  • 27、   The Renaissance marks a period of human awakening. In this article we are going to explore the inventions during this period which have helped change the life and progress of mankind.

    Clock

The first mechanical clock was invented in the early 1300’s. Galileo, an Italian scientist, discovered the pendulum (钟摆) around 1602. The pendulum greatly improved the movement of the hands of a clock. The average error with the pendulum varied only by seconds each day. Before this the error was from 10 to 15 minutes a day.

    Eyeglasses

In the late thirteenth century, paintings first appeared with people wearing or holding eyeglasses. From these paintings, we know that eyeglasses were invented in Italy. Around 1300 the Venetian Glassmaker’s Guild made it illegal for cheap glasses to be made. By 1352, eyeglasses were only worn by well-educated rich men. In 1456, the invention of the printing press allowed books to become widespread. Once people owned books, reading glasses began to be seen in the hands of common people. In 1623, the Spanish invented the first graded eyeglasses.

    Flush toilet (抽水马桶)

Sir John Harrington, godson to Queen Elizabeth, made the first flush toilet for himself and his godmother in 1596. He was teased by his friends and never made another one.

In 1775, Alexander Cummings reinvented the flush toilet more commonly called the water closet. Two years later in 1777, Samuel Prosser applied for and received a patent for it.

    Wallpaper

In 1496, the first paper factory came into operation in England. English artists soon make wallpaper for decoration. For the next 200 years England was a large producer of wallpaper for Europe. Before wallpaper was invented, only wealthy people could afford to decorate the walls of their houses.

  • 28、   China’s self-developed floating airship Jimu No.1 has set a new world record, reaching an altitude of 7,003 meters on May 23rd in Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

Jimu No.1 is a lighter-than-air ship with a volume(体积)of 2,300 cubic meters. Its surface is made of composite fabric(复合织物), which can withstand low temperatures of -70℃. Equipped with scientific instruments, it conducts upper air observations and collects weather data.

Floating airships play a significant role in high-altitude observations and tracking climate and geological changes. Compared with observation stations on the ground, they can make stereoscopic(有立体效果的)observations that provide more accurate data as the airships can directly travel to test areas and are less affected by buildings and local terrain(地形).

Jimu No.1 is being used in a monitoring project, part of China’s second Qinghai-Tibet research mission, which aims to help researchers understand the source of the water supply and water transmission routes on the plateau. Named “the Third Pole” and “the Water Tower of Asia,” the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau provides water to many Asian rivers, making it an ideal place for carrying out high-altitude projects and conducting research in water, ecology and human activities.

Jimu No.1 has been breaking records. It set the previous records of over 6,200 meters in January, and 6,300 meters in April. And floating airships are expected to reach an altitude of 10,000 meters in the future.

【1】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.The exact weight of Jimu No.1.

B.The highest speed of Jimu No.1.

    C.The characteristic of composite fabric.

D.The working rules of the instruments.

【2】Floating airships beat ground observation stations in that ________.

A.air currents can be better observed by airships

B.airships won’t be affected by buildings and local terrain

C.ground stations only track climate and geological changes

D.data from airships’ stereoscopic observations are more accurate

【3】What field may research in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau cover?

①water   ②poles   ③water towers   ④ecology   ⑤human activities

    A.①②③

    B.①④⑤

    C.③④⑤

    D.②③④

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.China is carrying out a mission in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

B.China’s self-developed floating airship reaches record height

C.The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is ideal for high-altitude research

D.Floating airships have a long way to go in upper air observations

  • 29、   Put “crottin de chevre” into Google Translate, and you’ll be told it means “goat dung () So if it appeared on a menu, you might feel sick of it. Actually, you have missed a delicious cheese made of goat’s milk that is often served as a starter in France.

Such misunderstandings are why Google admits that its free tool, used by about 500 million people, is not intended to replace human translators. Tourists might accept a few misunderstandings because the technology is cheap and convenient. But perhaps in business, law or medicine, these services often fall short. “Using Google Translate can lead to some serious errors, especially when words have multiple meanings, which is often the case in fields such as law or engineering, says Samantha Langley, a translator in France.

That is not to say professional translators do not use Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Some applications can help them take the dull work out of repetitive translations. CATs are even used as part of modern language degree courses these days. So how good are they?

One of the most popular new tools is the so-called translation earphone. Usually paired with a smartphone app, they pick up spoken foreign languages and translate them for the user. “It has taken decades of research to combine that with speech recognition technology, which has allowed us to make a huge leap forward in terms of accuracy,” says Andrew Ochoa, chief executive of Waverly Labs, which produces translation earphones. “For meetings and conferences, wearable translators like Waverly’s are undoubtedly popular. But even this new generation tech has limitations. Users must wait at least a few seconds for a phrase to be translated, or more if the internet connection is poor.”

And computers still lack the subtlety (微妙) of human communication. “I find it’s actually harder to desert part of the sentence and rebuild it than to just create something from scratch.” says Antonio, a translator. But he thinks this problem could be resolved within the next 10 years.

1What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?

    A.Add some more related information.

B.Provide some advice for the readers.

C.Introduce the topic of the text.

    D.Summarize the following paragraphs.

2How do professional translators do to improve their working efficiency?

A.By changing Google Translate. B.By surfing online.

C.By working with engineers. D.By using CAT tools.

3What advantage does the translation earphone have compared with many CATs?

A.It is more accurate. B.It is more attractive.

C.It is cheaper. D.It is smaller.

4What may be the best title for the text?

    A.Are Computer Translators Good?

B.Why do Human Translators Need Help?

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

There were two men who occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain (排除)the liquids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours every day. They spoke about their wives and families and their jobs. And every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened by all the activity and color of the outside world.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room closed his eyes and imagined the beautiful scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window described it. Unexpectedly, a strange thought entered his head: Why could he look out of the window? Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem fair.

As the thought developed, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy turned into hate and soon turned him sour. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window and that thought now controlled his life.
