二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.

According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.

Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry’s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.

“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple — it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in future.

Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.

In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.

1What was Bina48’s performance like in class?

    A. Far-reaching. B. Insignificant.

    C. Unattractive. D. Extraordinary.

2What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. Dealing with. B. Consulting with.

    C. Giving a speech to. D. Sending a letter to.

3What can we learn from the passage?

    A. It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.

    B. Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.

    C. It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.

    D. Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.

4What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?

    A. It will be able to promote learning and teaching.

    B. It will completely take the place of instructors.

    C. It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.

    D. It will be smart enough to control human beings.

  • 27、   A painter has just completed his course. He took 3 days and painted beautiful scenery. He wanted to know people's opinion about his talent and painting skills.

He put his creation at a busy street and just down below a board which read—“I have painted this piece. Since I'm new to this profession I might have committed some mistakes. Please put a cross wherever you see a mistake.”

While he came back in the evening to collect his painting he was completely shattered to see that whole canvass(画板)was filled with crosses, they criticized the painter ruthlessly.

Disheartened and broken completely he ran to his master's and burst into tears.

This young artist complained, "I’m useless and if this is what I have learnt to paint I'm not worth becoming a painter. People have rejected me completely."

Master smiled and suggested, “My son, I will prove that you are a great artist and have learnt flawless painting. Do as I say without questioning it. It will work.”

Young artist agreed and two days later early morning he presented a replica(复制品) of his earlier painting to his master. Master took that gracefully and smiled.

    “Come with me.”master said.

They reached the same street early morning and displayed the same painting exactly at the same place. Now master took out another board which read—“Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since I ’m new to this profession I might have committed some mistakes in my strokes etc. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. Please do a favor. If you see a mistake, kindly pick up the brush and correct it. ”

    Then they walked back home.

They both visited the place the same evening. The young painter was surprised to see that actually there was not a single correction done so far. Next day again they visited and found painting remained untouched. They say the painting was kept there for a month for no correction came in!

1The painter put his creation at a busy street to_______.

    A. help him to assess his skills in painting

    B. ask others to correct mistakes in the painting

    C. show off his great talent and painting skills

    A. he felt quite determined

    B. he was very annoyed with the comments

    C. he felt greatly discouraged

    D. he was very grateful for their suggestions

3After doing as the master suggested, the young painter found that people passing by the painting______.

    A. had thought it was painted by a master painter

    B. neglected his painting on purpose

    C. didn't want to take the brush to correct it

    D. were satisfied with his painting

4Which saying can best show the theme of the passage?

    A. All things are difficult before they are easy.

    B. Actions speak louder than words.

    C. A bad workman always blames his tools.

    D. It is easier said than done.

  • 28、Sharks use their good sense of smell to search for prey(猎物). But a new study shows that the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean could reduce sharks' ability to find food. It's bad news for a healthy ocean. Sharks are top predators(掠食动物)and are like the ocean's weed controllers.

Dixson works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Her earlier work has shown that clown fish in acidifying(酸化的)water act strangely. "We want to expand this research to sharks .because we know how important it is for sharks to find their food through their sense of smell," said Dixson.

Her team started by placing sharks in each of three different pools for five days. Each pool had a different level of carbon dioxide in it. The first had the same amount as today's ocean water. The second had a level of carbon dioxide that scientists expect to reach by 2050. The third pool had the highest level of carbon dioxide that could develop by the year 2100.

Sharks weren't allowed to eat any food while in the pools. This made sure that they would be hungry. Then, Dixson released the sharks one at a time into a pool with two side-by-side streams of flowing water. In one stream, the researchers pumped water, in which a dead squid had been overnight. This water smelled strongly of the squid. The other stream contained ocean water with no scent(气味). Because each stream flowed at the same rate and in the same direction, the squid smell stayed in its stream. The sharks could choose to swim in either stream.

Sharks that had been swimming for five days in pools of regular ocean water spent more than 60 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream. The same was true for sharks that had been in water with the carbon dioxide level that could develop by the year 2050. But sharks exposed to the highest level of carbon dioxide spent just 15 percent of their time in the squid-scented stream.

1Why did the writer mention the sharks smell at the beginning of the passage?

    A. Because the writer appreciates their ability to find food.

    B. Because the writer considers them dangerous to human beings.

    C. Because the writer intends to show how to control weed in the ocean.

    D. Because the writer worries about the sharks in the ocean.

2What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. What the ocean in the future will be like.

    B. Who helped Dixson conduct the study.

    C. What kinds of pools were used during the study.

    D. What the levels of carbon dioxide will be at in the ocean in the future.

3The researchers pumped water where a dead squid had been overnight to ______.

    A. help the sharks look for food

    B. test the sharks' sense of smell

    C. prove that sharks like eating squids

    D. explain why carbon dioxide in the ocean affects sharks

4What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?

    A. Sharks like the squid-scented stream better.

    B. Sharks like the stream with the high level of carbon dioxide.

    C. Sharks spent 15% of their time in the squid-scented stream.

    D. The high level of carbon dioxide can affect the sharks ability to smell.

  • 29、   More than one billion people currently live in environments where water is in short supply, making water one of the most highly prized natural resources. Scientists are always searching for ways to increase access to this valuable resource. They may have found a solution in an unlikely area: one of the driest places on Earth.

The Namib desert in Africa is one of the world’s driest places, while Namib beetle is a unique organism that grows in this environment because of its amazing physical adaptation. The wings on the Namib beetle are filled with bumps and grooves() that help it collect water from the air. The top of each bump is smooth like glass and attracts water. But the slopes of each bump and the grooves in between the bumps have waxy (带蜡的) surfaces that repel water . Each time the fog occurs, the beetle positions its body at a 45-degree angle to the wind. As the wind pushes the fog across the desert, each bump on the beetle’s back collects water. When enough moisture has been collected from the fog, a drop rolls off the bumps into the waxy grooves and then into the mouth of the beetle.

Scientists are using the Namib beetle’s wing design as a guide for creating their own water-collection surfaces. They have inserted dozens of glass globes into thin layers of wax. Similar to the bumps and grooves on the wings of the beetle, the smooth glass bubbles collect water, while the wax repels it. By placing the glass-andwax panels in environments with high-moisture air, the scientists think they will be able to collect water.

The Namib beetle’s wing design may also provide unexpected solutions to other problems. In areas where thick fog causes chaos, panels of these water-gathering surfaces may be able to remove the fog. This could potentially reduce travel delays at airports and prevent fog-related accidents on roadways. It seems that studying this little beetle may lead to a variety of benefits for humans.

1What will the Namib beetle do when fog appears in the desert?

A.It will release a waxy substance to cover its back.

B.It will place its body in a particular way to collect water.

C.It will create bumps and grooves on its wings.

D.It will open its mouth to drink the water in the air.

2The author focuses on a unique feature of the Namib beetle in order to highlight how the beetle ________________.

A.could serve as a source of water for desert travelers

B.struggles to survive in the dry part of the world

C.uses its wings to stay cool in a dry environment

D.is able to get access to water in the absence of rain

3What’s the writing purpose of this passage?

A.To prove that water can be obtained from moist air.

B.To explain how the Namib beetle adapts to living in a hostile environment.

C.To show how people can apply designs from nature to create solutions to global problems.

D.To stress that water is a valuable resource in many areas on Earth.

  • 32、Face shape lets AI spot rare disorders

People with genetic syndromes (综合征) sometimes have revealing facial features, but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be _______given there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural (神经系统) network that analyses photographs of faces can help doctors _______the possibilities.

Yaron Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built a neural network to look at the overall impression of faces and _______ a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.

They _______ the neural network, called DeepGestalt, on 17,000 images correctly labeled to match more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked AI to _______potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photos of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer among its list of 10 responses 91 per cent of the time.

Gurovich and his team also_______the neural network's ability to distinguish between the different genetic mutations (父异) that can lead to the same syndrome. They used photographs of people with Noonan syndrome, which can result from mutations in any one of five genes.DeepGestalt correctly identified the genetic source of the physical appearance 64 per cent of the time. It’s clearly not _______, but it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.

As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that are most helpful in the determination are_______and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.

The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions about_______. If faces can reveal details about genetics, then employers and insurance providers could, in principle,__________ use such techniques to__________ against people who have a high probability of having certain disorders.__________. Gurovich says the tool will only be __________for use by clinicians.

This technique could bring significant__________ for those who have genetic syndromes. The real value here is that for some of these ultra-rare diseases, the process of diagnosis can be many, many years. This kind of technology can help narrow down the search space and then be confirmed through checking genetic markers. For some diseases, it will cut down the time to diagnosis dramatically. For others, it could perhaps add means of finding other people with the disease and, __________, help find new treatments or cures.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

  • 40、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Cell phones are used everywhere, but on the road they are a dangerous distraction (分心) to drivers and should be forbidden.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that "drivers using a cell phone were four times more likely to have an accident than those not using a phone." The major problem is that the driver is not focused on the road, but on his or her conversation. Cell phone drivers are very unpredictable: they drive too fast or too slow, make improper turns, run red lights and even stop at green ones. It's not only annoying; it's dangerous. Accidents related to cell phones include off a road and crashing into a tree, fences, and buildings and even turning over.

In October at the California Traffic Safety Summit, experts showed that "cell phones used by drivers lead to at least 1,000 deaths per year in California." These are the same problems that occur with drunk driving, which is against the law and strictly enforced. For the same reasons, California needs laws that ban the use of cell phone in cars.

Until we take action to pass new laws, drivers at least need to be more responsible when using cell phones. The American Automobile Association recommends that drivers pull off the road before using a cell phone, have a passenger use it for them, or use voice mail to answer calls. Another suggestion is to keep the phone off while moving or simply not to use it in the car. Before using a cell phone, drivers should ask themselves, "Is this call really that important?"

Cell phones can be a very important link in emergencies, but drivers need to use them wisely. As professional NASCAR racer John Andretti says, "Driving safely is your first responsibility." The best road to safety is to just hang up and drive.
