二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、After having her second child in 2012, Victoria was jobless and lost her clear direction. She found herself suffering depression. “My sister, Karen, suggested I try selling something to do with weddings on eBay,” she said, “when the children were asleep, I learned to design invitations on my laptop. Because I already had a laptop and a printer, the only startup costs were buying some cards and envelopes.”

Victoria listed what she made for sale on eBay, but weeks and months passed and she hardly had any sales. Concerned, Karen suggested she should change the designs but Victoria firmly believed that her design was good.

But in January 2013, everything changed dramatically. “I remember getting out of the bath one night and I’d made nearly £200 in orders in the time it had taken to have a bath. Now the demand was so huge that I had to buy a bulk-load of cards and envelopes and purchase another printer. I started to work at 7 pm each night and worked into the early hours.” Victoria believes that her affordable wedding invitations are the key.

Having something else to focus on, the fog of depression soon lifted. By the end of January she had made an impressive £8,000 in just one month. The business now turns over an incredible £80,000 a year, half of which is profit. She continued: “The money has allowed us to upgrade to a three-bedroom house and we have had some great family holidays.” In October, Victoria was one of eleven eBay sellers recognized at the eBay for Business Awards.

“I want to show to other women with little or no experience that even if you’re struggling as I did, you can be a mother and a businesswoman and do both successfully,” smiles Victoria. “I’m a one-woman band but it’s more than enough for me!”

【1】What made the most contribution to Victoria’s success?

    A.The advice from her sister.

    B.The design of the invitations.

C.The help from buyers on eBay.

D.The low price of the invitations.

【2】How much can Victoria earn by selling the invitations a year?

    A.£200.

    B.£8,000.

    C.£40,000.

    D.£80,000.

【3】What personality does Victoria probably have?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Sensitive.

    C.Easygoing.

    D.Determined.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Cure for Depression

    B.Defeating Depression with Business

    C.Selling Wedding Invitations Online

    D.An Unforgettable Experience

  • 27、   Many Beijing residents go to great lengths to avoid breathing the city’s smoggy air, especially when it reaches critical pollution levels, but one local firm decided that canning (灌装) and selling this poor quality air as a souvenir (纪念品) would be a great idea. Believe it or not, he was right.

After seeing a number of companies achieve commercial success by canning fresh air from countries like France, Canada or Australia and selling it in China, Dominic Johnson-Hill, a British-born citizen of Beijing and owner of the Plastered 8 souvenir shop, decided to turn the idea on its head and sell canned Beijing air throughout China and abroad.

“I’d seen people going crazy to buy canned air from Canada and Australia, so I thought it was time to push business the other way,” the entrepreneur said. “They’re perfect gifts! What else are you going to take home when you go home from Beijing? A roast duck? A Plastered T-shirt? These cans are light, portable, you can just imagine someone’s face when they unwrap (打开) it for Christmas.”

The few mouth-fulls of Beijing air come in standard tin cans featuring a couple of city landmarks as well as a bitter description of the contents: “a unique mix of nitrogen, oxygen and some other stuff”. The ironic (讽刺的) souvenirs cost 28 RMB (US $4) and are available at the Plastered 8 shop, as well as on its online shop. But if you’re actually considering buying some, you’d better ask shop in advance, as they are virtually flying off the shelves. Johnson-Hill said that his shop is selling hundreds of Beijing air cans every day.

Personally, the well-sold can probably is an awakening for the public to be concerned about the living conditions. Yet one thing that’s not particularly clear is whether the air is really collected from Beijing, as the cans are labeled as “Made in Shenzhen”. There’s a big chance that’s just a kind of Plastered 8 humor, as they also list “Choking Hazard” and “May have unidentified objects inside.” as warnings.

Anyway, it is probably a unique way to make people realize the importance of protecting the environment.

1What contributes to Dominic’s idea of canning and selling the poor quality air?

A.Try to get used to it. B.Sell it all over the world.

C.Can it as a souvenir. D.Try to push business the other way.

2How may one feel when receiving canned Beijing air for Christmas?

    A.Satisfied. B.Surprised.

    C.Frightened. D.Refreshed.

3Which of the following can replace the underlined word “stuff” in Paragraph 4

    A.Liquids B.Objects

    C.Minerals D.Risks

4What do the underlined words in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Do something opposite. B.Give others a surprise.

    C.Make a big profit. D.Put forward a strange idea.

5What can we infer from the passage?

A.The canned Beijing air may harm people who buy it.

B.The Plastered 8 souvenir shop is famous for its humour.

C.People should make efforts to protect the environment.

D.Dominic Johnson-Hill likes the poor quality air in Beijing.

  • 28、It was about five in the morning in Ontario, Canada, when Donna Strickland's phone rang. The Nobel Prize committee was on the line in Stockholm, calling to tell her she had won the prize in physics.

"I wondered if it was a joke," Strickland said in an interview with a Nobel official after the call. She had been asleep when the call arrived. "Something was wrong because it came so early in the morning. But then I knew it was the right day, and it would have been a cruel joke."

Strickland, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, shares the honor with two other scientists for their work in the 1980s in transforming lasers(激光)into tiny tools that today have countless application. The prize money $1.4 million will he shared among the three. Half the prize went to Strickland and her cooperator Gerard Mourou, a professor at the Ecole Poly technique in France. The other half was awarded to Arthur Ashkin, a retired physicist who worked at the famous Bell Labs in the United States.

Strickland's win is historic in more than one way. It's been over 55 years since a woman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1903, Marie Curie became the first-ever woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. For the next 60 years, no women physicists were awarded. Maria Goeppert Mayer became the second woman physicist to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963.

Strickland herself was surprised to learn she was the third woman to receive the honor in physics. "Is that all, really? I thought there might have been more." she said at a press conference Tuesday. "We need to celebrate women physicists, because we're out there. Hopefully, in time, it will start to move forward at a faster rate."

【1】What was Donna's first reaction after she received the call?

A.She felt all efforts paid off.

B.She was too excited to say a word

    C.She was doubtful about it.

D.She was annoyed at being waken up.

【2】How much was Donna rewarded for winning the Nobel Prize?

    A.About $350,000.

    B.About $2.8million.

    C.About $700,000.

    D.About $1.4 million.

【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.Strickland's achievements in physics.

B.The history of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

C.Strickland's struggle to win the Nobel Prize.

D.Three women winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics in history.

【4】What does the underlined "it" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.The Nobel Prize in Physics.

    B.The achievement of men physicists.

C.The celebration of the Nobel Prize winners.

D.Awarding women physicists the Nobel Prize in Physics.

  • 29、   Rosie, a first-year university student in Beijing, entered a classroom for her oral English exam and slid her topic across the table to Joe, a foreign teacher. My Story, it read. “In middle school, my classmates laughed at me for having deaf-mute parents,” she began softly. “From that moment on, I decided not to tell anybody. But today…”

It’s widely considered taboo(忌讳) in Chinese to discuss the details of an unhappy family life with anyone other than very close friends. However, as Joe has noticed, many Chinese students appear surprisingly comfortable discussing emotional moments from their lives when they speak with foreign teachers in a language different from their own.

“Speaking English,” one of his Chinese students told him, “I feel like another person.” When speaking Chinese, he is kind of reserved; in English class, he is more open. English, to the Chinese speaker, may be like a mask, creating a buffer(缓冲物)between speaking the truth and the listener’s reaction. Students focus on how to speak rather than what is being said. If there’s a misunderstanding, English can take the blame.

Another reason why Chinese students are more comfortable sharing their secrets during English class may be the distinct approach to teaching used by their foreign teachers. “I always try to come to each student, make eye contact, have a 20-second conversation and see how they are doing,” Joe said. Classes taught by Chinese teachers, in contrast, are more formal. Many students said they had never been asked their opinion in class.

Rosie’s English vocabulary is now extensive, but she still can’t find the words to describe her feelings towards the English language. “English makes me feel I am different,” she said. “English is beautiful.”

1Which might be the best title of this passage?

A.Sharing Secrets in English. B.English Is a Beautiful Language.

C.Learning with Foreign Teachers. D.Which Is More Popular, Chinese or English?

2What can we infer from paragraph1?

A.Rosie and Joe are good friends. B.Rosie will mention her personal affairs.

C.Rosie looks down upon the disabled. D.Rosie lacks confidence in the oral exam.

3The underlined word “reserved” can best be replaced by ________.

    A.shy B.curious

    C.terrified D.distinctive

4What is the main idea of paragraph 3 and 4?

A.How students feel when speaking English.

B.What Joe’s approach to teaching English is.

C.How Chinese acts as a mask while communicating.

D.Why students prefer to share emotional stories in English.

  • 35、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

  • 41、DirectionsRead the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

There are various means consumers can do if they find that an item they bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer’s claims. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the“higher up”his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer’s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example,“The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear”is better than“This stereo does not work.”The store manager may advice the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. If a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go to a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumer’s rights.
