Official Historical Tour of Harvard

Student-Led Public Walking Tour

Please note: Due to ongoing construction, our tour schedule will be limited.

The Official Harvard tour departs from the Harvard Information Center in the Smith Campus Center. The tour is student-led and includes an outdoor walk through Harvard Yard, providing a history of the university, general information, and a unique view on the student’s individual experience. The tour is around one hour long, and completely free of charge.

Tour registration is done in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours are capped at 35 visitors. Currently we are only able to admit groups of up to 14 people on our free, public tour. If you have a group of 15 or more, reservations are required.

Reservations are required for tours of 15 or more people, with an absolute maximum of 125 people. We request groups to schedule a tour 2 weeks ahead. Please note: We cannot accommodate groups that arrive without a reservation.

27、   Statistics show that most toddlers (刚学走路的小孩) learn how to say about 20 words by 18 months. Talking is easy. If you ask anyone, none will remember how they started doing it, it just comes naturally.

But what might not flow as smoothly as words, is body language. It's a whole different deal when you're using your hands, eyes or head instead of your tongue. And what makes it even more complicated is the fact that body language differs all around the world.

I find it shockingly amazing how just a small finger gesture could mean one thing in the east and the completely opposite in the west. For instance, in Japan bowing is the most common greeting. It shows respect and Japanese pay a lot of attention to the details like the timing, posture and movement. A bow in Japan represents sincerity, respect and graciousness. While in New Zealand Maori, the pressing of noses and foreheads is the traditional greeting. They call it "hongi”; which is regarded as the breath of life.

For most of us, nodding our head up and down often means agreement, but not for the Bulgarians or Greeks. In both cultures, nodding one's head up and down actually means“no”. The American goodbye wave could actually be interpreted (领会) as a“no”in many parts of Europe and Latin America. And the Italian goodbye wave would be understood in America as a “come here” and the American “come here” gesture would actually be seen as an insult (侮辱) in most of Asia.

So before you travel to explore a different culture, make sure you're aware of alternate meanings for body language. We live in a world with many different cultures, so don't forget how differently one hand gesture can be interpreted!

This course is designed for students who are familiar with painting in watercolours, but are having difficulty with some techniques. We will discuss choice of materials, colour mixing and other areas that may be raised.

29、   Shortly after graduating in 2012, Dutch fashion designer Bas Timmer heard some upsetting news. While he had been busy drawing designs for his new brand, a friend’s father, who was homeless, had died of hypothermia（体温过低）just meters away from his studio. The young man set aside his personal ambitions and instead used his design skills to create Sheltersuit—a jacket that doubles as a sleeping bag to protect the world's homeless against extreme weather.

The designer had originally intended to create a limited number of Sheltersuits and then go back to develop his clothing brand. “I thought, OK, I'm going to make 100,” he says. However, demand for the product, which was an instant hit, has never stopped. Over the past four years, Timmer and his team have distributed 6,000 Sheltersuits to the homeless in Europe.

To help pay for the production cost, Timmer set up the Sheltersuit Foundation, which accepts donations from both groups and individuals. Since March 2019, the team has also been using its factory to create clothing, bag and other things for paying customers.

Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.
