21、 Exercise could not only benefit your body, but also imp rove your memory, researchers found recently. In their paper published on Monday, researchers from the University of California ,Irvine in the United States and the University of Tsukuba in Japan introduced their experiment and conclusion.
Scientists invited 36 volunteers who were in their early 20s to do 10 minutes of light exercise before taking a memory test in which they were shown pictures like broccoli(西兰花)or picnic baskets and asked to recall them later. The same experiment was repeated with the same group of volunteers without exercising. "The memory task was really quite challenging ,said Michael Yassa, co-author of the study and a neuroscientist (神经科学家)at the
University of California, Irvine. "We used very tricky similar items to see if they would remember whether it was this exact picnic basket versus (对抗)that picnic basket. "
Researchers also scanned brains of some of the participants during the experiment. They found strengthened communication between regions involved in the storage and recollection of memories in brains of those who had exercised. This suggested that just 10 minutes of light exercise like walking, yoga or Tai Chi might increase memory power.
As all the volunteers in the experiment were relatively young, researchers are still working to look at the effects of light exercise on older people. " Our future goal is to try to develop an exercise prescription (处方)that can be used by older adults who might have disabilities or mobility impairments, but can still adopt very simple exercise rules of life and be able to, perhaps, delay cognitive decline temporarily," said Yassa.
【1】What did the researchers find from the experiment mentioned in the text?

A. The lime to solve the questions was too limited.
B. The questions asked by the scientists were loo comp Heated.
C. The items to be distinguished were extremely similar.
D. The people in the experiment were disabled.

A. To solve a problem.
B. To give practical advice.

22、 Copenhagen, voted as the "Best City for Cyclists" and "World's Most Livable City", has a profound bicycle culture, one that is rooted in almost every Copenhagener's daily life.
For Copenhageners, bicycles are one of the best means of transportation. They are convenient, fast and environmentally friendly. Every morning, when I head to school, I can see a great many cyclists from all age groups riding their well-equipped and beautifully designed bicycles to school or work. What is most unbelievable for me is that even those aged 70 or 80 still prefer biking as their main mode of transportation.
The Danes' passion for bicycles is similar to the Chinese craze for ping-pong or Brazilians' love of football; many great cyclists arise in Denmark who have already achieved great success in the international sporting arena. One example is Larsen Norman Hansen, a Danish professional road and track racing cyclist, who won one gold medal and two silver medals in big events. In addition, bikes are also huge part of the recreational life of many young Danes. One of my Danish friends, Laurits Genz, a 21-year-old Chinese studies student from Copenhagen University, has a hobby of rebuilding old bicycles. He has collected many old bikes from a recycling station near his home and completely restored them, giving them new parts and a fresh coat of paint. He believes that eventually, all of these bikes with that "classic" look are going to be very sought after and valuable.
Some people might wonder why bike-related culture is so universal and popular in Copenhagen, but not as much so in other parts of the world. I would name a couple of reasons: First of all, the infrastructure constructed in Copenhagen is very cyclist friendly. On many roads in Copenhagen, if cyclists can ride their bikes at the speed of 20 kph and remain stable, they can surf through on a wave of green traffic lights through the city without putting a foot down. It's absolutely a great environment. Another factor is the government's friendliness to cyclists. Because of this government policy, bikers enjoy a sort of encouraged state of privilege(特权), meaning they will stick to this means of transportation even during the coldest winter season. Danes' tendency toward a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle also lends itself to choosing cycling.
【1】What makes the author feel most surprised according to Paragraph 2?
A.People aged 70 or 80 preferring biking.
B.The advantages represented by bicycles.
C.The passion for bicycles shown by Danes
D.Bike-related culture rooted in Danes' daily life.
【2】How many factors contribute to the popularity of riding bikes in Copenhagen?
A.1.
B.2.
C.3.
D.4
【3】What can we learn from the text?
A.Larsen Norman Hansen won three gold medals in big events.
B.Bicycles are the best means of transportation in Copenhagen.
C.Everyone in Denmark can rebuild old bicycles by themselves.
D.The government policy is in favor of this kind of transportation.
【4】What does the underlined phrase "sought after" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Fashionable.
B.Newly-designed.
C.Popular.
D.Well-equipped.
23、Greening the blue
Is there a “natural” way to enhance the potential of the oceans to lock away climate-warming CO2? Planting more trees on land can help draw down more CO2 from the atmosphere—the basis of many plans for carbon credits that companies buy to offset their emissions (抵消其排放). 【1】 Seaweed forests and saltmarshes (盐碱滩) are common examples.
Some regard the potential for this “blue carbon” as huge, although as yet there is no mechanism for integrating it into carbon offsetting plans. John Virdin of Duke University in North Carolina says, “【2】” He adds, “You have to go out and measure all the carbon that’s there, you have to show that it’s not going to be lost, you have to keep monitoring it.” Virdin and others have proposed extending an existing land-based plan called REDD + (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) to the ocean, but that is an idea whose ship has yet to sail.
【3】 In March, the UK government’s climate adviser, the Climate Change Committee, found that restoring and creating seagrass and saltmarsh ecosystems in the country would only lock away a small amount of CO2, removing “well below” 1 million tonnes a year. Nonetheless, these are efficient carbon stores according to the committee. 【4】
A.Using the oceans as a solution to climate change is hardly a new idea.
B.There is still some doubt about how big the marine offsetting effect might be.
C.It’s really hard to turn blue carbon conservation and restoration into carbon credits that you can sell.
D.Something similar might work in the oceans, by stimulating the growth of marine and coastal ecosystems.
E.And conserving them is important given how much fishing and other activities have degraded them.
F.The big objection to all these plans is the possibility of negative environmental side effects.
24、The first set of Chinese stories presented in English scripts (剧本), titled Stories of China: Performed in English, was officially published by Foreign Languages Press. Planned by the New Channel International Education Group with the participation of playwrights from China, the United Kingdom and the United States, the book provides a new way for young people to learn English while inheriting (传承) and spreading Chinese culture.
The book contains 20 English scripts in novel formats covering a wide range of subjects. Unlike the most common English scripts for young readers on the market which are based on adaptations of European and American stories, those presented in this book are unique for being based on classic Chinese stories, readapted and written in English. The book is divided into first to third grades in terms of grammar and vocabulary difficulty, making it suitable for young English learners from primary school to junior and high school.
All the scripts in the book are written by top playwrights with elegant, pure and vivid language. The scripts are provided with a summary of the story in both Chinese and English, so that readers can fully understand the plot as well as the history and culture behind it. Readers can not only improve their English skills through immersive (沉浸式) reading and performance but also appreciate Chinese culture.
Hu Min, English education expert and founder of the New Channel, said the combination of traditional culture and English teaching has become a trend, guiding young people to bring their own wisdom and deep cultural heritage to tell Chinese stories to the world. New Channel will offer special courses on Stories of China: Performed in English in its many schools across the country, and cooperate with primary and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai to offer English drama courses on a trial basis.
