二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Microplastics, those lasting relics of modern times, have occupied seemingly every part of the planet today, including the most distant reaches.

The Arctic is far from clean, though it's remote and rarely stepped in by visitors. Melanie Bergmann, a marine ecologist with the Alfred Wegener Institute, and her colleagues had been studying plastics on the Arctic seafloor since 2002. Large amounts turned up everywhere they looked. In deep sea, they found about 6,000 particles(颗粒)in every 2.2 pounds of mud. Sea ice was even more loaded—as much as 12,000 pieces per 34 ounces of melted ice.

Scientists measured microplastics in snow from this distant location and found levels they conclude could only have caught rides on the wind. The study raises concerns about how much microplastics pollute the atmosphere, bringing a potential health risk to people and animals that breathe them in. But they are less worried about the threat that breathed-in pollutants have to wildlife than about polluted snow leaving its load into water. “From an ecosystem angle, our biggest concern is what happens when that snow melts as the climate warms up,” Bergmann says.

The science on the health effects of microplastics is still going on. “For human health, we currently know very little,” says microplastics researcher Chelsea Rochman. "There is a lot of concern because we know we are exposed…. For wildlife, we know that microplastics may go into every level of the food chain.” Laboratory studies find some physical and chemical effects from microplastics exposure, but the findings vary by the plastic type, shape and size. “There's much more we need to do to clearly understand the effects," he says. "And further experiments will be carried out soon with application for equipment and financial support approved.”

Even worse is the threat from airborne nanoplastics in the area—too small to be noticed and may actually enter cells. Research on that also has been conducted and it could be a bigger problem, according to Rochman.

【1】What is the data in paragraph 2 used to show?

A.Visitors rarely step into the Arctic.

B.Sea ice is more polluted than deep sea.

C.Microplastics are everywhere in the world.

D.The Arctic suffers serious microplastics pollution.

    【2】What wories the scientists most?

    A.Microplastics' entering the water ecosystem.

    B.Human beings' breathing microplastics in.

    C.Wildlife's being threatened by micropollutants.

    D.Microplastics pollution's worsening global warming.

    【3】What do Rochman's words suggest?

    A.Their experiments lack financial support.

B.Effects of microplastics exposure are unknown.

C.Animals are in a more risky situation than man.

D.Microplastics' effects on health require more study.

【4】What will the following paragraphs talk about?

    A.Damage of microplastics to health.

    B.Appeals for environmental protection.

C.Findings about nanoplastics in the Arctic.

    D.Measures to solve microplastics pollution.

  • 27、   Sixth formers are to be quizzed on whether they can cook five hot meals and how often they should change their sheets, as part of a government-backed scheme to prepare them for university.

Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16―18 to ensure they feel comfortable with the prospect of leaving home. The course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach pupils how to manage their finances and how to live independently.

According to the course materials, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as “what is the price of a liter of milk?” and “list 5 hot meals you can cook from scratch” and “how often will you wash your sheets once you move out of home?”

Damian Hinds, the Education Secretary, said, “We are all very conscious that moving away from home and going to university is one of the most exciting things that happens in your life but it can also be very daunting.” Mr. Hinds said that when he got to university, he discovered he had “relied on my mum more than I realized I did”, adding, “I wish I could have cooked better.”

Earlier this year, ministers set up a new task force called the Education Transitions Network, which includes representatives from Universities UK, UCAS and the National Union of Students. It is part of a drive by the Department for Education to address the rise in students who report mental health issues during their time at university.

Data released earlier this year showed that the number of students declaring mental health problems on arrival at university has surged. Figures obtained showed a 73 percent rise between 2014―2015 and 2017―2018 in students stating that they had a condition such as depression or anxiety before starting their courses.

1What can we learn about the course?

A.It encourages students to leave home.

B.It is designed by the university students.

C.It helps students get ready for their college life.

D.It allows teachers to ask students familiar questions.

2Why does the author mention Damian in Paragraph 4?

A.To show the joy of campus life. B.To list the contents of the course.

C.To prove the necessity of the course. D.To present the importance of college life.

3Which of the following best explains “surged” underlined in the last paragraph?

    A.Increased. B.Dropped. C.Doubled. D.Remained.

  • 29、   Sometimes big ideas come in tiny packages. That’s true for Bryan Ware, the founder of the nonprofit organization The Crayon Initiative, which recycles the crayons children use at restaurants to give to children in need.

Ware, who has a background in producing and packaging, went out to dinner with his family one night when he took notice of a box of crayons on the table. The restaurant provided them and his boys used them to color on the paper tablecloth. There was nothing unusual about either of the two things. But Ware thought something more. Ware knew that most of the crayons at restaurants would be thrown away after their first use because people worried that germs on them might cause disease. While the wax of a crayon is easy to clean and doesn’t hold many germs, the wrapping paper is a different story.

So now Ware is trying to improve the situation. After speaking with a friend who works as a child life specialist at the University of San Francisco Medical Center, Ware decides to work with hospitals in the area to bring the crayons to their young patients. We know that child life specialists help sick children deal with the uncertainty of their conditions. They hold a child’s hand during medical treatment or provide food and clothing for his or her family members.

So far, The Crayon Initiative has donated over 20,000 packs of crayons to 38 hospitals in 17 states, but it’s the positive influence, not the number, that matters to Ware. Ware recently received a photo from a family whose daughter had unfortunately passed away. It was a picture of a plastic pencil box, and it was what the girl carried with her through her stay in hospital. Wherever she had to go, this was her little box of stuff to keep her happy. These kinds of stories make the effort all worthwhile for Ware.

1What can we infer from paragraph 2?

A.Ware didn’t think restaurants should provide crayons.

B.Used crayons with wrapping paper hold fewer germs.

C.Restaurants usually provide crayons for kids free of charge.

D.Ware’s idea about his organization came to him by accident.

2What do we know about child life specialists from the passage?

A.They help doctors look for cures for diseases.

B.They provide food and education for young patients.

C.They bring comfort to kids fighting against illness.

D.They need money to help poor kids pay hospital bills.

3Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Ways of Achieving a Big Dream

B.Recycling Crayons for a Good Cause

C.A Successful Man and His Magical Crayons

  • 33、There has, in recent years, been an outpouring of information about the impact of buildings on the natural environment. Information which explains and promotes green construction design strives to _________ others of its effectiveness and warns of the dangers of ignoring the issue. Seldom do these documents offer any advice to practitioners, such as those designing mechanical and electrical systems for a building, on how to use this knowledge on a _________ level.

Although there are a good many advocates of “green” construction in the architectural industry, able to list enough reasons why buildings should be designed in a (n) _________ way, that doesn’t translate into a booming green construction industry. Likewise, the fact that plenty of architectural firms have experience in green design is not enough to make green construction _________. The driving force behind whether a building is constructed with minimal environmental impact _________ the owner of the building; that is, the person financing the project. If the owner considers green design unimportant, or of secondary importance, then more than likely, it will not be _________ into the design.

The commissioning (委任) process plays a key role in _________ the owner gets the building he wants, in terms of design, costs and risk. Owners who _________ the commissioning process, or fail to take “green” issues into account when doing so, often run into trouble once their building is up and running. Materials and equipment are installed as planned, and, at first glance, appear to fulfil their purpose adequately. _________, in time, the owner realizes that operational and maintenance costs are higher than necessary, and that the occupants are dissatisfied with the results. These factors in turn lead to higher ownership costs as well as increased environmental impact.

In some cases, an owner may be __________ of the latest trends in green building design, which, however, does not necessarily lead to an interpretation that the client already has an idea of how green he intends the structure to be. Indeed, this initial interaction between owner and firm is the ideal time for a designer to outline and __________ the ways that green design can meet the client’s objectives. In this way, he may turn a project originally not   __________green design into a potential candidate.

Typically, when condiering whether or not to adopt a green __________, an owner will ask about additional costs or return for investment. In a typical project, landscape architects, mechanical and electrical engineers are not involved until a much later stage. However, in green design, they have a role to play from they outset, since green design demands__________between these disciplines, which requires additional cost. However, there are examples of green design which have demonstrated__________costs for long-term operation, ownership and even construnction.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

    Leeches as Medical Treatment

Leeches are small wormlike creatures that live in water and suck the blood of animals and humans. In the past, though, leeches were commonly used in medicine. Then advances in science led to other kinds of treatments, and leeches disappeared from the sick room. Now, however, they are making a comeback.

The use of leeches in medicine goes back at least 2,500 years. Doctors used them to treat the sick in ancient Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. It was believed in those days that taking blood from patients helped to bring their bodies back into balance. This belief and the practice of draining blood with leeches continued through the ages.

Another use of leeches has been investigated by a team of German doctors who study the ability of leeches to reduce pain. Their patients suffer from arthritis, a painful joint disease that often affects knees, shoulders, or fingers. When the German doctors put leeches on the arthritic knees of their patients, almost all of them felt immediate relief from the pain. Most of the patients continued to be pain-free for over a month and some for as long as six months.

Leeches have also proved indirectly useful in treating patients with heart and blood diseases. Since the 1880s, researchers have understood that certain chemicals in. leeches prevent blood from clotting or becoming hard. Many people with heart or blood problems live with a serious risk of the formation of blood clots, which can travel through the blood to the heart or brain and cause death. In the 1950s, a scientist identified the chemical in a leech that prevents clotting. Later studies led to experiments with the chemical and the development of a drug that thins the blood of patients who are at risk for blood clots.

Though doctors today do not view the use of leeches as the all-purpose treatment it once was, they now see that for certain problems, this ancient remedy may be valid after all.

  • 39、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That night, after a couple of restless hours, Dora woke up suddenly at midnight. She went to her bathroom. Stepping on the carpet she noticed it was damp. Looking out, she found that muddy water was inching up the wood-paneled walls! She ran to her father’s bedside. “Daddy, Daddy,” she cried, shaking him violently. “Wake up. There’s water in the house!”

Barefoot and wearing only shorts, Dykstra walked to the entrance and opened the door. What he saw shook him wide-awake. Duchess, their dog, was standing just outside the door, her feet in six inches of water. That meant the roadway, their only means of escape, was flooded. He hid his anxiety. They climbed up the ladder-like stairs to a loft (阁楼) above the living room. From there they could hear the water filling the room below, creeping (缓慢地行进) toward them. Suddenly the whole house trembled as if struck by an earthquake. The next instant they found themselves floating, and the wooden house being swept along the river! Terrified that the cabin would sink and take them down with it, Dykstra decided that they would have to get out. Wrapping his arms tightly round his daughter, he plunged (猛冲) into the icy water.

The house was behind them now, chasing them through the darkness. Before he could get out of its path, the house – pushed by the tremendous (巨大的) power of the water – pinned him at the trunk. His ribs (肋骨) were crushed. His left leg was broken. He lost consciousness. Then the house shifted, releasing him. Dora found herself drifting downstream, her unconscious father beside her. “Don’t die, Daddy!” she cried. “Please!”

Perhaps it was the cry of the little girl that stirred Dykstra to consciousness. In the pale moonlight, Dykstra spotted an island formed by some rubbish that had got caught in some treetops. Fighting against the current and his pain, he swam toward it. Dora climbed onto the small pile of timbers (木材) and pulled her father, who was fighting for breath, from the rushing water onto the timbers. Now, Dora realized, it was up to her to help him.
