  • 21、   For a number of Indians who for over half a century have replayed a race again and again, Milkha Singh's 400 metres final run at the Rome Olympics should be among the greatest heartbreaks in global sporting history. In fact, they hoped it would throw up a different result.

However, continued praise for the man decades later is due to the effort by India's greatest track athlete on that September day in the Italian capital, though he still missed out on becoming India's first Olympic track medallist.

As he was growing up, he used to run barefoot daily on hot sand to school, which was situated 20 kilometres from his house. He thinks this was good training but knows it is not possible to ask children to do this today. However, he does feel that the early identification of talented athletes is also important for India's athletic teams to shine.

India has in the last few years judged success purely in terms of medals, but looking into the past reveals how a more generous generation saluted Milkha as a pioneer. Milkha is India's finest track athlete of all time. He remains the only Indian male to win an individual Commonwealth Games athletics gold—he won the 400 metres at Cardiff in 1958,the first athlete from independent India to do so.

Since retiring from athletics, the former champion athlete has set up the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust, which helps poorer families survive if an athlete in their family has died. A percentage of the profits from the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag are going to his trust.

Finally, let's read a quote from Milkha himself: “There is no shortcut to success.” A scene in the film shows Milkha Singh running with injured feet—this actually happened. “I haven't found an alternative to hard work. You need to be patient, dedicated and true to yourself and your work.”

【1】What has won Milkha Singh continued praise?

    A.His early hard life experience.

    B.His outstanding athletic talent.

C.His status in global sports history.

D.His effort to win an Olympic medal.

【2】What does Milkha Singh think of his early training?

    A.Exciting.

    B.Unbearable.

    C.Beneficial.

    D.Useless.

【3】What did Milkha Singh do after his retirement?

A.He turned into a movie actor.

    B.He learned to do business.

    C.He became an athletic trainer.

    D.He engaged in charity work.

【4】What can we learn from Milkha Singh's words?

    A.Hard work leads to success.

    B.Do something different.

    C.Medals measure everything.

    D.Stick to your dream.

  • 22、Several years ago, the mayor of Chicago, Illinois, visited Germany, a leader in green roof design. Later he decided to have vegetation planted on Chicago City Hall. Today, the tops of many other buildings also look like parks. In Canada, the Coast Plaza Hotel in Vancouver has a forest on its roof. New York City has an unusual example farm for hydroponics. The farm is on a boat called the Science Barge. Rainwater and river water are used to grow lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The farm shows the possibilities for designing rooftop systems.

Green roofs are designed to save energy and capture rainwater. Rooftops covered with plants help keep buildings cool. They can extend the life of a roof. And they can reduce water running off into streets and storming water systems.

Experts say green roofs usually do not get much above 27℃. So temperatures might not be a problem for growing. But rooftop gardeners have to be careful not to put too much weight on the roof. This is true whether plants are grown in soil or water.

Earlier in 2008, researchers in Texas reported that green roofs can reduce a building's air conditioning costs by about onefifth compared to blacktop roofs.  But they also reported that not all green roofs perform equally well. They found that designs differ in their ability to keep buildings cool and to capture rainwater. The researchers put experimental roofs on top of metal insulated (隔热的) boxes, to recreate green roof conditions. The study compared products from six companies to help businesses understand how to improve their designs. Each rooftop had sixteen different kinds of plants native to Texas. The researchers say the presence of native plants likely helped all the green roofs capture water better compared to sedums. Sedums are plants that need little water and often are used on green roofs. The native plants could take in more water and release more of it to the atmosphere.

    【1】The author gave Paragraph 1 to ________.

    A. tell us what is green roof design

    B. tell us Germany is the country that leads or guides the green roof design

    C. introduce some famous hotels in the world

    D. lead to the topic of the passage

【2】The advantages of green roofs are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT ________.

    A. changing the local weather

    B. prolonging the roof's life

    C. keeping the house cool

    D. reducing the house's air conditioning costs

【3】According to the passage, which conclusion is WRONG?

    A. Sometimes green roofs may break down the house.

    B. Not all the green roofs can reduce the building's air conditioning costs equally.

    C. Different designs of green roofs have different effects on buildings.

    D. Sedums are a kind of plants native to Texas.

【4】The experiment is mentioned in the last paragraph ________.

    A. to find out how many different plants in Texas

    B. to show us how to design green roofs

    C. to introduce a kind of roof made of metal

    D. to provide proofs to improve the design of green roofs

  • 23、   Selective breeding, also known as artificial selection, is a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable traits. It can be used to produce tastier fruits and vegetables, crops with greater resistance to pests, and larger animals that can be used for meat.

Perhaps the earliest example of selective breeding is the domestic dog. Scientists believe that the domestic dog evolved from the wild gray wolf, and through artificial selection, humans were able to create hundreds of different dog breeds. As people domesticated and bred dogs, they favored specific traits, like size or intelligence, for certain tasks, such as hunting, shepherding, or companionship. As a result, many dog breeds vastly differ in appearance, a unique phenomenon in the animal world, as different breeds of a single species generally look like each other. The Chihuahua and the Dalmatian, for instance, are both dogs, yet they share few physical features.

Selective breeding has also been practiced in agriculture for thousands of years. Almost every fruit and vegetable eaten today is a product of artificial selection. By picking out wild cabbage plants with specific characteristics, farmers were able to create a variety of vegetables from a single source, each with differing flavors. Broccoli, for example, was developed from wild cabbage plants that hadn't enough flower development while kale came from Brassica oleracea with larger leaves.

Corn is an unusual product of selective breeding. Unlike rice, wheat, and cabbage, which have clear ancestors, there is no wild plant that looks like corn. The earliest records of corn indicate that the plant was developed in southern Mexico 6,000—10,000 years ago from a grass called teosinte. Scientists believe that early Mexican farmers selected only the largest and tastiest seeds of teosinte for planting. This process allowed Mexicans to develop corn very quickly, as small changes in the plant's genetic makeup had dramatic effects on the grain's taste and size.

Without selective breeding, many of the plants and animals on earth today would not exist. However, every coin has two sides.

【1】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1 ?

A.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    B.Add some background information.

    C.Provide scientific data for readers.

    D.Explain a scientific study method.

【2】Chihuahua and Dalmatian are mentioned to show          .

    A.selective breeding is very successful

    B.selective breeding leads to biodiversity

C.selective breeding brings difference in appearance

D.selective breeding might bring about new species

【3】What is special about corn as a product of selective breeding?

A.It has genetic makeup opposite to teosinte.

B.It is the earliest plant developed by Mexicans.

C.It hasn't an ancestor in Mother Nature.

D.It shares few physical similarities with its ancestors.

【4】What might be discussed in the paragraphs following the last one?

    A.More examples of selective breeding.

    B.Disadvantages of selective breeding.

C.Influence of selective breeding on species.

D.Comparison between natural and selective breeding.

  • 24、   This is what's known as a 'Buddy' or Friendship Bench'. They're needed because playgrounds can be lonely places sometimes. And these benches can help pupils feeling lonely to find a friend. Benches like this have been around for a while now in many schools. But in Ireland, they are trying to do something a bit different with them.

This school in Cork in the south of Ireland is the 247th to get one from a social enterprise called Buddy Bench Ireland that doesn't just provide schools with benches, it also runs special workshops with trained child psychiatrists(精神病专家).They use the bench as an opportunity to start conversations about mental well-being. They talk about the importance of being aware of your feelings and those of others. The children need to understand what the bench is about, what it symbolizes--- friendship, inclusion, listening to each other and the most important thing, that it's important to express feelings.

But do children actually use the bench? It's something an independent academic study has been looking at. We found that 40% of the children told us that they had actually used the benches at the time of the study. And over 90% said that they would talk to a child if that child was sitting on the bench. So, certainly there doesn't appear to be any issues around stigma. Children's mental health at school is increasingly a concern in many countries. In Ireland, they're hoping these benches will not only tackle issues like social isolation and bullying but also give a future generation the confidence to open up about their feelings.

1Why the school in Cork in the south of Ireland uses the bench?

A.To start conversations about mental well-being.

B.To replace the old benches in school.

C.To cut the cost of school's facility.

D.To help children with psychological problems fully recover.

2What makes the bench work in Ireland schools?

A.Teachers and parents encourage children to try it.

B.Most children are willing to express feelings.

C.All the children understand what the bench is about.

D.The bench helps children get rid of loneliness.

3What do schools expect of the bench?

A.It will deal with social isolation and bullying completely.

B.It will motivate a future generation to bravely convey their feelings.

C.It will make children prefer the bench to old one.

D.It will spread in most schools in Ireland soon.
