  • 26、Shakespeare is more popular globally than with people in Britain, though the poet has made an important contribution to Britain's economy and culture, a new research showed Tuesday.

According to a new survey "All the World's", commissioned(委托)by the British Council and conducted by YouGov, the great playwright(剧作家)has been proved more popular outside Britain(65%)than in his own country (59%).

A total of 18,000 respondents(调查对象)in 15 countries participated in the survey in November 2015. Survey showed only 59% British people like Shakespeare, while 68% Chinese respondents like him.

The top five countries "like Shakespeare" are India(89%), Mexico(88%), Brazil(87%), Turkey(79%)and South Africa(73%). Scores of France and Germany were the lowest, with 51% and 44%, respectively.

The survey also showed that 84% of Brazilians said they found him related to today's world, compared with 57% in Britain. Meanwhile, 83% of Indian respondents said they understood Shakespeare, however, in Britain, only 58% of respondents said so.

Contributable(起作用的)factors for the results included Shakespeare's works being translated into more contemporary editions and adaptation into other formats(版式), said British Council.

This new research also underlined the continued importance and relevance of Shakespeare in the 21st century. Over a third of those questioned said Shakespeare made them feel more positive about Britain in general.

Previous research conducted by the British Council in 2014 showed that Shakespeare was the leading personality that 18 to 34 year olds in Brazil, China, Germany, India and the U.S. most appreciated contemporary British arts and culture.

B.Contemporary British arts and culture was enjoyed by 18 to 34 year olds.

C.Shakespeare's works have been translated into every language in the world.

D.Over 30% of respondents made a good impression on Britain because of Shakespeare.

  • 27、“I think therefore I am”— mind over matter. What you expect from yourself and the world makes a big impact on the results of your efforts.

From a neuroscience perspective, the brain will believe anything you tell it, right and wrong. Research has shown that this phenomenon can have huge benefits when we approach a significant or difficult task. “We do know there’s the mind-body connection, which isn’t kind of mysterious or magical, and that this is in itself changing our physiology,” said David Robson, a science writer. “Think that you could catch up in a race or that your public speaking anxiety could help you perform better.”

Expectations, even negative ones, are meant to help our brains navigate (理解) a complicated world by simplifying our predictions of the wide range of outcomes to any situation. Those negative expectations can help us anticipate and avoid danger, but they aren’t always up to date with the context that surrounds us. And when you’re in the face of a challenge, inaccurate information can create obstacles of its own. Pessimistic thoughts really just put you in a position where you’re more vulnerable to actually experiencing that unpleasant or negative outcome.

Setting more positive expectations and hopefully acquiring the rewards starts with how you talk to yourself. When baseball players step up to the plate, they tell themselves they will knock it out of the park. Being aware of your thoughts and how you talk to yourself about a challenge can make a big impact.

We tend to see ourselves and our obstacles in two ways. Either our abilities are fixed or can grow, and our obstacles are a threat or a challenge. Shifting focus to believe that we can see difficulties as a challenge to be met rather than a threat to be avoided has been shown to result in more success. If you interpret that situation as a challenge, your physiological response will empower and equip you to be more creative and effective.

Having realistically optimistic expectations does better equip each of us to take up a challenge with our best resources, experts said.

【1】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.The outcome of pessimistic thoughts.

B.The connection between the mind and body.

    C.The advantages of positive expectations.

D.The pros and cons of negative expectations.

【2】What will make baseball players more positive when games begin?

    A.Thinking out loud.

    B.Stepping up to the plate.

    C.Challenging themselves.

    D.Improving their abilities.

【3】According to the text, what can promote greater success?

    A.Avoiding threats and troubles.

B.Removing our obstacles in the way.

C.Shifting our focus to something else.

    D.Regarding difficulties as challenges.

【4】Where is the text most likely from?

    A.A history book.

    B.A fantasy novel.

    C.A science & wellness paper.

    D.A sports & health report.

  • 28、   “I have slept on the Embankment (河堤),” wrote George Orwell in 1933, adding that, despite the noise and the wet and the cold, it was “much better than not sleeping at all.” Under the nearby Charing Cross bridge, Orwell reported that “50 men were waiting, mirrored in the shivering puddles.” Nine decades on and Charing Cross and the Embankment are once again full of rough sleepers, even during the coldest days of December. Across London their numbers have more than tripled since 2010.

It is a pattern found in much of the rich world. Almost every European country is seeing a rise in the number of homeless people. Homelessness across America is in decline, but it is soaring in its most prosperous cities. And roughly 5,000 people live on the streets of San Francisco, a 19% rise in just two years.

However, some rich, successful cities, including Tokyo and Munich, have few people living on the streets. These places offer lessons on how to reduce homelessness. One is that tough love can sometimes work. Conservatives argue that softer policing methods in the 1970s, including not being strict to public drunkenness, were in part responsible for the rise in homelessness. The world could learn something from Greece, where strong family networks ensure that those down on their luck find someone to take them in. Many experts argue that it is counterproductive to give money to someone begging on the street.

Yet stricter methods will ultimately do little if housing costs remain high, which is the underlying reason for rising homelessness. Few Americans lived on the streets in the early post-war period because housing was cheaper. Back then only one in four tenants spent more than 30% of their income on rent, compared with one in two today. The best evidence suggests that a 10% rise in housing costs in a pricy city causes an 8% jump in homelessness.

The state can do something to help. Cuts to rent subsidies for Britain’s poor are probably the biggest reason why Charing Cross has so many people sleeping on the streets once again. Making such subsidies more generous might actually save governments money in the medium term — after all, demands on health-care services and the police would decline. People would also be more likely to land a job.

Another option is for the state to build more housing itself. In Singapore, 80% of residents live in government-built flats which they buy at knock-down prices. While many countries have been privatizing their stock of public housing, Finland has been building more of it, giving the government the necessities to put homeless people in their own apartments rather than warehousing them in shelters. In Finland the homeless numbers are moving in the right direction.

The most effective reform, however, would be to make building more homes easier. In many countries NIMBYist (邻避主义者) planning rules vastly inflate the market price of shelter. Such rules should be abolished. Japan loosened planning rules, prompting residential construction to jump. Since then, the number of rough sleepers has fallen by 80% in 20 years in Tokyo. Until cities elsewhere let the buildings go up, more people will find themselves down and out.

1The writer quotes the words of George Orwell in Paragraph 1 to __________.

A.describe the poor situation of the homeless in 1933.

B.emphasize the large number of the rough sleepers.

C.unveil the difficulty of solving the problem of the homeless.

D.introduce the current problem of homelessness in the rich world.

2Which of the following is the main reason for rising number of the homeless?

A.prosperity of the rich world. B.generosity towards the homeless.

C.outrageous housing cost. D.privatization of the public housing.

3Which of the following is Not True, according to this passage?

A.In Finland and Singapore, the number of the homeless was reduced by building more public housing and apartments.

B.Greece prioritized offering tough love over giving money directly to the beggars to comfort them.

C.NIMBYist supported the government to abolish the inappropriate housing rules and make building more houses easier.

D.British government’s cutting the rent subsidies for the poor contributes to the increasing number of the rough sleepers.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Reasons for the rising homeless in the rich world.

B.Ways to cut homelessness in the world’s priciest cities.

C.Different reaction of different countries towards the homeless.

D.Comparison of the housing cost in impoverished and rich countries.

  • 29、Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales. Recent research estimates that the population of Pacific gray whales off North America's West Coast has dwindled by almost a quarter since 2016. Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska. The National Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an “Unusual Mortality Event”. UMEs are declared when a “significant die-off” occurs and when information is collected to clarify why it occurs.

The Arctic has historically low levels of sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains gray whales. Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year. Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition, which suggested they were not finding enough food during the summer.

This die-off is alarmingly similar to the events of 20 years ago, when another UME resulted in a significant drop in the gray whale population. Although the cause was ultimately undetermined, it's thought that the population reached “carrying capacity”— it grew too large for the environment to support it. Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.

Gray whales, hunted almost to extinction by the mid-20th century, were one of the first to be protected from hunting. The Eastern North Pacific population rebounded without pressure from whaling and was taken off the Endangered Species List; the Western North Pacific population is still listed as endangered. This die-off is a reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's secure future. New threats arise, climate change upends habitats, and continued monitoring is needed in case a crash comes.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
