二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   If the lady in the Mona Lisa painting could talk, she could tell us why she was smiling for the pose, isn’t it? But, of course, that is not possible because she is just a painting.

However, recently, Samsung Labs in Moscow demonstrated an Al program that could create a video of a person talking just from one single profile picture. The result? A talking Mona Lisa, thanks to a technology, known as deepfake!

The word “deepfake” is a combination of the words “deep learning” and “fake”. Deep learning refers to the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to create images of human faces. The word was used first in 2017 when an anonymous person using the name “deepfake” began to post images of celebrities’ faces on other people’s bodies.

To start with, video recordings of a person are broken down into the smallest levels of detail that capture how their mouth and facial features move when they pronounce a sound like “oo” or “ah”. These, along with the 3-D model of the lower face, are then put together and the person can be made to say words he (or she) never did.

Deepfakes use a technology called generative adversarial networks (GAN). This system uses two separate artificial intelligence systems that are trained such that one generates the images and the other attempts to tell if they are fake. The machines continue to teach each other over and over again until one produces a video that the other cannot tell it is fake!

Fake news would easily go out of hand if people believed the fake videos as real and it could have political and social effect. There is a lesson here for each of us to be careful about what we post on the Internet. In the future, you might see a picture or video of yourself and may not be able to tell that it is fake! It all just goes to show that seeing is not always believing.

1How does the writer develop the third paragraph?

A.By defining a concept. B.By introducing an app.

C.By testing a scientific method. D.By providing different examples.

2What can we infer about GAN from the passage?

A.It needs to be trained. B.It can learn all by itself.

C.It produces perfect pictures. D.It is used to identify fake images.

3What is implied in the last paragraph?

A.People can use deepfakes to become famous.

B.The public aren’t easily cheated by deepfakes.

C.All of us may become a victim of deepfakes.

D.Deepfakes make what you have done known to all.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Mona Lisaa Talking Picture

    B.Fake VideosRecording of a Person

    C.AI ProgramCreating a Video

    D.DeepfakesBelieving or Not

  • 27、   With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pyjamas (睡衣). Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.

All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting (警报) systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep.

This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds”—the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

1What does the author stress in Paragraph 1?

A.Many students are absent from class.

B.Students are very tired on Monday mornings.

C.Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.

D.Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.

2Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?

A.Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.

B.Students don’t sleep well because of alerting systems.

C.One’s body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.

D.Adolescents’ delayed sleep/wake cycle isn’t the preferred pattern.

3What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Functions of the body clock. B.The “night owl” phenomenon.

C.Human beings’ sleep behaviour. D.The school schedule of “early birds”.

  • 28、   First aid means what it says the aid, or help that can be given to an injured person first which is before any other help. Usually the first thing we should do if a serious accident happens is to telephone for an ambulance, but sometimes quick actions by us may save someone's life.

Shock: people often suffer from shock after receiving an injury. The face turns grey and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.

Broken Bones: Don't move the person. Send for an ambulance at once.

Poison: A person who has swallowed poison should be taken to hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers down his throat. But if he has swallowed some kind of acid, or anything that burns, it would be a bad thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers down his throat. The poison would burn his throat as it came up. It is, therefore, best to find out what the person has taken so that you can call to tell the doctor.

Suffocation: This means not being able to breathe. For example, a drowning person will have his lungs full of water. Lay him down with his head lower than the rest of his body so that the water will drain out. If a person has something stuck in his throat, try to remove it with your fingers, or by hitting him on the back. When a person has stopped breathing because of drowning, electric shock, breathing in a poisonous gas etc. you can help him to begin breathing again.

Remember: When an accident happens, send someone to telephone for an ambulance at once. Keep the injured person warm and quiet. Give him plenty of air. Do not let other people crowd around him. If you see an injured person who is being looked after, keep away.

1The underlined words "drain out" in Paragraph 5 probably mean __________.

    A.leave out B.squeeze out

    C.flow away D.let out

2When someone is injured, what should we do first?

A.Keep him warm with a blanket.

B.Send for an ambulance at once.

C.Make him sick by pushing your fingers down his throat.

D.Lay him down with his head lower.

3The passage is mainly about __________.

A.the importance of first aid B.the symptoms of shocks

C.the types of injuries D.how to offer first aid

4Where would this article probably appear?

    A.In a safety booklet . B.In an advertisement.

    C.In a newspaper. D.In a popular magazine.

  • 29、   Color is considered one of the most useful and powerful design tools you have. People respond to different colors in different ways. Colors tell someone if you are friendly. In the same way they affect whether someone will continue clicking through your website. Colors determine if someone will start reading your article in a magazine or post on your website.

Colors also help to keep people involved on your website and determine how long they stay. Of course that’s not just about the content. Colors also influence how people will respond and behave.

The next time you go into a fast-food restaurant, look closely at the colors. Do they decorate with vivid reds and oranges because they encourage diners to eat and leave quickly like many of the fast-food establishments(企业)That is exactly the response they want.

Different cultures have different attitudes and preferences; thus, they will have another color reaction. In China, “white” stands for death and in Brazil, it is the color purple while in America it is black. People from warm countries respond favorably to warm colors; people from colder climates prefer cooler colors. In America, green is associated with jealousy or money. Blue (the most popular) is associated with trust, responsibility, belonging and coolness.

This also means that color affects shopping habits. Different colors attract different kinds of customers. Red, orange, black and royal blue attract impulse(冲动的)buyers. Pink, light blue and navy attract smart budget shoppers. There is really a lot into it. To experience this, why not click on the following large companies’ websites that have spent the funds on this type of research now?

1This passage mainly tells us ______

A.what colors mean to people in different countries.

B.colors affect people in many different countries.

C.which kind of color does good to people’s health.

D.a good website should have as many kinds of colors as possible.

2According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Reds and oranges in a restaurant will make you stay there longer.

B.In Brazil, the color purple is associated with death.

C.People from warm countries will like cooler colors better.

D.People’s shopping habits will not be affected by colors

3What would the author probably talk about in the next paragraph?

A.To offer some large companies’ websites.

B.To introduce what colors mean in different countries.

C.To tell us how to use colors in our daily life.

D.To give more examples about successful restaurants.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”

The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary school teaching, and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.

The main drawback (缺点) of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary.

Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs. Joanne Manners, 24, is a good example: “I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher-training course to become a maths teacher---but I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, so I decided not to become a teacher.”

It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam, an accountant from London: “I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”

The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also indicates that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my music, so when the annual winter recital (独奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs. My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You and your sister should perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living (养老院),” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there would really appreciate the music and you could each play more than just two songs.”

I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents at the home with some lively tunes.

My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for my sister and me to perform. We were told we could play the piano during the Sunday diner hour in two weeks. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics. My sister and I decided that first I would play three songs and then she would, taking turns until the end of the hour.

When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. We were greeted by an old woman who introduced herself as Phyllis. Then we came to the dining room and Phyllis announced to the room, “These two girls have come to sing and want to introduce themselves!” As she handed the microphone to me there was scattered applause.

“Hi, my name is Baylie,” I said with a smile.

“Hi, I’m Chloe,” my sister said shyly.

“We have come here to entertain you with some piano songs. We hope you enjoy our performance,” I enthusiastically announced.
