21、 There are already computer vision systems and sensor-equipped gloves that can detect a person’s hand gestures. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have developed an alternative technology, however, that offers some key advantages.
Computer vision systems not only require the users to have their hand clearly visible at all times, but they also raise privacy concerns, particularly if the person's face is visible in the video. Electronic gloves, on the other hand may be clumsy to handle or use and not practical in all situations.
With these limitations in mind, a team of UC Berkeley researchers developed a computer chip-equipped thin-film armband that is wrapped around the user's forearm. That person starts out by performing a number of hand gestures, one at a time. As they do so, electrical sensors in the band detect nerve signals at 64 points within the arm. This data is used to train a custom artificial intelligence-based algorithm(算法) that learns which signal patterns accompany which gestures.
When the user makes one of those gestures later on-or even thinks about doing so-the system is able to determine which one it is, by matching its distinct nerve signal pattern up with one that it’s already learned. It is currently able to recognize 21 different gestures, including a fist, a thumbs-up, a flat hand, holding up individual fingers and counting off numbers.
Importantly, the algorithm automatically updates what it's been taught, so it can compensate for new variables such as sweat on the arm, or the arm being held in an unusual position. Additionally, all of the processing takes place within the chip, so no user data is sent to the cloud.
It is hoped that once developed further, the technology could be utilized in applications such as gesture control of electronic devices, virtual reality, or possibly even the operation of prosthetic(假体的)hands.
【1】What is the disadvantage of the computer vision system?
A.It is difficult to operate.
B.It may let out users’ data.
C.It is not practical to use.
D.It may be expensive to have.
【2】How is the armband working to detect users’ hand gestures?
A.By analyzing nerve signals.
B.By counting off numbers.
C.By tracking users’ habit.
D.By reading arms’ position.
【3】What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The system.
B.The nerve signal.

D.The signal pattern.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Researchers have found some faults on sensor equipment.
B.High-tech armband has replaced traditional sensor systems.
C.High-tech armband detects users’ hand gestures in a better way.
D.Researchers have found more applications for armband sensors.
22、 Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as first violinist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people. When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. “They have reminded me why I became a musician,” he said.
Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among the 25 winners of the 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the “genius grant.” Each winner will receive $625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金)to people whose work it considers exceptional and that “inspires hope in us all.” Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to homelessness.
Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor of sociology and law in the University of Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities in the U.S. justice system.
47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which states had the financial resources to provide such aid and which did not. She also found that the cost of legal services is only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others are fears about unfairness in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention has been paid to problems with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also affects millions of people.
【1】Why did Gupta win the award?
A.For his achievements in classical music.
B.For performing for large crowds.
C.For organizing a group playing for the homeless.
D.For the friendship with Nathaniel Ayers.
【2】What do we know about MacArthur Fellowship?
A.It is founded by the government.
B.It offers $625,000 to 25 winners in 2018.
C.It allows the winners to use the money freely.
D.It awards people who make great contributions to society.
【3】What was the extraordinary thing that Sandefur did?
A.She offered legal aids to the poor freely.
B.She made the legal system fairer.
C.She paid more attention to the criminal justice system.
D.She made it easier to get legal help for the poor.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Grants winners, inspiring the poor.
B.The city homeless, in need of help.
C.Vijay Gupta, an extraordinary violinist.
D.MacArthur Foundation, awarding exceptional work.
23、 What are the things that scare you: snakes, spiders or fierce tigers? Or maybe you have a fear of heights or visiting the dentist. Although some of us just get scared or a bit nervous about these things, for others it can cause an unreasonable reaction that can’t be controlled-something we call a phobia (恐惧症). 【1】
Sometimes it’s good to be aware of the possible dangers from things. Our brain warns us of the risks that might lie ahead, but then we often get prepared and overcome them. Clinical psychologist Warren Mansell told the BBC, “Our fears are rooted in our brains-we don’t need to learn to be afraid of animals like snakes or spiders.”【2】With a phobia, your breathing gets quicker, your pulse speeds up, you sweat and your brain is unable to control these reactions.
【3】 Speaking to the BBC, Lauren Rosenberg, a fear and phobia expert, says, “Phobias usually are a copy behaviour from a higher authority, like a parent or teacher, or a kind of mental suffering from a past event that comes back to trouble you continuously.”
There are many different complex phobias some people suffer from, such as agoraphobia-caused by being away from home, and iatrophobia-fear of doctors.【4】Therapy (心理治疗) is one choice, where you gradually get used to whatever it is you fear. Lauren Rosenburg says she likes to work with people to clear their bad memory and help them breathe. But if you do have a phobia, continually trying to avoid what you’re afraid of by yourself is likely to make the situation worse.【5】
A.Then how can they be overcome?
B.But where does a phobia come from?
C.But phobias are stronger than just fears.
D.The right thing to do is to find help to overcome it.
E.Overcoming a phobia can take patience, devotion and courage.
F.Are there any phobias that tend to be more common than others?
G.It occurs when someone develops an unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.
