21、 How did we get the alphabet? It was a long process, covering thousands of years.
The first people to write things down carved symbols onto rocks or shells. These symbols represented people or things.
These people who lived a long time ago had simple lives with simple needs. One of the most basic needs was food. Before the introduction of agriculture, people were called HunterGatherers because they hunted animals and gathered nuts and berries for food. To tell each other about how to hunt animals or where to find them, these people drew on cave walls or on animal hides. Soon, people were growing their own crops. They were also using a system of symbols to stand for people, places and things. The best ancient example of this was found in Egypt, where hieroglyphs (象形字) were used. These people believed in many different gods. Each god had its own symbol. Symbols were also used to stand for water, buildings, food, and other parts of life.
But these picture drawings and hieroglyphs represented whole words, not just sounds. How did we get an alphabet? Recent research suggests that the idea of an alphabet was first used in Egypt about 1900 BC. Civilizations that traded with or fought against Egypt were exposed to this alphabet, and the idea spread.
The ancient Greeks adapted this alphabet and created their own. The ancient Romans polished it up to a state almost like our modern alphabet. The idea of stringing letters together to make words was born. You can see by looking at letters from the Roman alphabet that these letters survive almost unchanged in our modern English alphabet.
This was the case in the Western world. Actually, a similar thing also happened in the East. You can see many examples in such areas’ language development.

22、What’s wrong with being an amateur? While reading a recently published report saying “many people who attend plays are themselves involved in a form of amateur drama”, August Schulenburg of the Flux Theatre Ensemble questioned the divide between amateurs and professional artists.
One reason for the barrier, he suggests, is fear. “When professional arts organizations perceive their value under threat, they must draw rigid lines to protect it. Amateurs are pushed aside out of fear that they will somehow endanger the professional brands.”
But for Schulenburg, it’s an outmoded attitude towards amateurs. “The professional artist must be among them and of them; the amateur must be an equal partner at the table.” It sounds a lot like he is advocating the kind of large-scale community work. If so, he might have a point.
The importance of forming a community rather than a passive audience is something Douglas MacLennan also picked up on recently over a blog. In a post headlined “Pay attention! If selling tickets is your business model, you’ve got a problem”, he argues that theatres and other arts institutions will only survive if they “build community rather than audience”. The idea is that you give the public reasons to engage with your company, you build loyalty so that their support is more than just a consumer transaction (交易). Abigail Katz, a regular theater-goer, wonders whether theatres offer good value for money. She has written recently in a post at the Playgoer blog that much of the theatre “doesn’t do anything … doesn’t make me feel anything”.
Lynn Conner, one author of the report, also mentioned “I believe what today’s potential arts audiences most want out of an arts event is the opportunity to co-author meaning. They don’t want the arts; they want the experience. They want to gain the cultural rights by forming and exchanging opinions that are valued in the community.”

B.amateurs; professional arts organizations

【3】In paragraph 4, the words of Abigail Katz are cited __________.
A.to highlight the necessity of surveying customers’ feelings
B.to emphasize the importance of advertising through blogs

24、Images of polar bears struggling to stay on rafts of ice are often used by groups that want to promote conservation and stop the deterioration of natural habitats. However, part of the solution lies with the polar bears themselves.
Polar bears are highly specialized. This means they have adapted to survive in a specific region and eat specific food. Polar bears live above the Arctic Circle and eat fish. Their bodies are different from those of other types of bears. Polar bears feature webbed feet for swimming, thicker fur and more body fat for living and swimming in icy conditions, and light-colored fur to help them blend into their environment. As a result, polar bears do not do well when they are in a non-arctic region. They cannot run as well as other bears, they can become too hot and tired easily, and they have a hard time hunting animals that are not in the snow or ice.
Unfortunately for polar bears, climate change is reducing the size of the areas where they can live. This means the bears will eventually have to leave the arctic regions and travel farther south. However, because they are so specialized, it is unlikely that polar bears will be as strong as they once were.
Other creatures, such as crocodiles, are not nearly as specialized. They live on almost every continent and in a wide variety of climates. In fact, crocodiles are one of the most adaptable animals on the planet and have survived for millions of years. When animals specialize, they often do better than less-specialized species in the same place, but if the climate or other conditions change, the specialized animals are usually the first to die off.
If polar bears are going to survive the next 100 years, they will have to adapt. Many scientists believe that polar bears may eventually cross paths with brown bears and black bears. Whether these animals fight it out or fall in love to create new generations of bears remains to be seen. No matter how it happens, many hope the polar bears will live far into the future-in many different places.
【1】Which of the following is an effect of polar bear specialization?
