  • 27、It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

    A.road politeness

    B.traffic jams

    C.good manners

    D.modern drivers

【2】Troubles on the road are often caused by _________.

    A.traffic jams

    B.the behavior of the drivers

    C.great speed

    D.terrible road conditions

【3】According to the writer, a good driver should _________.

A.beat back when forced to face rude driving

B.be able to recognize politeness when he sees it

C.encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to

D.join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel

【4】The following statements are right EXCEPT that _________.

A.some modern drivers are not good at driving

B.road politeness is good sense as well as good manners

C.it is also right to have a tiger in the driver’s seat

D.a friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness

【5】It is not always right for drivers to _________.

    A.master roadmanship

B.recognize politeness when they see it

C.wave a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path

D.give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness

  • 28、   In my high school English class in a small Mississippi town, Miss Denman tried to insert our sleepy heads that every novel had to do one of the three things: tell something; show something; prove something. She then read us one she considered a piece of perfect writing because it achieved all the three things: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, whose remaining stories and essays have now been published.

As Miss Denman began reading — “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming(开花)freely and the grass was richly green” — we were calmed into “the square between the post office and the bank” of a small American town, where all 300 citizens are met. They’ve come to draw lots(抽签)for the lottery of each year that ends before noon. The person holding the paper with a black mark is then led to a clearing and stoned to death by all the town’s citizens.

When The Lottery first appeared in The New Yorker in 1948, the magazine was flooded with letters from angry readers demanding to know what it was about. Unlike those confused The New Yorker readers, Miss Denman’s students weren’t confused by a story in which foolish violence was passed down through the generations. Ours was a Gothic world and Shirley Jackson seemed to our ears like Flannery O’Connor without the Georgia accent.

Forty years passed before I read anything else by Shirley Jackson. Then I happened upon her final novel — We Have Always Lived in the Castle, published in 1962, three years before her death in 1965 — a true excellent work  whose young main female character, Merricat Blackwood, is as precocious(早熟的)and worth remembering as any young people in the 20th-century American novels. She describes: “I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise. I like my sister Constance, and my uncle Julian, and the poisonous mushroom. Everyone else in my family is dead.” Six years ago Blackwood’s parents, an aunt, and a younger brother were murdered — poisoned with arsenic(砒霜).

Fifty years after her untimely death, Let Me Tell You, a new reminder of how excellent a writer Shirley Jackson came out. The stories, essays, and lectures in this brilliant new collection include some published before and some able to the public for the first time. The title comes from the book’s only unfinished story, about two 14-year-old friends, the spoiled daughters of rich fathers. Their snobbery(势利)performances counteract beliefs of classlessness in American: “My father is a lawyer. It’s important what your father is. Also it’s important to have a swimming pool, only not the biggest swimming pool of all and of course no one would dream of going near it.” The reader is eager to know what happens but even Jackson’s finished stories are rarely tied up with appropriate endings. She counted on the reader to make an effort.

Let Me Tell You feels like a direct communication from beyond the tomb with the writer. This is especially true of her essays on the skill of writing. With the publication of Let Me Tell You, Shirley Jackson can now enjoy a peace with a new world of readers. The woman of Gothic psychological novel can truly rest in peace.

1Miss Denman chose to read her students The Lottery mainly because ______.

A.it’s one of her favorite novels

B.it’s a good example to explain the features of novels

C.it has skillfully-arranged plots and beautiful statements

D.it’s a masterpiece of an American literary writer, Shirley Jackson

2What can we learn about The Lottery?

A.It has a beautiful beginning but a sad ending.

B.Whoever got the lottery in the story was a lucky dog.

C.Living in the Gothic world, its writer was good Gothic novels.

D.It confused The New Yorker readers as well as Denman’s students.

    3According to Shirley Jackson’s final novel, ______.

A.Merricat was a quiet girl full of love for everything

B.only Merricat and her two sisters survived the murder

C.Merricat became as mature as her peers after the murder

D.altogether four people in the family died from being poisoned

4What does the underlined word “counteract” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?

    A.Act against. B.Make stronger.

  • 29、Ever wonder how your brain works when making decisions bigger than medium versus spicy salsa, like buying a car or accepting a job offer? Researchers from the University of Dundee in Scotland conducted a study that clarifies why you may want to have a small bite before making that big decision.

Benjamin Vincent from the University of Dundee’s Psychology department and his co-author Jordan Skyrnka tested 50 people two times: once when they followed their normal eating patterns and once when they did not eat anything during the day. Using three different types of rewards (food, money, and song downloads), the team discovered when presented with the choice of receiving the reward now versus double the award at some point in the future, participants would usually volunteer to wait for 35 days to earn a larger bounty, but when they were hungry, they said they would only wait three days.

“We wanted to know whether being in a state of hunger had a specific effect on how you make decisions only relating to food or if it had broader effects, and this research suggests decision-making gets more present-focused when people are hungry,” Vincent said in a story about the study on the university’s website. “You would predict that hunger would impact people’s preferences relating to food, but it is not yet clear why people get more present-focused for completely unrelated rewards. Hunger is so common that it is important to understand the non-obvious ways in which our preferences and decisions may be affected by it,” he said.

In an earlier study of the subject by a team at Cambridge University in England, the researchers noted that serotonin plays a major role in the decision-making process. “Since the raw material for making serotonin—an amino acid called tryptophan — only comes from diet, levels of the chemical decline between meals,” reports a piece in the Telegraph about the study. “This can lead to aggressiveness and impulsiveness,” say the team.

【1】How did Benjamin Vincent and Jordan Skyrnka carry out their research?

    A.By analyzing reasons.

    B.By making comparison.

    C.By giving examples.

    D.By filling questionnaires.

【2】The underlined word “bounty” in paragraph 2 can be best replaced by ________.

    A.bonus.

    B.quantity.

    C.income.

    D.fortune.

【3】What conclusion can we draw from Vincent’ study?

A.It’s common to make a wrong decision if you are hungry.

B.Make sure you are not hungry before making a big decision.

C.The more hungry you are, the quicker you will make a decision.

D.Being hungry drives you to make a decision connected with food.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.What should be eaten to make a wise man.

B.How can we get enough serotonin from our diet.

    C.What other factors will influence one’s decision-making.

D.How does a chemical function in the course of making a decision.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.

"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Paragraph 1: The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine.
