二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed that this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.” After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”

The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (厢式货车). In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes (刹车) and the gas pedal (油门). Holly was unhurt physically but when we reached her, she was crying and saying: “Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.

Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and ran into a tree that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home, my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.”

Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. I remember how sad Holly was on the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly thinks back on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of property.

1What can we know about the crash?

A.The family van was parked in the way. B.Holly was badly hurt.

C.Holly’s truck ran into a fallen tree on the road. D.Holly mistook the gas pedal for the brakes.

2Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “moistened” ?

    A.Rolled. B.Became wet. C.Were closed. D.Shined.

3What does the author intend to show us in this passage?

A.Everyone will make mistakes. B.Never let young children drive too early.

C.Love is more important than possessions. D.Girls are easily hurt.

4Which is the best title of the passage?

A.What Really Matters B.How to Educate Children

C.How to be a father D.A terrible accident

  • 27、Did anyone find the names of “Great Britain”, “the United Kingdom”, “England” and “the British commonwealth” which have the same meaning? Strictly speaking, these names all refer to something different. None of them are exactly the same as any of the others.

The British isles refer to the main islands and several thousand small ones as well, which you can see on the map. Great Britain, or Britain, refers to the larger of the two main islands. But the word “Britain” is often used as a short form for the United Kingdom or you call it the UK .

Now as for England, it refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and the official name of the country, which many people popularly refer to England.

Finally, the Britain commonwealth is the usual name for what is left of the British Empire. This change shows the weakening of British Empire and the rising of the national liberation movements throughout the world today.

1According to the passage, we know that ____ .

    A. Great Britain has the same meaning as Britain

    B. the United Kingdom has the same meaning as Britain or England

    C. all the names in the first paragraph have the same meaning

    D. all the names refer to England

2It is clear that the British isles refer to ____ .

    A. Britain, England and the UK.

    B. the two main islands and thousands of small ones

    C. three countries and several islands

    D. Great Britain or the United Kingdom

3Which of the following shows the right relationship (关系) between the British isles (BI), Britain (B) and England (E)?

  • 28、The History Of Chocolate

The Theobroma Cacao tree provides us with one of the world’s mest delicious foods—chocolate. The tree originally comes from the Amazon region of South America. Hand-sized pods(菜)that grow on the tree contain cacao seeds-often “cocoa heans. ”1

The earliest use of cacao beans dates back to around 1000 B. C. when the Mayan people used cocoa as a drink. It is believed that drinking cups of cocoa was important on occasions such as wedding ceremonies. 2 In Peru, for example, eating or drinking a mixture of chocolate and chili was said to be good for the stomach.

Christopher Columbus, the famous Spanish explorer, made his fourth voyage across the Atlantic in the early 1500s and arrived in-Central America. 3  Cocoa beans were used as money in many parts of Central America.

In the sixteenth century, chocolate was taken back to Spain by Hernando Cortez, another explorer. 4 It later spread to France in the seventeenth century. The popularity of chocolate continued to spread further across Europe and the Americas. The only Asian country to accept it at that time, though, was the Philippines, which the Spanish invaded in the sixteenth century.

5 Slaves’ were brought to the Americas from Africa to farm the cocoa. Eventually, the cacao tree was taken to Africa. Today. Africa provides almost seventy percent of the world’s cacao, compared with one and a half percent from Mexico. Who would have thought that chocolate bars had so much history?

    A. Spain was a great country at that time.

    B. These seeds are used to make chocolate.

    C. These seeds are originally from South America.

    D. It was at this time that he first discovered the value of cocoa beans.

    E. Drinking cocoa was also believed to have positive effects on health.

    F. The people there added other things such as sugar to make it sweet.

    G. As chocolate became more popular, more people are needed to plant coco.

  • 29、   On the night of August 24, 2001, my last night of freedom before my freshman of high school started, everything changed when my friend's car hit a guardrail(护栏) with me inside.

I lost most of my right leg. At the hospital, I just kept telling myself to hold on. Weeks later I made a deal with the hospital staff that once I could roll onto my side, I could be discharged. I am proud to say that just one short week later, I was going home. The day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to never give up and to always live life to the fullest.

In February of 2013, my life was forever changed when I attended the Executive Assistant Organization's Behind Every Leader event. During the conference, a sweet lady by the name of Alisson Frew dared to ask me why I did not wear a prosthesis(假肢). My short and simple answer was, "I don't have sixty thousand dollars." The next morning I was in tears as I learned that Alisson, Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline, and a dozen other people, had bought a prosthesis for me. From the first step, it was apparent to me just how much this would mean to me.

For a year I adjusted to the leg and settled into everyday life, until one day I realized I was making a life but not living one. After almost 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I was empowered! I desired to help those around me, to have them experience this unbelievable feeling for themselves.

In April of 2014, I started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me on a poster at her favourite clothing store and say, "Wow, she is amazing, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability."

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

  • 39、DirectionsRead the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

There are various means consumers can do if they find that an item they bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer’s claims. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the“higher up”his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example,“The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear”is better than“This stereo does not work.”The store manager may advice the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go to a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumer’s rights.
