  • 21、Geographers are interested in the spatial patterns observed on earth. Bridging the natural and social sciences, Geography is the interdisciplinary study of environments and how people interact with the environment. It is important to study geography because many of the world's problems require understanding the interdependence between human activities and the environment. Geography is therefore a beneficial major for students because its theories and methods provide them with analytical skills relevant to occupations focused on solving social and environmental problems. The Department of Geography offers eight majors that help students tailor their focus of study.

The Geography—Globalization and Development major will provide students with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary global issues and a geographical framework for analyzing key issues involved in national and international development. Reflecting the discipline of geography as a whole, this major emphasizes an integrated approach to studying the relationship of global change to individual and community well-being by combining the benefits of area studies with theoretical and topical investigations in the curriculum.

Our department is committed to excellence in both teaching and advising. Several of our faculty members have received teaching awards, and we are known across campus for the quality of our advising. As a geography major, you will meet one-on-one with your faculty advisor every semester during advising week, and you are always welcome to talk with your advisor at any time throughout the semester whenever questions may arise. In addition to advising our students about their academic programs, we provide timely information about internships, nationally competitive awards, and other opportunities as they arise. Many of our students complete internships and several of our students over the last few years have received nationally competitive awards.

  • 22、   During a conversation with someone, you've probably had to compete for their attention with a technological device and lost. Maybe the person in front of you diverted their attention to their latest 'urgent" notifications. They' ve probably even interrupted your conversation to answer a call, answer a text message, or check their social media.

Clinical psychologist and sociologist Sherry Turkle has conducted extensive research on the subject that she shared in her book Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age(2015). In this book, she stated that teenagers have reduced their empathetic capacity by 40%as well as their ability to engage in deep conversation, and that cell phones are to blame.

Nowadays, a large part of social and work related interactions occur through electronic means, such as computers, phones, and tablets. Face- to-face conversations have been relegated to the background, and some people even see them as a waste of time. If you have to solve a business problem, you send an email. If you want to ask for forgiveness, you write a text message.

Since facing conflict or emotional situations can generate anxiety, new technologies offer the possibility of reducing some of it. Young people justify using new forms of communication as an easier and faster way to express their thoughts. They say that mobile devices allow them to rewrite what they want to say, correct mistakes, or avoid tense situations that they wouldn't know how to solve in person.

The problem is that screens don't allow us to enjoy one of the most enriching part of conversation: non-verbal language. We miss out on gestures, intonation, looks, and real emotions. This is quite worrying because, according to experts, 70% of communication is non-verbal.

Human interaction has been replaced with “memes" or emoticons. It's even hard for people to maintain deep conversations for extended periods of time. As a result, humans now have a lot of difficulties in managing their emotions, facing difficulties, and carrying out responsibilities. If you don't share content on the Internet, it's like you don't exist. If you don't share your vacation on social media, people may believe that you didn't actually take it or that you didn't enjoy it, Therefore, what you share is a reflection of who you claim to be, but not who you really are.

Under these circumstances, it's harder to empathize with others and put yourself in their shoes to try to understand their emotions and thoughts. The world is becoming purely visual and superficial.

People build and reinforce their connections during face to-face conversations. This is because you can see how the other person feels and listen to their ideas and concerns. You can empathize with them because you can see their joy or suffering with your own eyes.

Deep, personal conversations awaken emotions inside you. They give you a space to open up and vent, to be heard and respected.

1We can infer from Para.2 that the book.

A.stresses the importance of face to-face conversation

B.explains teenagers' ability to engage in deep conversation

C.analyzes the reasons for competing for others' attention

D.regards face to-face conversation as a waste of time

2The underlined word 'non—verbal" in Para. 5 probably means

    A.foreign B.spoken C.written D.sign

3The author would agree that social media platforms.

    A.promote deep personal conversations

B.help to put yourself in others' shoes

C.don't necessarily show people's true emotions

D.build connections because you can see joys and sorrows of others

  • 23、   Every person plans to run off to some tropical isle, but few do. Real life, family, work, and monetary limitations get in the way. Ian Fleming let none of these considerations stop him.

After the war, Fleming set down his schedule. The first week of January saw him leave England and travel to Jamaica. The first week of March saw his return. He accepted his job at Kemsley newspapers without compromise this portion of the year would be set aside for Jamaica or he would look elsewhere for employment.

For 6 years Fleming traveled each winter to Jamaica, lounging in paradise, romancing women, chasing the sunset, but it was not until he faced the pressure of a married woman who was pregnant with his child did Fleming start the writer’s journey which would change his life and popular culture forever. As Fleming waited in Jamaica for Anne’s divorce to become final, he wrote the first draft of a novel, Casino Royale.

Fleming’s career as a writer deserves more examination than can be offered here, but suffice it to say, over the next 12 years, Ian Fleming transformed his elite existence, his arrogance, his style, and his acid wit into some of the greatest thrillers ever written. Fleming incurred the respect of authors as diverse as Raymond Chandler, Kingsley Amis, and Edith Sitwell. His fans included John, Jackie, and Bobby Kennedy, and his social circle included Prime Minister Anthony Eden, Evelyn Waugh, and Somerset Maugham.

Fleming filled out the 12 years of Bond with great adventure journalism. Even in stories which had little action or pay off, such as his short non-fiction book, The Diamond Smugglers, the “Fleming-flair” ensured exciting reading. He wrote the “Atticus” column for the Sunday Times, proving a wonderful conduit for inside intelligence information, and clever rebukes(指责).

Regardless of book sales or family obligations, Fleming managed to live the life he wanted. As the years passed, his passion for golfing increased so he took more time with it. Fleming’s long-term fascination with America grew, so he traveled there more often.

Ian Fleming’s full life caught up with him through his heart. It may be that years of drinking and smoking took their toll, or that the butter-rich cooking Fleming loved was the culprit. Or maybe it was just genetics. Whatever the cause, Fleming’s health declined in the late 1950s. This plus anxieties in the marriage increased Fleming’s depression. With the success of Bond, the world came knocking at Fleming’s door, and he had a harder time shutting those out that he did not want in his life.

Nonetheless, Fleming fought the loosing battle of his weakening heart by throwing more fuel on the fire. He continued to drink and smoke, making some excuses but not many. He wrote books he wanted to read, and traveled the world with style and authority. By this time, Fleming had already earned his own fortune, created his own identity, and ruled his own literary empire.

1According to the second paragraph, Fleming accepted the job offered by Kemsley newspaper __________.

    A. and had to give up his yearly holiday plan to Jamaica

    B. because he was offered to work in Jamaica every winter

    C. so that he wouldn’t have to look for employment elsewhere

    D. on condition that he took two months off to Jamaica every year

2What led Fleming follow the path of writing?

    A. His dream to be a writer.

    B. The pressure from a woman.

    C. His potential for literature.

    D. His state of health.

3When he began writing, Fleming never expected that __________.

    A. he would change popular culture

    B. he could get over the pressure

    C. Anne would have a divorce

    D. Anne would keep his child

    4Fleming’s thrillers reflected his __________.

    A. sense for popular culture B. relationship with Anne

    C. own personalities D. life at Jamaica

5The fact that “Fleming filled out the 12 years of Bond with great adventure journalism” shows that __________.

    A. Fleming took up journalism when he finished Bond’s adventures

    B. Fleming put Bond through many thrilling adventures

    C. Fleming described Bond as an adventurous journalist

    D. Fleming experienced Bond’s adventures when he was a journalist

6According to the passage, Fleming died of __________.

    A. an unidentified reason B. a disease of the heart

    C. an unknown family disease D. over drinking and smoking

  • 24、   "Keep your eyes open. This is where the Ewoks live.' The one-hour drive outside of San Francisco, covered in clouds along windy roads, has inspired my husband to say this sentence at least a dozen times.

We finally arrive at Muir Woods National Park. I explain the strange green stuff on trunks of trees as we pass by--mos (苔藓), something my 5-year-old son Cole has never seen in the desert where we live.

"Mom, are Ewoks real? I think they maybe aren't real. " There's a question in Cole's voice, like he's trying on this idea.

We've been down the road of pretending versus reality before, what with all the talk of superheroes and such around our house. "I think you are right. Ewoks are just in the movies. But it would be cool if they were real, right ?"

Cole's silent for a while, thinking. "I just saw an Ewok’s ear back there!" Coles spotted an additional Ewok arm and one full body of the tiny hairy creatures. It does indeed look like we are in the Ewok forest of Star Wars.

Cole's imagination is more than I can understand. What do plants eat? Which is the best planet? Which rocks float? He loves life. He loves his inner world and outer existence equally.

I hear a lot of worry from parents about media sucking the souls from our children, taking away their time for creative play. For us, this hasn’t been the case. Cole and his brother are quite knowledgeable in the realities of life when it comes to Angry Birds, Curious George, and the adventures of Indiana Jones. These characters, and others of their own invention, live in my home like visitors, joining us on walks and outings. I appreciate them, though not all the time, for the company they give my sons and their busy minds.

I think of media characters as an add-on to already busy minds, by carefully monitoring who gets invited into our lives, they become part of the parenting team. They teach loyalty adventure, curiosity--lessons I'm trying to convey, but in a much cooler way than I can.

Pretence is awesome. It provides practice for real life without the ordinary interfering.

1Where are the family heading for?

    A.The cinema. B.A park. C.San Francisco. D.A desert.

2What can we know about Cole from the passage?

A.He is proud of himself. B.He is full of curiosity.

C.He is courageous. D.He is considerate.

3What do many parents think of their children playing via media?

    A.It wastes children's time.

B.It can make their children relaxed.

C.It can engage their children in learning actively.

D.It can accompany their children in their absence.

4What's the authors attitude to the media characters in parenting children?

    A.Indifferent. B.Critical. C.Supportive. D.Disapproving.
