二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Rome is recognized across the globe for its classical artwork, but recently the city's street art has been drawing attention. While many urban artists stick to painting murals(壁画),one Italian sculptor is resisting the trend with his wonderful works made from an unusual material. Andrea Gandini, a native of Rome in his early twenties, has been recognized for his wood carvings of old tree trunks scattered across the city's landscape.

Gandini's Trocomorto, or "dead trunk" project, began in 2018, when the artist ran out of sculpting clay. That's when he noticed the remains of an old tree stump in his neighborhood. He realized that Rome was full of potential canvases(画布)just waiting to be given a new life. "Bringing trees back to life" is exactly how Gandini and others describe his art.

Due to years of poor care by the city, many trees became diseased and had to be cut down. This resulted in lots of old stumps that degraded the streets of Rome, which were costly to remove. However, they have been a perfect canvas of Gandini, who has completed over 50 carvings across the city.

Gandini gives each old tree trunk a face and personality of its own. By recognizing each formerly living tree as individual, he hopes to give them some dignity in death and respect each of them with their own headstone of sorts. For those that can't make the trip to Rome, Gandini documents his works of art on Facebook.

Gandini's “dead trunk" project reminds us of what Auguste Rodin says, "There is no lack of beauty in the world, but a lack of eyes to find it." All is beautiful in the eyes of the artist, for his keen eye sees through the heart of all living things. To discover its character is to pierce its outer form and touch its inner truth. This "truth" is also "beauty".

1What has drawn people's attention recently in Rome according to the passage?

A.Its classical artwork. B.Its traditional murals.

C.Its street wood carvings. D.Its unusual material.

2Which statement is NOT correct about Gandini's works?

A.They are full of life. B.They follow the trend of murals.

C.They beautify the city. D.They are appreciated by some artists.

3What does Gandini try to put in his works?

A.Dignity and respect. B.Beauty and kindness.

C.Hope and personality. D.Death and art.

4What can we learn from this passage?

A.Beauty is always around for keen eyes.

B.Inner truth is difficult to find.

C.We live in a world lacking beauty.

D.Grandini is a person who loves nature and truth.

  • 27、   Parents may worry that their children aren’t getting enough quality sleep. However, now there’s a smart bed to provide adults with sleep data by a smart app. The SleepIQ bed can alert (发出报警声) parents when their children are asleep, as well as if they are risking out of bed. If a child is tossing and turning (辗转反侧), it can also be adjusted to make it more comfortable.

The bed was first introduced at the International Consumer, Electronics Show (CES). It claims to be the only one in the world, which adjusts with children as they grow. Children don’t need to wear a smart-band or alternative wearable device in bed. Instead, the quality of their sleep is measured by sensors(传感器) in the bed, which monitor (监测) their present, average breathing rate, heart rate and movement. Then it assesses (评定) quality of sleep. They are given a SleepIQ score for each night’s sleep. Using an accompanying app, parents can see it clearly. It also allows parents to monitor routines (常规) that affect sleep, such as exercise, caffeine and screen time, helping them to develop a routine that helps develop a good night’s shut-eye.

The bed sends an alert to the app when it detects (探测) a child is out of bed or is restless, such as if he is having a nightmare. Its firmness can be adjusted to change the level of comfort and support to suit children as they grow. A “head tilt (倾斜)” feature for reading is built in, and parents can remotely turn a light out after reading time using the app. There are also fun features such as a “monster scanner”, which uses a mobile phone to check for and fight monsters under the bed. What’s more, an automatic light will guide children, if they need to get up in the middle of the night.

The bed is available online and at Sleep Number stores in the US from around $499, almost the same as the beds we are sleeping on.

1What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The smart bed helping sleep better.

B.Risks that children face when sleeping.

C.How parents take care of children.

D.How to get a good sleep.

2If children sleep on the SleepIQ bed, ________.

A.their sports performance will be improved

B.they no longer need to get up in the middle of the night

C.their health condition will be improved greatly

D.their sleep quality will be improved

3We can know from the text that ________.

A.the smart bed is as cheap as an ordinary one

B.another smart bed is needed with children growing older

C.children will never fall out of the SleepIQ bed

D.the SleepIQ bed is the best bed around the world

    4Having the SleepIQ bed, ________.

    A.children won’t have a nightmare

B.parents can be free from some worries

C.parents don’t need to care for children any more at night

D.children had better not read on the bed

  • 29、If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.

Let’s start with the idea that all of us--especially young people--need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail(足迹)we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. And the difference: is vital. A celebrity is all about fame(名望)--temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character--qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.

Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.

Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy--which shoes, which cell phone--not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities--their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.

How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.

Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight(困苦)of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500,000--enough to build over 70 water wells.

Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude(未加提炼的)oil. Her project has grown to include18 recycling centers in Texas.

The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.

【1】What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?

A.To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.

B.To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.

C.To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.

D.To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.

【2】What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.Heroes make the world go round.

    B.Heroes must believe in themselves.

C.Heroes focus on social welfare programs.

    D.Heroes promote cooperation between people.

【3】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Heroes and celebrities are both valued today.

B.Society doesn’t support the development of heroes.

C.The media turn ordinary celebrities into real heroes.

D.Young people don’t have the belief in their own strength.

【4】How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?

A.By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.

B.By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.

C.By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.

D.By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.

【5】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.More heroes are needed in the world.

B.Celebrities are reported too much in the media.

C.Adults should become role models for young people.

D.Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

  • 32、Face shape lets AI spot rare disorders

People with genetic syndromes (综合征) sometimes have revealing facial features, but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be _______given there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural (神经系统) network that analyses photographs of faces can help doctors _______the possibilities.

Yaron Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built a neural network to look at the overall impression of faces and _______ a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.

They _______ the neural network, called DeepGestalt, on 17,000 images correctly labeled to match more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked AI to _______potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photos of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer among its list of 10 responses 91 per cent of the time.

It’s clearly not _______, but it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.

As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that are most helpful in the determination are_______and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.

The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions about_______. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

  • 40、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Human beings are smart. However, it seems that people are gradually losing their smartness as smartphones become more and more important assistants in their lives, reported news website Record Japan on Oct. 22. As we rely too much on technology instead of our brains, many people have lost three basic abilities, said the website.

The first skill many people have lost is remembering phone numbers. Because phone numbers are stored in smart phone contacts, there's no need to dial a number or look at it again.

And some people may also have lost their sense of direction because navigation apps can guide people anywhere they want to go. These apps can even find shortest routes for you and avoid traffic jams. But the worst lost skills may be social ones, meaning that some people are becoming socially inept(无能的). People often bury themselves in their smart phones. As we're too addicted to what's happening in the virtual world, some of us have lost conversational skills and sometimes can't even tell whether a person is happy or not.

In August, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied 51 students aged 11 and 12 who had over five hours' screen time every day. Their task was to tell the emotions of 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared. The children made an average of 14.02 mistakes at the beginning. But after a five-day camp without electronic (电子的) products, they made only 9.41 mistakes on average. “If you’re not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills,” concluded professor Yalda Uhls from the research.

Luckily, people still have a chance to get these abilities back. You should try to keep your parents' numbers in mind for emergencies. You should also pay more attention to street signs and stores, which will help you to draw a mind map and stop you from getting lost. And the easiest solution to social skill loss is to take a break from electronic devices because we are social creatures. We need device-free time.
