  • 26、The Kyiv City Ballet danced to a full theater in Paris for the company’s last show of its French tour. The tour has left the dancers without a place to go after the war started in Ukraine. In other times, performing at the Théatre du Chatelet would be a dream come true for the dancers. But with the ongoing war in their country, the dancers feel only a deep sadness.

“We are both physically and emotionally exhausted.” Ekaterina Kozlova said. She is the company’s assistant director. “Everyone in the ballet is worried about their families, loved ones, friends, colleagues at home. It’s been very difficult.”

The Théatre du Chatelet, in the center of Paris, offered them the stage on Tuesday for the group’s final show of a French tour. The dance director of the Paris Opera and some members of her company joined the Ukrainians for a class before performing several ballet classics together. They danced parts of Russian composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcrackery.

For many of the dancers, the chance to train and dance was a way to think about “something other than the conflict in Ukraine,” Kozlova said. One of the dancers will be going to the Ukrainian border in the coming days to pick up her young daughter who was taken out of the country. Only some members of the company were traveling around France. Many of the ballet’s best dancers stayed behind, waiting to join their friends after they reached Paris.

“Most of our artists are detained in Paris.” Director Ivan Kozlova told the Paris crowd. The city of Paris and the ballet community have helped find temporary housing for the Ukrainian dancers who say they hope to continue dancing in France and elsewhere. The Chatelet theater offered the whole group a residency. But for now, Tuesday’s last-minute performance was their last. All sales from their performances will go to nongovernmental organizations collecting and sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine and neighboring countries.

  • 27、Americans are pound of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical good points. For example, they are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.

Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

【1】What surprises us is that Americans ________.

A.still judge a man by his clothes

B.respect a life operator in uniform

    C.prefer wearing civilian clothes

    D.think highly of uniforms

【2】People are likely to think that a man in uniform ________.

    A.shows his social position

B.suggests the quality of his work

    C.appears to be more practical

    D.looks fresher and more attractive

【3】Those who are against uniforms believe that people wearing uniforms ________.

    A.lose personal characters

    B.have little freedom

    C.are usually helpless

    D.enjoy less popularity

【4】It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

    A.people enjoy wearing comfortable uniforms

B.the cost of the uniform is acceptable

C.people generally trust a person in uniform

D.people wear uniforms to show their skills

【5】The underlined sentence tells us that ________.

A.it's impossible for people with jobs to lose their identity

B.nurses and policemen must wear uniforms when working

C.people in some professions act in an easier way without uniforms

D.people's identity can be recognized more easily by their uniforms

  • 28、   Recently, Whitewater Middle School students in the US looked at 200 pounds (90.7kg) of food. Their classmates threw it away after a meal in the cafeteria.

They found the remains of pizzas. They saw untouched green salads and pieces of bread bitten only once.

It was, they said, both disgusting and educational.

“You don’t realize how much food waste you’re making till you see it,” said student Cody Gist.

To deal with this problem, Whitewater added environmental science as a school-wide program this year. Teachers are guiding their students through research on the ways food is linked to environment, poverty, and people’s health.

The school changed to compostable (可用作堆肥的) paper trays (托盘) as well. Working with Every Tray Counts, a US nonprofit group, the school hopes for a change from disposable (一次性的) trays to compostable paper trays.

This isn’t just an exercise at school. Whitewater is joining a network of schools, business and neighborhoods. They try to make composting as mainstream as recycling.

“The larger issue is protection of landfill space,” said Laurette Hall, an environmental management official. The area has enough space to last for maybe 25 more years, she said “That isn’t as much as it sounds in such a rapidly growing area.”

Principal Beth Thompson said students advise each other on new ways to deal with trash.

“Students understand why it matters so not one student refused to do extra work when throwing away their waste,” Thompson said.

Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature class, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.

Mollie Lyman works with several language arts classrooms. Their classes discuss such issues as how poor neighborhoods often have less access to healthy food.

Lyman says she wants students to ask some basic questions: “What do we eat? What do we waste?”

1Why did Whitewater Middle School students look at the food?

A.To see how food was connected with other problems.

B.To find out the calories of different kinds of food.

C.To check what foods were most popular among students.

D.To prepare students for the environmental science course.

2What measures did Whitewater Middle School take?

① Introducing a new course about the environment.

② Using compostable paper trays in the cafeteria.

③ Setting up a group called Every Tray Counts.

④ Joining others to make composting common.

    A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④

3What did Laurette Hall worry about?

A.People don’t want to protect landfill space.

B.There won’t be enough landfill space in the future.

C.Students don’t know how to recycle trash.

D.Students don’t understand the waste problem.

4What is the purpose of the article?

A.To tell readers how important it is to save food.

B.To call on students to care about poor people.

C.To encourage schools to have environmental protection classes.

D.To share how a US school is making an effort for the environment.

  • 29、   My dad was one who never knew a stranger. He was a farmer in the Midwest and he spent his winters selling insurance and commodities (商品). Daddy could really talk up anyone and his favorite thing to do was find out their income. Once we were at Chicago O’Hare Airport. Daddy was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy sat down next to my daddy. The gentleman could not speak a word of English but that did not stop my dad. He found out his business, asking how many children he had and of course how much he made.

I used to be somewhat embarrassed by this. In the last year of my daddy’s life, I was home visiting with my husband and I was in the car with my mom. She told me a story about how she was in the doctors’ office with my daddy and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. My mom was very private, so I imagine she was bothered by this as well. She said he started talking to a young man in a wheelchair who could not talk and could not move his arms or head. But my daddy kept asking the young man questions, getting him to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctors’ office.

When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad’s hand and said. “Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.” My father ended up dying later that month, a big surprise—a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all nine of his children had been home that summer to visit. I told this story about his love of talking at the funeral.

【1】Why did the author think her dad talked to the Russian guy?

    A.To practice his Russian.

    B.To teach him some English.

    C.To drive away his loneliness

    D.To seek business opportunities.

【2】What does the underlined word “private” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Not connected with work or official position.

B.Not for people in general or for others to know about.

C.Working for oneself rather than for the state or for a group.

D.Not wanting to share thoughts and feelings with other people.

【3】What did the author think of her dad’s love of talking in the end?

    A.It was a shame.

    B.It was a disadvantage.

    C.It was a virtue.

    D.It was a funny thing.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.My dad worked by talking

B.My dad never met a stranger

C.My dad could be more talkative

D.My dad was always kind to others

  • 33、   Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people are _________ in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed _________ in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to _________ me.

Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them _________ various experiments.

I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether their differences in _________ was due to differences in their ability to _________ opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to _________ it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had _________ placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying … “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $50.”

This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to _________ it and the lucky people tended to spot it.

Unlucky people are generally more ____________ than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the ____________. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings focused on finding their perfect partner and miss opportunities to make good friends. They read newspapers ____________ to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.

Lucky people are more ____________ and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people create good fortune via four ____________ . They are skilled at creating and ____________ opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), create self-fulfilling prophesies (预言) via positive expectations, and adopt a “never say die,” attitude that transforms bad luck into good.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

  • 37、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

  • 40、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless , I’d always wanted five or six kids. Three surgeries later, that dream would never come true.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子)seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).”Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’   visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
