二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to a survey published by the American Institutes for Research last year, a total of 57 colleges were operating some form of CBE programs and about 85 percent of all the higher education officials said they were either designing a CBE program at their school or were considering doing so.

Students in a CBE program choose a central field of study, just as they would at a traditional college or university. Yet instead of attending a series of classes led by professors or teaching assistants at schools, the students study online and direct themselves.

CBE programs require students to show their understanding of a given set of sills Students must prove their mastery of skills that relate to their field of choice by taking related exams. Once they have met all the requirements of their study programs, the students will get their degrees.

CBE programs have made use of many new technologies, especially internet and online media. This helps reduce barriers for nontraditional and other students by bringing higher education to them. And programs that permit students to work at their own speed may save students' money by reducing the time it takes for them to earn a degree.

But some educators have concerns about the value of the education that CBE programs offer. Johann Neem at Western Washington University argues that the purpose of higher education is not simply to help students master certain skills. It should teach students how to think critically (批判性地) understand the subjects they are studying more deeply and see how they are connected to other subjects. Only that way can they put the knowledge to better use.

He said, “You need to explore, think .. get shaken, have a conversation and struggle. And those things take time.”

Instead of supporting CBE, he adds, policy makers and educators should look for ways to improve access and reduce costs for traditional higher education.

【1】How are CBE programs different from traditional college education?

A.They require students to choose their subjects.

B.They offer shorter curricula and are less expensive.

C.They heavily rely on the information technologies.

D.They allow students to take easier examinations.

【2】What can we learn from Johann Neem's words?

A.Free access to traditional education should be provided.

B.Higher education just focuses on critical thinking skills.

C.Students should spend longer time completing the degree courses.

D.College students should be challenged to explore around their subjects.

【3】How does Johann Neem's attitude toward CBE programs?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Sympathetic.

    D.Uncaring.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To press policy-makers to provide more affordable education.

B.To show the disadvantages of the traditional college education.

C.To introduce a new controversial trend in the higher education.

D.To encourage educators to improve the quality of CBE programs.

  • 22、You’re sitting across from a robot, staring at a chessboard. Finally, you see a move that looks pretty good. You reach out and push your queen forward. Now it’s the robot’s turn. Its computer brain calculates a winning move in a second. But when it tries to grab a knight, it knocks down a row of pawns. And it loses the game.

“Robots are heavy handed,” says Ken Goldberg, an AI expert at the University of California. A computer can easily defeat a human grandmaster at the game of chess. Yet a robot has trouble picking up an actual chess piece.

Goldberg discovered that robots face three challenges in grabbing an object. Number one is the ability to see an object and figure out where it is in space. Cameras and sensors that measure distance have gotten much better at this in recent years. But robots still get confused by anything shiny or transparent.

The second challenge is control. People are good at controlling movement, but not perfect. To test yourself, Goldberg says, “Reach out, then touch your nose. Try to do it fast for more times!” You won’t be able to touch the exact same spot on your nose every single time. Likewise, a robot’s cameras and sensors won’t always be in perfect sync with its moving “hand” and it could miss something or drop it.

Physics poses the final challenge. Physics predicts motion. But on small scales, this can be unpredictable. To see why, put a pencil on the floor, then give it a big push. Put it back in its starting place and try again, Goldberg says, “If you push it the same way three times, the pencil usually ends up in a different place.” Very tiny bumps on the floor or the pencil may change the motion.

Despite these challenges, people grasp things all the time. As you do this, your brain is performing incredible calculation and coordination. You just don’t notice it because you do it without thinking.

【1】How does the robot lose the chess game according to the text?

    A.By making wrong calculation.

    B.By knocking over the chessboard.

C.By knocking down some chess pieces.

D.By pushing forward the wrong chess piece.

【2】What may prevent a robot telling the exact location of an object?

    A.Shape.

    B.Distance.

    C.Its own movements.

    D.Shiny things.

【3】What can be inferred about robots?

A.They have difficulty in predicting motion.

B.They should never be allowed to touch our noses.

C.Their sensors are in perfect sync with their hands.

D.Their movements are affected by the unsmooth floor.

【4】What is an advantage that humans have over robots?

    A.Grabbing things.

    B.Avoiding danger.

    C.Controlling speed.

    D.Recognizing objects.

  • 23、   It was in the archives (档案室) of the Archbishop of York that Matthew Collins had a sudden insight: He was surrounded by millions of animal skins.

Another person might say they were surrounded by books and manuscripts written on parchment, which is made from skins, usually of cows and sheep. Collins, however, had been trying to make sense of animal-bone fragments from archaeological digs, and he began to think about the advantages of studying animal skins, already cut into rectangles and arranged neatly on a shelf. Archaeologists consider themselves lucky to get a few dozen samples, and here were millions of skins just sitting there.

In recent years, archaeologists and historians have awakened to the potential of ancient DNA extracted from human bones and teeth. DNA evidence has enriched — and complicated — stories of prehistoric human migrations. It has provided tantalizing clues to epidemics such as the black death. It has identified the remains of King Richard III, found under a parking lot. But Collins isn’t just interested in human remains. He’s interested in the things these humans made; the animals they bred, slaughtered, and ate; and the economies they created.

That’s why he was studying DNA from the bones of livestock — and why his lab is now at the forefront of studying DNA from objects such as parchment and beeswax. These objects can fill in gaps in the written record, revealing new aspects of historical production and trade. How much beeswax came from North Africa, for example?

Collins splits his time between Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen, and it’s hard to nail down exactly what kind of — ologist he is. He has a knack for gathering experts as diverse as parchment specialists, veterinarians, geneticists, archivists, economic historians, and protein scientists (his own background). “All I do is connect people together,” he said. “I’m just the ignorant one in the middle.”

However, it didn’t take long for his group to hit their first culture conflict. In science and archaeology, destructive sampling is at least tolerated, if not encouraged. But book conservators were not going to let people in white coats come in and cut up their books. Instead of giving up or fighting through it, Sarah Fiddyment, a postdoctoral research fellow working with Collins, shadowed conservationists for several weeks. She saw that they used white Staedtler erasers to clean the manuscripts, and wondered whether that rubbed off enough DNA to do the trick. It did; the team found a way to extract DNA and proteins from eraser pieces, a compromise that satisfied the team found a way to extract DNA and proteins from eraser pieces, a compromise that satisfied everyone. The team has since sampled 5,000 animals from parchment this way.

Collins is not the first person to think of getting DNA from parchment, but he’s been the first to do it at scale. Studying the DNA in artifacts is still a relatively new field, with many prospects that remain unexplored. But in our own modern world, we’ve already started to change the biological record, and future archaeologists will not find the same treasure of hidden information in our petroleum-laden material culture. Collins pointed out that we no longer rely as much on natural materials to create the objects we need. What might have once been leather or wood or wool is now all plastic.

1How is Collin’s study different from the study of other archaeologists?

A.He studies human skins and bones.

B.He is the first person to study animal skins.

C.He studies objects related to humans and their lives.

D.His study can provide clues to previous epidemics.

2Collin thinks of himself as ignorant because _____.

A.his major doesn’t help his research

B.he can’t connect experts of different fields

C.he finds it hard to identify what kind of — ologist he is

D.his study covers a wide range of subjects beyond his knowledge

3What can be inferred form the passage?

A.Destructive sampling is not allowed in the field of science and archeology.

B.Collin made a compromise by only studying copies of books made of animal skins.

C.Book protectors were opposed to Collin’s study because his group tracked them for several weeks.

D.It is difficult for future archeologists to study what society is like today due to plastic objects.

4What may be the appropriate title of this passage?

    A.A new discovery in archaeology

B.A lab discovering DNA in old books

C.Archaeology on animals seeing a breakthrough

D.Collin’s contributions to the identification of old books

  • 24、   If, for some reason, you had 2,010 empty plastic bottles, what would you do? You’d probably sell them cheaply, right? But Xia Yu collected 2,010 bottles and built a boat with them. As you read this, Xia is, in fact, on a river somewhere in Anhui, slowly going towards his destination: the Expo Garden in Shanghai. 2,010 plastic bottles were to celebrate Expo (世博会) 2010 Shanghai. On the opening day of the Expo, Xia, together with five friends, went on a 1, 500km journey from Xiangtan to the Expo Garden, in spite of the doubt whether they’ll make it. After all, the boat they are on can hardly be called a boat. It cost only 2,000 yuan to build in a month.

What’s keeping Xia going is a major cause behind the trip. “We are examining water pollution through our journey and trying to promote a low-carbon (低碳) lifestyle. Before we started, no one believed we could sail the boat to the Dongting Lake. But we made it.” But as they expected, the journey has not always been smooth. Of the six from Xiangtan, four gave up. As of the press time (到发稿时), only Xia and his friend Huang Ying were on the boat. Huang suffered from a disease when they reached Jiujiang, Jiangxi province, Xia said, “There are so many things that can stop us from making it to Shanghai, like the weather, health, and sometimes swift river water”.

The boat was produced in a factory according to our design, and perhaps it’s not in a very good condition. But, Xia said, “we are wearing life jackets. Some boats passing by offered help”. What is more of a reward for Xia and Huang is that the Yangtze River turned out much cleaner than they had expected. Although Xia and Huang are uncertain about the journey ahead, they are quite happy with what they have already achieved. After all, it’s not the destination that counts. It’s always the course that matters the most.

1Xia Yu doubts the success of the journey because of .

A.such a long journey on the river

B.the poor boat and the bad weather

C.few people taking part in the journey

D.the seriously polluted river in some parts

2Which of the following is NOT the purpose of the journey?

    A.To examine water pollution.

    B.To celebrate Expo 2010 Shanghai.

C.To win a race on the water.

    D.To promote a low-carbon lifestyle.

3From the text we know that .

A.they stay on the boat at night

B.three people gave up due to their bad health

C.Xia Yu and his mate have arrived in Shanghai

D.Huang suffered from a disease on the journey
