  • 26、Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. 【1】.

Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream at low prices. 【2】, then probably children would buy less take-away food.

【3】. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If parents often give their children fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, they will go for sweet and salty foods, and children will find it hard to get rid of the habit.

There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. 【4】. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.

The above are the main reasons for this problem. 【5】, as well as forcing them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.

A.There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight

B.Adults are becoming fatter and unhealthier too

C.If there were fewer of these restaurants

D.So we have to encourage young people to be more active

E.Not only is this an unhealthy pastime (消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food

F.I feel there are a number of reasons for this

G.It’s a good idea to allow children to eat what they choose

  • 27、This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job: Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA, which is called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study.

Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery. The first group of 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study. Each participant will receive a reward of about $18,500.

The researchers are studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space, which will help astronauts in future missions. Apparently being in bed for a long time is similar enough to being in gravity-less space.

Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tilted(倾斜)down six degrees, much like conditions in space. Without gravity sending blood to the legs, astronauts’ heads are filled with fluids, resulting in “puffy-head, bird-legs” syndrome, according to the NASA website. Researchers will study how the shifts in fluid affect participants’ bodies, as well as possible bone and muscle loss.

Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, reading or doing any other activities while lying down alone in bed to overcome the extreme boredom.

Participants also need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight. During the study, they will spend 30 minutes a day in what is called a “short-arm human centrifuge(离心机)”, which produces artificial gravity and distributes fluids from the head back into the body.

If interested in the project, you can apply and click here.

【1】What do we know about the project of NASA?

A.It will cost $18,500 in all.

B.It is carried out in America.

C.It is now seeking 12 men test subjects.

D.It takes subjects three months to be in the project.

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.All the participants will be tested in space.

B.The research is of little use to astronauts in future missions.

C.Participants being tested are required to be fully concentrated.

D.Shifts in fluid together with bone and muscle loss will be studied.

【3】Who is the most likely to be accepted as a participant in the project?

    A.Kate, a teacher, obese.

    B.Jack, a teenager, healthy.

    C.Mary, in her thirties, athletic.

    D.Tom, a heavy smoker, knowledgeable.

【4】What is the passage intended to do?

    A.To study “puffy-head, bird-legs” syndrome.

B.To introduce a project of NASA to readers.

C.To persuade women to participate in the project.

D.To inform readers of the principles of centrifuge.

  • 28、   When you are sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins (页边的空白处) of your notebooks? If so, you are doodling. Many people think of doodling as a distraction (分心) from more important things. 1.2.In 2009 researchers asked two groups of people to listen to a phone message. One group was encouraged to doodle, but the other was not. Neither group knew that it would be asked to remember information from the message. But the group that doodled remembered 29% more.

Other people have suggested other uses for doodling. Jesse Prinz, a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. 3 When you come back, you'll have a fresh perspective (观点) and figure out an answer more quickly.

An author named Sunni Brown wrote a book on doodling. She argues that doodling is a tool that can help people think. 4 In fact, she runs a business that helps companies improve organization and planning through doodling.

Brown believes doodling is helpful because it includes many ways of learning. You learn in four ways: seeing, hearing, reading or writing, and through movement. The more ways you use, the better you learn. And when you doodle while listening to a lecture, you use all four.

You might think that being good at drawing is important for doodling. But if the point of doodling is to help you think, then it doesn’t matter what the picture looks like.  5 So next time you need help focusing, pick up a pen and doodle away!

A.And many experts agree with this.

B.Even if you're not an artist, doodling can help you.

C.Walking away from a problem to draw might actually help you solve it.

D.But it might be just the opposite.

E.One study shows that doodling may help you remember things you hear.

F.She admits that people see doodling as doing nothing, but she wants to change that.

G.Doodling can help you achieve more than you imagine.

  • 29、   By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you. Revealing(泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable(易受伤害的)to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

1Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks _________.

    A.help students finish their homework

    B.offer professionals good chances

    C.benefit users in various ways

D.guide users to make right choices users to make right choices

  • 35、

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.
