二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. But mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

【1】What does the passage mainly discuss?

    A. Dogs in our daily lives

    B. Expressions with dogs

    C. The role dogs take in America

    D. Attitude of the American citizens to dogs

【2】What does dog-tired describe in the passage?

    A. Describe a very successful person.

    B. Describe the dogs are very tired after a long walk.

    C. Describe a rainy and cloudy weather.

    D. Describe the heavy degree of exhaustion of people after long time work.

【3】How are people compared to dogs in bad ways?

    A. By mean dogs and junkyard dogs.

    B. By lazy dogs and bad dogs.

    C. By sick dogs and tired dogs.

    D. None of them is right.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old.

B.It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills.

C.Junkyard dogs are careful in money arrangement.

D.Fierce persons arent so awful as their appearance sometimes.

  • 22、People Who Can’t Count

A recent study has discovered that dyscalculia, the mathematical inability in reading, affects about 5% of children in Britain. There is no simple way of finding out the reason and kids with this learning disability are usually labelled unintelligent.

So what exactly is this learning disability in mathematics? Unlike most people, dyscalculics cannot recognise three or four objects. 【1】 For example, they need to count the books on the table before they can say how many there are. In other words, they have to count them one by one. This is where they are different from others. The majority of us, if shown three or four similar things, can immediately recognise them.

【2】 They cannot understand, for instance, why two and three makes five. Another problem is not being able to tell which group contains more objects than the other. Experiments have proved that dyscalculics have not developed the part of the brain responsible for processing numbers.

There are also problems with the abstract concept of time for dyscalculics. 【3】 If your best friend is always late, he might be suffering from dyscalculia. Dyscalculics cannot keep track of time, and they never know how much time they have spent getting ready and how long it will take them to get to work. In addition, research has shown that dyscalculics behave oddly in social situations.【4】 This poor ability can explain why they never know how much change they are due or what kind of budget they need for their holiday.

On the other hand, dyscalculics are very good at creative arts. People suffering from dyscalculia can become painters or poets. Dyscalculia does not seem to delay language acquisition. Dyscalculic children acquire language at the same time as, if not earlier than, most children and have no problem learning to read or write. 【5】

A.Dyscalculics have difficulties in using numbers at all.

B.This disability scares children away from learning mathematics.

C.They have to go through the routine of counting even a small number of objects.

D.It is quite reasonable for dyscalculics to solve this kind of specific problem at any time.

E.They never know how much they should tip the waiter or they’ve got left after a shopping trip.

F.We can see that dyscalculia is only a learning disability, not a general indication of intelligence.

G.This can account for their difficulty in reading schedules and remembering the order in which things have happened.

  • 23、Grant Wood’s American Gothic caused a stir(轰动)in 1930 when it was exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago and awarded a prize of 300 dollars. Newspapers across the country carried the story, and the painting of a farmer and a younger woman posed before a white house brought the artist instant fame.

In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in the small southern Iowa town of Eldon. Wood was so fascinated by it that he decided to paint the house along with the kind of people he thought should live in that house. In the painting, the farmer is modeled on his dentist. Dr. Byron McKeeby. His younger sister Nan served as a model for the woman (imagined to be the farmer’s wife or daughter). Wood wanted to give a description of the traditional roles of men and women as the man is holding a pitchfork (干草叉) symbolizing hard labor. Each element was painted separately; the models sat separately and never stood in front of the house. The Gothic style of the house inspired the painting’s title.

American Gothic remains one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting has become part of American popular culture. Some believe that Wood used it to satirize(讽刺) the narrow-mindedness that has been said to characterize Midwestern culture. The painting may also be read as a praise of the moral virtue or rural America or even as a mixture of praise and satire. American Gothic is one of the few images to reach the status of cultural symbol, along with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

【1】What can we learn about American Gothic?

    A.It won a prize of £300.

B.The two characters in it posed before the White House.

    C.a European country

    D.the city of Chicago

【3】Grant Wood chose the two models __________.

A.to describe traditional roles of men and women

B.to praise the moral virtue of rural America

C.to make his dentist and his sister famous

A.the name of a small town

    B.the man and the woman

C.the Gothic style of the house

    D.the pitchfork symbolizing hard labor

  • 24、   Deep in the middle of Sri Lanka, a massive column of rock reaches out from the green tropical forest. It is 660 feet tall and features frescoes (壁画), graffiti, and landscaped gardens.

The rock is known as Sigiriya and holds a special place in the island's cultural history.

It was established as the stronghold of a king over 1,500 years ago, and today the Sigiriya complex stands as one of the earliest preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

Located in the Central Province, the column of rock is somewhat central to the country. The rock is known as Sihagiri, meaning "Lion Rock", a nod to the giant animal carved from stone which greeted visitors at the entrance.

In 476 BC. King Dhatusena ruled over Sri Lanka. One of his illegal sons, Kashyapa, wanted the throne (王位). Kashyapa overthrew Dhatusena and drove his brother Moggallana to Southern India. Kashyapa crowned himself king in 477 BC.

King Kashyapa chose Sigiriya as his palace because its position was an advantage to the defensive stronghold, offering fantastic 360-degree views. Plans to build a city quickly unfolded and after several years, the Sigiriya complex had become a business center for the new King.

Sigiriya was both a palace and a fortress (堡垒); the overall complex featured five gates and measured just under 3 km by just over 1 km. The site plan consisted of a fortan upper palace on the top of the rock, and lower palaces at ground level. The king also constructed gardens throughoutand for protection a river with walls surrounded the complex.

Frescoes decorate the western side of the rock, along with the mirror wall, a brick face covered in a highly-polished white plaster. When new, the wall was said to be able to produce Reflections.

Over time the Mirror Wall became a graffiti board, covered in verses written by visitors. Known as "Sigiri Graffiti", some of the messages date to the 8th century CE.

1It is implied in the passage that Sigiriya was built to ______________.

A.preserve the culture of Sri Lanka B.prove the ancient urban planning

C.keep the King from being attacked D.protect the green tropical forest

2According to the passage, some visitors would _________.

A.have a reflection before the Mirror Wall

B.leave comments on the Mirror Wall

C.draw beautiful paintings of girls on the wall

D.be lost in thought before the Mirror Wall

3What do we know about Sigiriya?

A.Its entrance is carved like a lion. B.Its gardens are at ground level.

C.Its western side is a mirror. D.Its palaces are on the top of the rock.

4What is the best title of the passage?

A.The giant lions in Sri Lanka. B.The pearl of the Indian Ocean.

C.The Lion Rock of Sri Lanka. D.The mirror wall in a rock.
