二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、(题文)The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named "DriveLAB" in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.

Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive.

Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.

These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: "For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others."

"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."

Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: "The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.

"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that. "

"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.

What is the best title for the text?

    A. A new Model Electric Car

    B. A Solution to Traffic Problems

    C. Driving Services for Elders

    D. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road

  • 22、Winemaker Justin Jarrett remembers when the grape harvest used to start. He and his wife Pip, used to take their kids on an annual beach holiday in February. When they returned to their vineyards (葡萄园) in the regional New South Wales city of Orange, Australia, in early autumn, they’d start the harvest. Today, harvest starts six weeks earlier in January.

“What we did 20 years ago can’t work today, ”Jarrett says. “You have to adjust. ”

Scientists used to have big debates about how to talk to farmers about climate change, says Snow Barlow, a professor specialising in viticulture at the University of Melboume. But recently there’s been a sea change. “Farmers are now saying. This is serious and we want to get on with doing things, ” he says.

“Wine is a classical industry that has been very influenced by climate, ” Barlow says. “You grow grapes in particular areas because you think it’s the ideal place to grow a particular grape to create the perfect wine. ”

Rising temperatures are not just affecting harvest times, but also the types of grapes that grow well in particular areas. Major labels, such as Brown Brothers, have moved some of their operations to the southern state of Tasmania where there are cooler sites for varieties such as chardonnay and pinot noir. Others are changing their varietal mix, introducing grapes from southern Italy, Sicily and Greece that are more heat- tolerant.

The Jarretts have spent years adapting their winemaking business for a warmer world. They’ve invested in infrastructure, help them manage the compressed (缩短的) harvest time, and introduced more sustainable soil and pest (害虫) management practices.

Jarrett is growing their grape varieties at higher elevations (海拔高度) than he used to. Sauvignon blanc, for instance, which he used to grow at 700m, has been moved up to 900m. He thinks he can keep moving his operations up to about 1100m before he has to buy more land.

“We have to have a 20-year plan. If we’re going to move a variety or change something, we have to have at least 20 years of success to make it worthwhile,” Jarrett says. “We are really looking at varieties that are now considered hot climate. ”

【1】What do the Jarretts have to adjust to?

    A.Their holiday plan.

    B.Their neighborhood.

    C.The identity as winemakers.

    D.The earlier grape harvest.

【2】What can we learn from Snow Barlow’s words?

A.Scientists were divided over climate change.

B.Warm climate has caused a change in the sea.

C.Wine industry is particular about grape suppliers.

D.Farmers are aware of the gravity of climate change.

【3】How are the Jaretts coping with the impact on their winemaking?

A.By putting off the harvest time.

    B.By introducing heat- tolerant grapes.

C.By planting grapes at higher elevations.

D.By moving their operations to a new land.

【4】What is Jarett’s opinion of the alternative approaches to the challenge?

    A.Great minds think alike.

B.It is rewarding to try new things.

C.It is better to play safe than take risks.

    D.One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

  • 23、   Has the volume in a restaurant ever made you finish your meal early? If so, you're not alone. Restaurants handle diners in various ways to influence food choices and consumption, from lighting to menu to server presentation. Unfortunately for those headache-prone restaurant goers, some places also choose to turn up the tunes and the background noise.

Chef Mario Batali is often blamed for the phenomenon of very loud or noisy restaurants in the 1990s, when he decided to flood the dining room with the same loud tunes he was playing in his kitchen. And other chefs followed suit. Some restaurateurs felt a "livelier" atmosphere encouraged more customers, but a side "benefit" was quicker table turnover, thus increasing the number of people who could dine in a specific evening.

A 1985 study out of Fairfield University looked at how chewing speed varied according to the type of music being played. Although the volume level was kept the same for both musical situations, it's important to note that fast-tempo (节奏) music often gives the impression of being louder than slower music.

"A significant increase in the number of bites per minute was found, and the effect was largest for fast music," the researchers wrote in the study. So, the faster, louder music gets people to down their food more quickly, relieving the table for future customers.

There re opinions about whether or not this is a sound practice. "A restaurant that places profit above dining experience often plays loud music with a fast tempo that puts diners under pressure 10 eat more quickly, even if that means they're less able to enjoy their meal," writes Dr. Neel Burton in Psychology Today, adding that loud, fast music reduces appetite.

What's more, some would-be repeat diners will shy away for fear of another very loud meal. The non-profit group Action on Hearing Loss found in a 2016 survey of nearly 1,500 people that 91% of those who view a restaurant as too noisy would choose not to return.

1Why did some bosses of the restaurants favour loud music?

A.It might help attract more customers.

B.It was the favorite kind of music of them.

C.It made the restaurants softer and sweeter.

D.It could increase the popularity of their restaurants.

2What plays the most important role in the effect of music on diners according to the passage?

    A.Its content. B.Its length.

    C.Its speed. D.Its quality.

3What is Dr. Neel Burton's attitude towards flooding restaurants with noisy music?

    A.Doubtful. B.Disapproving.

    C.Positive. D.Objective.

4What could be a suitable tile for the text?

A.What People Think of Loud Restaurants

B.Are Customers Made to Eat Quickly?

C.Why Loud Restaurants Are Popular Today

D.Does Loud Music Really Benefit Restaurants?

  • 24、On a holiday back home, my wife and I turned right, then right again, following the GPS navigation (导航) system, and found ourselves in a small Cretan town. I spoke to the GPS: “We don’t want to be here; we want the highway.” It instructed me to turn right once more. With every turn, the street narrowed. It was like being in a magical shrinking room. We drew the side mirrors back. We took another turn. The new road was even narrower, the walls so close you feel hard to hold your breath.

Another car appeared, coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver gestured, telling me I’ll have to make way. But how? I didn’t have the nerve to back up along the impossibly narrow road. Locals appeared. Soon there was a whole group, using sign language to suggest a solution. There was a narrow garage opening to one side. If I could squeeze the car forward into the garage, I could then, through a series of tiny adjustments, back into the side street, allowing the other car to pass.

More locals arrived, standing on various sides of the vehicle, helpfully indicating that I have a centimetre to spare here, a millimetre there. There were brick walls on all 17 sides of the car. There was zero chance that I won’t damage the vehicle. This was significant since, a day earlier, at the Europcar counter, I had refused the additional insurance.

One lady stood at the rear of the vehicle, waving me on. She was making strong “this way, this way” movements with her arms. In an act of blind trust, I followed her instructions, creeping backwards and forwards. Remarkably it worked. I completed my 27-point turn into the side street, with no damage to the vehicle. The other car passed. The driver gave me a grateful wave. The locals applauded happily “Hero! Hero!” I followed her lead, down the narrow lane and—finally—back onto the highway. Free of the town, I clearly knew that I encountered heroes.

A.His GPS navigation system broke down.

B.He had something wrong with directions.

C.He lost the whole control of his car.

D.He accidentally turned into a narrow road.

【2】Which of the following can best describe the locals?

    A.Energetic and brave.

    B.Confident and creative.

    C.Friendly and helpful.

    D.Ambitious and thoughtful.

【3】Why did the author fear to hurt his car?

    A.Because he borrowed it.

    B.Because he rented it.

C.Because he was ashamed of losing face.

D.Because he hadn’t got the required insurance.

【4】What do we know about the author from the last paragraph?

A.He was questioned by the locals.

B.He knew the local women very well.

C.He was greatly grateful to the locals.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A new study suggests many Americans have not visited the most popular places of interest around the country or even in their hometown.

The study found that 25 percent of Americans have yet to visit "iconic landmarks" in their own cities. Twenty-three percent said they had not visited any of the nation’s natural wonders, famous buildings or historic battlefields.

The study was a project of the research service OnePoll and Zipcar, a car-sharing company.

Researchers questioned 2,000 Americans. Only 33 percent of them said they had been to Niagara Falls and just 28 percent had been to Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The study showed that only 30 percent had been to New York’s Empire State Building. Only 22 percent had ever visited the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Many Americans say they would like to travel more. More than half of those questioned said they would like to get out more. Forty-nine percent reported being "creatures of habit." By that, they mean they generally do the same things in the same way. That would leave little time to visit local or national landmarks.

The researchers found that the main reasons keeping Americans from exploring their cities or the country were money, lack of time and a lack of good transportation.

On social media, one Twitter user reacting to the study named a few reasons for not visiting famous places. The writer noted that “most of us don’t get paid days off, get punished for taking a day off, or simply can’t afford to visit anything or go anywhere anymore."

The Twitter user added, "Childcare costs more than College, College Loans costs more than a mortgage payment, and jobs don’t even pay for one of those things.”

The study found that three of the places Americans wanted to visit were Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty.

The researchers also found that, on average, Americans go to a new coffee shop every five months, and a new restaurant every four months. They also spent time at a lake or near the ocean once every six months, and go to a park every five months.
