二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Steel Vengeance, a world-record-breaking hybrid roller coaster, recently made its first public appearance at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio.

The ride is constructed from both wood and steel (钢). A steel running track on a huge wooden base allows the ride to provide the types of twists (扭转) and turns that are not possible on wooden roller coasters.

Steel Vengeance breaks ten world records, including tallest, fastest, and longest hybrid roller coaster. “It is just a roller coaster that you want to ride again and again,” said Tony Clark, director of communications at Cedar Point. The 90-degree, 200-foot drop on the first hill takes your breath away.

At a recent event at Cedar Point, I experienced the excitement of the new ride first-hand. Thanks to my strong heart, I had a really cool time!

    THE MAKING OF VENGEANCE

“The biggest part of making a roller coaster is planning it,” Clark said.

Jason McClure, general manager of Cedar Point, added: “We have to get a main idea of the basics of the coaster and then plan a budget.”

    WOOD, STEEL, AND HARD WORK

Rocky Mountain Construction designed and built Steel Vengeance. About 1.2 million pounds of steel and 1.4 million boards of wood were used to build the ride.

Fred Grubb, co-founder of Rocky Mountain, noted that “people who design roller coasters for my company have to have first-hand experience building things with their hands, not just hold an engineering degree. When you have built things for yourself, you get it, and understand what will work.”

Clark was pleased with the results. “We at Cedar Point are so happy with how Steel Vengeance turned out,” he said.

McClure added: “What we put into this roller coaster was wood, steel, and a lot of hard work.”

【1】What can we learn about Steel Vengeance?

    A.It is going through tests.

    B.It belongs to Rocky Mountain.

C.It is made from both steel and wood.

D.It was mainly designed by Fred Grubb.

【2】What advantage does Steel Vengeance have over wooden roller coasters?

    A.It will last longer.

    B.It cost less money.

C.It took less time to build.

D.It offers more kinds of twists.

【3】How did the author feel on Steel Vengeance?

    A.Worried.

    B.Excited.

    C.Frightened.

    D.Shocked.

【4】People who design roller coasters for Rocky Mountain must _____.

    A.hold an arts degree

    B.be roller coaster lovers

    C.be skillful at wood work

    D.have built things themselves

  • 27、   Looking at his pile of unpaid bills always makes Giuseppe Del Giudice feel uneasy.More often than not,Del Giudice leaves his paperwork undone and sweeps the floor or watches TV instead, waiting until the last moment to write the monthly checks.

Everyone procrastinates(拖延)."It's part of the human condition,"says procrastination researcher Tim Pychyl,"One of the ways we cope is avoidance, and that's what procrastination comes down to:We want to feel good now.The way to do that is avoid the task."You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation.

One that almost everyone procrastinates on is their wills.70 to 80 percent of people, when they pass away, have no will or an out-of-date or incomplete will.It leaves terrible situations. But death isn't actually the cause of avoidance.Research has shown that the top tasks people delay are cleaning, advancing their careers, taking care of their health, and planning their finances.

Some people welcome procrastination, believing that they perform better under pressure. But researchers don't agree with the idea.I did an experiment several years ago, putting procrastinators under restrictions of time,"says Joseph Ferrari,a psychology professor at DePaul University."They did worse than nonprocrastinators, but they thought they did better. They made more errors. They took longer."

Whatever the motivation, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you.Delaying a diet or exercise program may increase your risk of heart disease. Not having seen the doctor when your illness was easier to treat may shorten your life.Just thinking about what you haven't done may cause discomfort."Procrastinators higher levels of anxiety,"says Fuschia Sirois,a psychology lecturer at the of Sheffield."Some of the research has shown that this anxiety increases their possibility catching colds and experiencing many other health problems."

For those of us in need of motivation, the best advice might be to think small.

We used to believe behaviors follow attitude, but if you can start with a little bit of progress, that motivates you, Pychyl says.So if you have been procrastinating on starting an exercise routine, just put on your walking shoes. If you've been putting off a work project, reread your boss's notes about it.

Next, try sending yourself signals to motivate action. For instance, you might put your lights on a timed dimmer switch(变光开关)to encourage a fixed bedtime.Joel Anderson,a philosophy researcher-lecturer at Utrecht University, carried out an experiment around this concept, and it worked on most of his subjects."They formed an intention,"Anderson says. When the lights start to dim,I'll start going to bed."

Finally, reward yourself for each step you take toward your goal. After you've gone to the gym, take a relaxing bath. After you've paid the bills, watch your favorite TV show.(But don't try to convince yourself it will work the other way around!)

  • 28、   I watch from the wooden bench in my backyard as the water from the pipe quietly flows out onto the tomato plants. I watch the plants and rest easy, knowing the pipe is taking care of the plants. The drops soon seem to become rivers on the ground.

I see these red-brown ants, crawling(爬行) along around their home. What will happen when the water reaches the ants? Smelling the danger, these poor tiny creatures all run away from the water and rush back to their home. They spend their whole lives working together to create and make better things, but now they are facing the end of it all. I think this is just a reflection of the world. I keep watching as the water first attacks and then surrounds two ants. They struggle to stay floating as the water closes in on them, getting deeper and deeper. I try to get these two to come on my finger, but they refuse to let me save them. The water soon flows over them, as I remain helpless. Only then do they decide to climb onto my dirt-covered finger. Not until facing the moment of death would they trust one like me.

I check to see if they are alive, and both can move fine. Then I go to save other ants. However, the water washes everything away. How much I wish I could turn off this machine of death, but I cannot. I must complete my job.

It knocks me how much these little lives mean to me. When I was a small child, I would make a sport of killing them. Now, I can't hurt an insect, always thinking about what it would be like to be so small.

1What is the ants' first reaction as the water approaches them?

    A. They attempt to stop it.

    B. They seek help at once.

    C. They ignore it and continue to work.

    D. They try to avoid the danger caused by it.

2What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?

    A. Behind bad luck comes good luck.

    B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

    C. God helps those who help themselves.

    D. Life is likely to be affected by setbacks.

3How does the author help save the two ants?

    A. He turns off the water pipe. B. He helps them float on the water.

    C. He lets them climb onto his finger. D. He changes the direction of the water.

4What's the author's attitude towards those ants now?

    A. Sympathetic. B. Indifferent.

    C. Favorable. D. Cruel.

  • 29、A year ago, I decided to create a more environmentally friendly kitchen, focusing on reducing the single-use products such as plastic bags and paper towels. I’m not going to sugarcoat my experience. It takes com mitment and a willingness to change long-held habits. In creating my kitchen, I tried a lot of different alternative products and some plain old com mon sense; the result, however, has been worth the effort. I’m recycling more and relying less on single-use products and I’m saving money too.

I’m not kidding when I say that I used to really love plastic storage bags, so this was, perhaps, the biggest challenge for me. Switching to reusable storage bags is a financial investment, but the cos is reasonable considering that I previously spent at least $ 100 annually on single-use plastic bags and wrap. I willcheck online periodically for recycling updates, where a zero-waste box for kitchen items is offered, from party supplies to mixed-materialfood containers.

I’m a clean freak (怪人) and used to go through an amount of paper towels on a daily basis, butit’s easy enough to take old T-shirts ortowels and cutthem up to use to wipe down surfaces. I’m also a fan of bamboo paper towels, which have the look and feel of traditional paper towels, yet are made from a highly renewable source and also break down in just 45 days. Better yet, they can be reused up to 100 times. As for kitchen sponges (海绵擦), I keep an eye out for those made with natural and recyclable materials.

When purchasing household items online from companies like Amazon or Jet, I will ask to have them shipped in as few boxes as possible or as small a box as possible if a single item is to be sent. I’ll let the company know that they should pay more attention to how It is packaging items for delivery.

【1】What is the author’s main purpose of creating her kitchen?

    A.To save money.

B.To reduce waste and recycle more.

    C.To change her long-held habits.

D.To make it cleaner and more practical.

【2】What does the underlined word “sugarcoat” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.M ake attractive.

    B.Getinterested.

    C.Show off.

    D.Give up.

【3】In creating her kitchen, what does the author do?

A.Begins to recycle more single-use plastic bags.

B.Goes through an amount of paper towels on a daily basis.

C.Checks online periodically to buy zero-waste box.

D.Chooses to use the recyclable or reusable kitchen items.

【4】What can we learn about the author from the text?

    A.She has strong environmental awareness.

B.She is used to traditional paper towels.

C.She has a good knowledge of financialinvestment.

D.She prefers to have her purchases packed in small boxes.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”
