21、 Every year a community in some part of the world is destroyed by flooding. Indeed, flooding can happen anywhere it rains. There is hope, however. Architects and civil engineers have developed promising technologies for flood control. And yes, engineering can be beautiful.
The Thames Barrier in England
The Thames Barrier is the second largest flood defence barrier in the world. Made of steel, water gates on the Thames Barrier are normally left open so ships can pass through. Then, as needed, the water gates shut to stop water flowing through and to keep the Thames River safe. The Thames Barrier has 10 steel gates. The main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes. The Thames Barrier gates were constructed between 1974 and 1984 and have been closed to prevent floods more than 100 times.
Red Sluice Gate in Japan
To protect areas on the coast and along Japan’s rapidly-flowing rivers, the nation’s engineers have developed a complex system of canals and flood-gate locks(水闸). Red Sluice Gate was designed in 1924 by a Japanese architect who also worked on the Panama Canal. It is powered by automated "water-drive" motors. Such motors don’t need electricity to run, so they aren’t affected by power failures that can occur during storms. It contributed greatly to preventing floods until 1982 when a new sluice gate was completed. The Red Sluice Gate was no longer used but remains an impressive sight.
The Hagestein Weir in the Netherlands
Completed in about 1960, the Hagestein Weir is one of three movable dams, along the Rhine River in the Netherlands. The Hagestein Weir has two enormous arched gates to control water and generate power. Spanning 54 meters, the gates are stored in the up position. Dams and water barriers like Hagestein Weir have become models for water control engineers around the world.
MOSE in Venice
With its famous canals, Venice, Italy is a well-known watery city. Global warming threatens its very existence. Since the 1980s, officials have been pouring money into the MOSE project, a series of 78 barriers that can rise collectively or independently across the lagoon opening and curtail the rising waters of the Adriatic Sea.

22、Before audio (音频) playlists and before tape recorders, there were wax cylinders (蜡筒) — the earliest, mass-produced way people could both listen to commercial music and record themselves. In the 1890s, it was a great breakthrough. People slid blank cylinders onto their Edison Phonographs and recorded what was happening in their life.
Such wax cylinders were kept in the New York Public Library and it’s possible to discover things that haven’t been heard since they were recorded. They haven’t been heard because the wax is so easy to break. The earliest, putty-colored cylinders deteriorate (变坏) after only a few dozen listens if played on the Edison Phonographs; they break if you hold them too long in your hand. And because the wax tubes themselves were unlabeled, many of them remain mysteries.
One of those important collections owned by the library is the “Mapleson Cylinders”, a collection recorded by Lionel Mapleson, the Metropolitan Opera’s librarian at the turn of the last century. Mapleson recorded performances — it’s the only way listeners can hear pre-World War I opera singers with a full orchestra. Bob Kosovsky, a librarian in the audio division of the New York Public Library, said the Mapleson Cylinders “represent the first live recordings in recorded history”.
Californian Nicholas Bergh, invented a machine called Dictabelt, which recently was acquired by the library. Thanks to the combination of its laser and needle, it can digitize even broken wax cylinders — and there are a lot of those.
It will take the library a couple of years to digitize all its cylinders. But when they’re through, listeners all over the country should be able to access them from their home computers, opening a window to what people sounded like and thought about over 100 years ago.

23、 A new study looks at how pets provide important support through petting, cuddles(拥抱), and a frequent physical presence. This is especially key when people feel lonely.
The researchers interviewed 32 people aged 59 to 83 years old. Pets included dogs, cats, birds, etc. More than 90%of the people spoke about touch in the relationship with their pets. "Participants often described touch-based interactions with their pets as being comforting or relaxing in a way that contributed to their overall wellbeing," the researchers say. "For our participants, comfort is the sense of being somehow cared for by another being. "
Many people in the study spoke about how their pets just seemed to "know" when they weren't feeling well and they'd move to get physically near them. Different pets were better at providing comfort, some participants insisted. Many said cats were more relaxing companions than dogs, while others said dogs could be relaxing as long as they were "the right kind of dog". But almost all pets provided some sort of comfort to their owners when it came to touch.
Janette Young, lecturer in health sciences at the University of South Australia, and her team uncovered an interesting thing about the pet-human relationship. People in the study often spoke about how their animals demanded to be petted or seemed to take joy in the interaction. This, in turn, made the humans feel good.
The researchers suggest that pets can be "helpful in reducing touch deprivation(匮乏)" and the benefits can come from all kinds of pets. This connection can be particularly important in health care and senior care settings where patients and workers are less likely to be able to see friends and family; yet touch is important and can improve health and happiness.
Pets can also offer benefits that in some cases people can't offer. "Relationships with pets are different to those with humans," Young says. "Animals don't judge and are always with us. "
【1】About what did some participants hold different opinions?
A.What pets were better at providing comfort.
B.Whether pets could make them feel relaxed.
C.How they felt when their pets touched them.

A.It is full of judgments. B.It turns out temporary.
C.It benefits both parties. D.It is determined by pets.
【3】What may researchers suggest hospitals do?
A.Encourage pet connection programs.
B.Raise pets to reduce human touch.
C.Select out the best pet companions.
D.Order workers' friends to pay visits.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Humans need spiritual support.
B.Pet-human interactions are common.
C.Lonely people like living with pets.
D.Pets offer humans touch-based comfort.
24、 Peking Opera is being introduced to primary and middle school students in an effort to promote the traditional art to the younger generation.
The country's first set of textbooks about Peking Opera was compiled and published by the Beijing Association of Promoting Quintessence of Chinese Culture and People's Education Press in 2015.
The textbooks for optional courses have been put on trial use in middle schools in Fengtai district and will be used in middle schools across the city. The textbooks for primary schools will also be rolled_out.
Since 2008, Beijing has promoted a program to provide opera training at dozens of primary schools. Schools apply for funds from the city's education department to hire professional actors and actresses to work with students as young as 6 or 7.
Peking Opera arose during the rule of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). It flourished for decades in China and as its fame spread, it drew audiences in other countries, including the United States and Japan.
