二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?

The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math, trying to make the dream of time travel come true.

Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing called “spacetime.” He said there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.

Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on Earth or in space.

Stephen Hawking believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us?

The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.

Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? Most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.

【4】What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?

  • 23、   Campeche is a city with a tumultuous history. Originally this area was settled by the Mayans. The first Spanish colonizers arrived in 1517 and established Campeche as the main port in the region. Unsurprisingly, this made Campeche an attractive target for pirates who first arrived in the late 16 century. For the next 200 years, Campeche was frequently attacked. Nevertheless, it is a delightful city and filled with interesting things to do.

Explore the old city of Campeche

There are a lot of beautiful restored old towns in Mexico, but Campeche is one of the nicest, cleanest and most elegant. The Campeche neighborhood is lovely and colorful, with neat sidewalks and smoothly laid out roads!

    Wander along the Campeche Malecon

One of the nicest things about Campeche is its waterfront setting. The best way to enjoy that? Wandering along the malecon, or the walkway along the waterfront, just before sunset. This is the time when it cools down and everyone comes out to see things and to be seen. You'll see couples posing for photographers, joggers, cyclists, elderly people having conversations and groups of teenagers giggling.

Stop for a Bite at Calle 59

Calle 59 is a pedestrian-only street filled with outdoor tables from the surrounding restaurants. You can cat here at night, but a lot of people come for drinks. This is the one place in Campeche that feels touristy—its tables are filled with giant beers that get shared among multiple peoples.

    A.Campeche has a large population.

B.Campeche is a city with mixed heritage.

C.Campeche has experienced years of civil war.

D.Campeche once appealed to pirates for its culture.

【2】What's the best thing for visitors to do before sunset?

A.Having a nice walk along the malecon.

  • 24、   When night falls in the Netherlands, lights dance across a farm and create a dreamy landscape. Here, in a field inspired by beauty and infused with photobiology(光生物学), art intersects with agriculture. Yet, there is more than what meets the eye; these lights also provide higher productivity and a more sustainable crop.

This magical field is part of a project called GROW and was created by Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, who lived in the city and had a desire to connect people to the source of their food in an inspiring way. “How can we make the farmer the hero? We barely know where our food comes from,” Roosegaarde said.

His vision was to combine science and art, and in so doing, create a better world. Longing to offer the world light in dark times, he set to work in a 5-acre field of leeks(韭葱). He tapped into his own design concept alongside artists, a team of designers and experts at the Wageningen University.

Using the science of photobiology, the group discovered that certain mixes of red, blue and ultraviolet lights promote plant growth。The team then positioned LEDs in different places across the field. These lights move up and down in order to ensure the light is evenly distributed across the area。And when these lights move at night, they seem to dance, creating a poetic dreamscape. “It's very futuristic and also very romantic, in a way,” Roosegaarde said.

Aside from being beautiful and promoting growth, the team observed that due to these lights, they needed to use 50 percent fewer pesticides(杀虫剂) on the crop. This is because this specific recipe of lights activated the defense system of the plants. And as it works on all crops, not just leeks, Roosegaarde foresees a way to reduce the use of pesticides on many other plants.

Roosegaarde's project will soon be touring 40 countries, sending its dancing lights across the world.

【1】What do Daan Roosegaarde's words in paragraph 2 suggest?

A.People living in cities tend to waste food.

B.Farmers are seen as heroes by the public.

C.It's important to know the source of food.

D.Tracking where food comes from is easy.

【2】What did Daan Roosegaarde do for his project?

    A.He invented low-cost pesticides.

B.He came up with the design concept.

    C.He bought a 50-acre field of leeks.

D.He learned dancing skills in a college.

【3】Why are fewer pesticides needed on the crop with the lights alongside?

A.The lights kill off most of the pests on it.

B.The lights make it more resistant to pests.

C.The lights are too bright for pests to tolerate.

D.The lights are equipped with a defense system.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Plants Are Beautiful in the Light

B.Plants Are Great Dancers at Night

C.Art and Science Meet in the Fields

    D.Dancing Lights Become Widespread
