocky Mountain Construction designed and built Steel Vengeance. About 1.2 million pounds of steel and 1.4 million boards of wood were used to build the ride.
Fred Grubb, co-founder of Rocky Mountain, noted that “people who design roller coasters for my company have to have first-hand experience building things with their hands, not just hold an engineering degree. When you have built things for yourself, you get it, and understand what will work.”
Clark was pleased with the results. “We at Cedar Point are so happy with how Steel Vengeance turned out,” he said.
McClure added: “What we put into this roller coaster was wood, steel, and a lot of hard work.”
【1】What can we learn about Steel Vengeance?
A.It is going through tests.
B.It belongs to Rocky Mountain.
C.It is made from both steel and wood.
D.It was mainly designed by Fred Grubb.
【2】What advantage does Steel Vengeance have over wooden roller coasters?

A.Worried.
B.Excited.
C.Frightened.
D.Shocked.
【4】People who design roller coasters for Rocky Mountain must _____.

28、In 2004, Pen Hadow became the first person to trek (跋涉) to the North Pole alone, without being resupplied on the way. That meant swimming through unimaginably cold waters, and risking encounters with polar bears. Just eight months later, he made a similar trip to the South Pole. Now he is back in the Arctic again, preparing for an expedition (远征) he says is even more ambitious. Explorers are confident, driven individuals. They have to be. This time, however, more significance is attached. Pen and two colleagues will set out on a three-month, 1000-kilometre trek to the North Pole, taking detailed measurements of the thickness and density of the ice. Nobody has ever done this before, and he knows the results will be of vital significance to the scientific community. This will be the truest picture yet of what global warming is doing to the ice that covers the polar region.
Pen and his wife, Mary, live in the country with their two children. “It’s much harder to be away from them this time,” he admits. They were one and five when I last went, and I made a mistake in the way I said goodbye. I thought it would be a good idea to say to my son, “You’re the man of the house now, look after your mum and your sister.” He absolutely took it to heart, asking his mum how she was all the time, but the stress eventually became too much. While it was well intentioned, it was an unfair thing to do.
He is spending these last days before departure preparing his things. “Out on the ice, one is virtually unable to mend things or do anything that isn’t absolutely straightforward,” he says. With him will be Ann Daniels, one of the world’s leading polar explorers, and the photographer, Martin Hartley. They will be supported by a crew of six, flying in supplies. Being part of a team is actually more stressful to someone with his mentality, says Pen, and something else is on his mind too. “I’m going to be 47 on Thursday. I’ve done far less training than I’m comfortable with.” Why? “Organisational things always seem more urgent. So I’m almost fearful of what I’m going to ask of myself.”
Pen believes his mission reconnects exploration with the search for knowledge that drove previous generations into the unknown. “Making it to the North Pole was a personal ambition,’”he admits, “and of limited value to anyone beyond the polar adventuring community. This time, scientists will profit from the data, and we’re creating a platform in which to engage as many people as possible in what’s happening in the Arctic Ocean. This is important work, and nobody can do it but us,” he says. “Our skills, which are otherwise not that necessary, have become really relevant. Suddenly, we’re socially useful again.”
【1】In the first paragraph, what do we learn about Pen Hadow’s opinion of the new expedition?
A.He feels certain that it will be stressful.
B.He is aware of the huge importance of its aims.
C.He thinks it may be harder than his previous journeys.
D.He is less than confident of the scientific work it involves.
【2】What does “took it to heart” (in paragraph 2) mean?
A.He started to feel unwell.
B.He memorised his father’s words.
C.He was afraid of the responsibility.
D.He carried out his father’s words carefully.
【3】What is worrying Pen about the new expedition?
A.Whether he will be mentally prepared
B.Whether he will still be fit enough to take part.
C.Whether the arrangements he has made will turn out well.
D.Whether the equipment will work properly in icy conditions.
【4】When he compares the new expedition to his previous ones, Pen feels ________.
A.uncertain if it will collect information.
B.doubtful about its long-term usefulness
C.pleased that more people will benefit from it
D.relieved that the general public will be more supportive
29、 Finland is the happiest place on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report of 156 nations.
The report, released Wednesday by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks the countries of the world based on six different categories of well-being: income, freedom, trust, life expectancy, generosity and social support. This year's report also pays special attention to the happiness of each country’s immigrants.
The U.S. dropped four spots from 2017 and landed in 18th place, and last year’s winner, Norway, came in second place — followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.
“The top five countries all have almost equally high values for the six factors found to support happiness, and four of these countries—Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland — have been in first place in the six World Happiness Report rankings since the first report" in 2012, ”co-editor John Helliwell told CNN. “In a division with such excellent teams, changes in the top spot are to be expected."
Rounding out the top 10 happiest countries was Canada in sixth place, then New Zealand, Sweden and Australia. The order of the top 10 nations changed from the 2017 list but the countries did not, according to the report. They were also 10 of the 11 top spots in the immigrant happiness category (including Mexico — 24th overall, but 10th in immigration).
“The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born,” Helliwell said in a statement. “Although immigrants come from countries with very different levels of happiness, their reported life evaluations resemble those of other residents in their new countries. Those who move to happier countries gain, while those who move to less happy countries lose.”
Other major world powers placed in significantly low spots on the list. Germany came in 15th, the UK was 19th — followed by Japan in 54th place, Russia in 59th and China in 86th.
The report, based on surveys completed by citizen volunteers, came just under a week before World Happiness Day on March 20, when the UN declared to recognize “the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives”
【1】The US ranked ______ in 2017.
A.18 B.10
C.14 D.22
【2】What is the most significant finding of the report?
A.That immigrants are different from residents in the country.
B.That immigrants and locals feel the similar level of happiness.
C.That immigrants become happy when they leave the country.
D.That immigrants come from countries with different levels of happiness.
【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Happiness is no less important than any other aspect in life.
B.People’s happiness and well-being should be considered when it comes to policy-making.
C.The happiness report came under a week before World Happiness Day.
D.What the UN declared was beneficial to all human beings.
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.World Happiness Day. B.Happiness — forever pursuit.
C.The 2018 World Happiness Report. D.What's your happiness index(指数)?

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 【1】. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 【4】 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.
I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 【5】. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching it to the key ring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.
The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.
Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.
But there is a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't like my chances of actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choice did I have?
My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is the biggest hole on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.
I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest.
