  • 26、Fear of missing out

It's Friday night. While many of your friends may celebrate by going to the movies or checking out a restaurant that's just opened, you've decided to spend this special night of the week by yourself. The night is yours to enjoy. If you think this sounds relaxing, you're not alone. At least for a little while until you start wondering if you've made the right choice. 1Suddenly,the quiet evening you planned for yourself begins to lose its initial appeal, and you find your excitement quickly turns to anxiety.

2A recent study defined FOMO as"the uneasy feeling that you're missing  out-your peers are doing or in possession of more or something better than you."

Fear of missing out often develops as a result of deeper unhappiness.Research has found that those with low levels of general life satisfaction are more likely to experience FOMO. 3Active users of social media have a higher probability of comparing their achievements with others'.Rather than finding happiness through their own experiences, they begin worrying that theirs aren't objectively better than anyone else' s.

The consequences of FOMO are significant and far-reaching.One study conducted with first-year university students found that fear of missing out was associated with tiredness, stress, and sleep problems.

4 Begin with gratitude.By reflecting on what you already have, you're less likely to put valuable mental energy in worrying about what you don't.

Embrace JOMO,or the joy of missing out.5 So,turn off your phones and tablets, and engage in something you enjoy while resisting the urge to upload and share it.While this may take practice and perseverance(坚持不懈),the results are well worth the effort.

A.Therefore, you see yourself in new ways.

B.So how can you overcome the fear?

C.Who is easily affected by FOMO?

    D.Fear of missing out,or FOMO,is a common feeling.

E.JOMO allows you to focus on what you really want at any given moment.

F.A doubt begins sinking in as you imagine the fun your friends are having in your absence

G.Further worsening the all-too-common feeling is the rise of social media use.

  • 27、   Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated (躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.

In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’ Workshop, however, she felt lonely — a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “creative voice”.

“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”

Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book talks about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school to graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a children’s book and a short-story collection.

  • 28、Before I turned 10, I lost my parents. My siblings left Hyderabad after relatives adopted them, but I insisted on staying back to continue my education. I lived alone in a room that a family member allowed me to use rent-free. To support myself, I began to deliver newspapers.

I would be up every morning by 5 a.m. and walk five kilometers to the newspaper office. By 6 a.m., I would collect 50 copies of Manzil (Urdu Daily)—the bundle must have weighed over 5 kilograms. My beat spanned 3 kilometers. After distributing the copies, I would rush home—another 3 kilometers —quickly cat and be off to high school.

One wintry morning in 1945,I got home after my deliveries to find a boy of my age at my doorstep. He introduced himself as Afzal and said his father wanted to see me.

I was greeted at the door by Afzal's mother, Naseem. She served tea and snacks as Afzal's father, Mr Kader, joined us. She gently asked me about my daily routine. I told her about my morning job.

Later, as I was about to leave after thanking them, Mr Kader asked me to wait. Later, Mr Kader emerged again, wheeling a new bicycle. "This is for you!" he said.

It took a few seconds for the love to sink in. It felt warm, like home. I didn't realize tears were rolling down my face.

Mr Kader said. Your newspaper editor is a friend of mine. He gave me your address. so I knew you lived close by. Then Afzal told us more about you."

I bowed, gratefully, shook hands with Afzal and left. This time I did not have to walk—I had the bicycle.

  • 29、   Once an old man used to go out to jog every morning. One day he was running around a track that circled the high school football field while the football team was conducting their practice. When the players began running their races up and down the field, the man said to himself determinedly, “I'll just keep running if they don't stop.” So they ran and he ran. They kept on running and he kept on running.

Finally, totally exhausted, the old man had to stop. When he stopped, an equally exhausted football player walked over to him and said, “Sir, I'm glad you finally stopped. Our coach has told us that we have to keep running as long as you are jogging!

It seems to me that we can sometimes find ourselves in a similar kind of situation when it comes to conflicts—that is when we have different opinions about something with someone and get into an argument with him or her, our voices get raised. Neither side wants to be the first to give in, to stop speaking in anger. Everyone has the attitude, “I'll just keep on till he gives in.” So the other party stays mad. So we stay mad. And on we go, finally finding ourselves emotionally and even physically exhausted by the continuing animosity(敌意).

Let me challenge you to do something very difficult. The next time you get into an argument, be the first to give in. Be the first to stop the shouting and the name-calling. Be the first to say, “I'm sorry.” It's the quickest way to stop that. As a saying goes, “A soft answer turns away extreme anger, but a harsh(严厉的)word stirs up anger.”

1What happened to the old man that day?

A.He guided the students to practice running.

B.He joined the football team to play a game.

C.He asked the players to take care of the football field.

D.He decided to compete with the football players.

2Why did the football player come to the old man?

A.To show respect for his great courage.

B.To praise him for his good performance.

C.To express satisfaction with his stopping running.

D.To complain to him about his keeping running.

3What does the underlined word “conflicts” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Misunderstandings. B.Disagreements.

    C.Misfortunes. D.Disappointments.

4What's the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To provide the effective way to make an apology.

B.To show it is hard for us to take up the challenge.

C.To warn us to control our bad emotion properly.

D.To advise us to take active action when we disagree with others.

  • 30、   Here’s an awkward confession (承认): I’ve cried at every job I’ve had. I always find it difficult to___ my emotions. And each time I’ve___ exactly why these emotional moments are considered so taboo (忌讳的). Is it a universal truth that you just can’t cry at work ?

As someone puts it on the internet, as professional women, we’re dealing with the great expectation to “be __ in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire” while also making enough money to pay rent. __ , my eyes get a little watery just thinking about it. So if crying at work is unavoidable – yet taboo – what is an ambitious young woman to do to __ after one of these embarrassing  incidents?

My usual routine after an in-office __ is to remove my contact lenses, have a massive iced-coffee, and ___it never happened (until it happens again). Clearly, I’m no expert on the right professional response. So I spoke with my personal finance coach, Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, to see if she had any __ for reducing the humiliation (丢脸).

“It’s so __ , but telling yourself not to cry usually __ making you cry more,” she says. “You’re using all your energy to hold it together, but there’s so much pressure that the tears will almost unavoidably come. If you do get upset, it can be helpful to __ yourself from the situation. Take a minute to get it together, and come back ready to have a more composed (镇静的) exchange.”

Maybe there’s some __ in crying. I’ve definitely found that __ the taboo can lead to greater relationships with __. I’ve noticed how tears have helped solve a disconnection or problem that might __ have gone unsolved. To be honest, I’m hoping to recognize, if not celebrate, the rare office cry as a hidden skill for greater future.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 1, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.

"This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 5 we will all have a better understanding as a result.
