二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Taylor grew up on the coast of New South Wales, Australia and swimming in the ocean was part of everyday life. She began spear fishing and worked her way up in her early 20s to become one of very few women who were professional spear fishers and was named the Australian Ladies National Champion.

However, as she spent more time underwater, especially with the sharks, she had a change of heart. “I learned straight away that sharks are nowhere near as dangerous as the media would have us believe. And I learned that they all have different personalities—there’s the shy guy, the cross guy, and the aggressive guy; they’re all different.” From that point on, she decided, along with her late husband and world spear fishing champion, Ron Taylor, to hang up her spear and to only shoot them with her camera.

As a pioneering shark conservationist, Taylor succeeded in many firsts throughout her life’s work. She was the first person to dive with sharks cageless. The first person to test the power of a shark bite; she hand-fed a Great White and petted it. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do to help correct the false image that sharks are dangerous, man-eating beasts. Her research has become the basis for much of what we know about sharks today and she succeeded in becoming the first person to get Grey Nurse sharks protected in a specific area, the first shark species in the world to receive protected status.

When asked about what could be done to help save the sharks, and the oceans, Taylor said she was quite pessimistic about the whole thing. “Change has to come from the government level.” But she also recommended, “The thing that works the best is to get a good story and then get it on camera. Then go on television and speak to the public. Say it to the mothers, ‘Wouldn’t you like your child... when they’re old enough, to be able to see this wonderful, friendly shark?’”

【1】What sort of girl was Taylor in her early 20s?

    A.Far-seeing.

    B.Demanding.

    C.Accomplished.

    D.Environmentally-aware.

    A.Her desire to be rich.

    B.Her understanding of sharks.

    C.Her ambition for becoming rich.

    D.Her marriage with Ron.

【3】Why are Taylor’s firsts mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.To prove her great influence on shark conservation.

B.To urge the protection of sea animals.

C.To present her achievements as a female fisher pioneer.

D.To show her efforts to correct people’s false impression on sharks.

【4】What does Taylor think is a better way to protect sharks?

    A.Raising public awareness.

    B.Turning to experts for advice.

    C.Inventing stories about sharks.

    D.Relying on the government only.

  • 23、   Despite the common appearing of tablet computers and e-readers, we simply cannot break our addiction to paper. An estimated four billion trees are cut down every year to make paper or cardboard, an energy-consuming process with a vast environmental footprint. Now chemist Yadong Yin of the University of California, Riverside, and his colleagues have developed “rewritable” paper that could help control that impact.

Printed rewritable paper is made using Prussian blue nanoparticles (纳米粒子). The researchers coated conventional paper with nanoparticles of two chemicals: Prussian blue that gives blueprints their characteristic color, and titanium dioxide (二氧化钛), a substance used in sunscreens.

UV light makes the titanium dioxide nanoparticles donate electrons (电子) to their Prussian blue neighbors, shifting its color from midnight blue to milky white.

By shining that UV light through a transparent (透明的) screen marked with black text, the researchers “printed” blue text on a white background. The text lasts about five days and then naturally fades away: “Every morning I could just push a button, and a printer would give me a fresh newspaper to read over breakfast,” Yin says.

The paper can also be reset by heating and reused more than 80 times, a significant improvement over previous types of rewritable paper. “The key advantages are high reusability and stability, easy handling and low cost,” says Sean X. Zhang, a materials scientist at Jilin University in China, who was not involved in the study but has also worked on developing rewritable paper. By comparison, technologies such as electronic ink—used for Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite—involve moving charged black-and-white particles around, which requires electronics.

Since reporting their invention in Nano Letters early this year, the scientists have used a digital projector to replace their transparent screen. They are now working on increasing the number of times the paper can be reused. Zhang says a key difficulty will be persuading companies to develop the unconventional UV control needed for widespread use. Even though commercialization could be a few years away, Yin says, “We’ve had a lot of discussions with industry investors.”

【1】What does the underlined “that impact” in the first paragraph refer to?

    A.Human beings’ addiction to paper.

    B.Common appearance of e-readers.

    C.Green and sustainable environment.

    D.A vast environmental footprint.

【2】What are paragraphs 2-4 mainly about?

A.Working principles of the new invention.

    B.Comparison between different papers.

C.Key benefits of the new invention.

    D.The function of UV light.

【3】Sean X. Zhang probably agrees that the invention is_______________.

    A.expensive

    B.unreliable

    C.conventional

    D.eco-friendly

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

    A.Print, wipe, rewrite

    B.The nanotech commercialized

    C.The history of paper

    D.Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • 24、   You may want to bring honey the next time you have a cold, a study says. That's because honey has been shown to provide better cough relief than some over-the-counter drugs, Oxford University researchers said in findings published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

“Honey is more effective than usual care choices for improving upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, particularly reducing cough frequency and cough severity,” the scientists said in the findings.

Researchers said they reviewed 14 past studies about upper respiratory tract infections, also known as common colds. Symptoms can include runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and coughing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

Four of the studies examined comparisons between honey and diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that can be used to relieve coughs, according to the U. S. government. It's sold at U. S. drugstores under several brand names and is combined with other ingredientsin some cold medicines.

In their findings, Oxford scientists said honey was “significantly better than” diphenhydramine at improving cough symptoms. The results came from studies that included 385 participants, data show. But honey was “not significantly better” at cough relief when compared to another class of medicines, called dextromethorphan, according to a review of two studies with a combined 137 patients. Dextromethorphan is used to suppress coughs.

Anyone sick with a cold should talk to a druggist or doctor about the best medicines for them, according to health officials. “Over-the-counter medicines may provide temporary relief of symptoms, but they will no cure your illness,” the CDC said on its website.

The CDC includes honey on its list of possible ways to suppress coughs. Other tips for feeling better from a cold include getting enough rest, breathing in steam and using saline spray, according to the CDC.

【1】What's the author's purpose in writing this text?

A.To prove honey's effectiveness in relieving cough.

B.To inform the readers how to better prevent colds.

C.To make a comparison between honey and medicines.

D.To give a description of symptoms of common colds.

【2】What does the underlined word “diphenhydramine” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.A cold symptom.

    B.A sort of sweet food.

    C.A kind of cold medicine.

    D.A brand name of medicine.

【3】What can we infer from CDC's advice?

A.Honey is a safer choice for relief of cold symptoms.

B.Breathing in steam is a better way to suppress coughs.

C.Honey doesn't work for all the patients with a cold.

D.Over-the-counter medicines are a waste of money.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A history book.

    B.An academic magazine.
