二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Cool Butterfly Effect: Insect Equipment Could Inspire Heat-Radiating Tech

Devising better cooling materials has become a pressing issue as the climate warms, and some scientists are turning to nature for ideas. Small creatures with low body mass, such as insects, have to deal with the fact that they warm up much faster than large mammals. When butterflies land on tree branches in the sun, for example, their relatively large wings can overheat within seconds.

1 Researchers have now uncovered these colorful insects' built-in cooling mechanisms.

Heat is generated by the vibration of molecules. The more molecules a material can expose on its surface, the more heat it can release in a process called radiative cooling. Those made of folded layers shaped like waves, for example, cool off much faster than solid objects because they have more exposed surface area. 2 The wings themselves are complex systems that contain both living and nonliving structures, covered by various types of scales made of chitin—a rigid substance that is also found in some fungi(真菌). The researchers found that the scales covering these structures have different shapes that radiate heat in different ways. 3

The scientists' work is 'remarkable', says Aaswath Raman, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. '4 Butterfly wings are extremely light, and the microstructures involved are extremely small and thin. So this discovery can inspire ways of getting rid of heat in very lightweight systems. '

5 It might work in a variety of colors. Many conventional buildings tend to be white because that it does not absorb heat. But painting too many things white does not look pleasing, says Qiaoqiang Gan, a photonics scientist. 'We still need a colorful world, ' Gan says, noting how vivid butterflies are in nature. 'Butterfly wings give us an example that colorful structures can also result in cooling. '

A.So they have evolved sophisticated ways to cool themselves.

B.We can make these microstructures into our own artificial processes.

C.It turns out that parts of butterflies' wings exploit a similar principle.

D.To decipher how these complex systems work, the team studied several types of butterflies

E.Such structures release warmth very efficiently, protecting the organs from overheating.

F.Along with its light weight, a butterfly-inspired cooling material might have another advantage.

G.Although far from a commercial application, such resulting material could eventually be used for purposes such as painting buildings.

  • 22、   Most children look forward to learning to read, a process whereby they learn to transform what are essentially abstract handwriting on a page into meaningful letters, then sounds, then words, and then entire sentences and paragraphs. Reading represents a code (密码): specifically, an alphabetic code. A great number of children are able to break the code after a year of instruction. For at least one in five children, however, the experience is very different.

For them, reading, which seems to come effortlessly for others, appears to be beyond their grasp. These children, who understand the spoken word and love to listen to stories, struggle to understand the same words when they are written on a page. They read slowly and uncertainly, and words that they read correctly in one sentence may be misread in a following sentence. Reading aloud may be particularly painful. Eventually they grow frustrated and disappointed.

In the classroom, reading is king; it is essential for academic success. Teachers, witnessing the gap between good and poor readers widening, may wonder what they or these children might be doing wrong. Parents, knowing that reading problems have consequences all across development including into adult life, question themselves, feeling alternately guilty and angry.

The worst thing parents can do if they suspect that their child has a reading problem is to do nothing, says neuroscientist (神经科学家) Dr. Sally Shaywitz. Thus, if you observe the signs, start by speaking to your child’s teacher. Shaywitz offers some tips that will help parents make the most of their meeting with the teacher:

Before setting up a meeting, it often helps to list your observations and your concerns. Parents are often so nervous when speaking to their child’s teacher that they forget why they were worried. The teacher will appreciate having such a list as well.

Set up a specific time to speak to your child’s teacher; don’t catch her on the run.

Find out how your child is progressing in reading, ask for specifics. Confirm exactly how their reading progress is being measured.

Ask what reading group your child is in and what level that reader group represents, and how they compare to others in their class and in their grade.

Ask what the teacher predicts for your child’s progress by the end of the school year.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.Reading an alphabetic code is hard.

B.Most children like to read abstract letters.

C.Some children have difficulties in reading.

D.Few children can understand the code after a year of instruction.

【2】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Reading is not as easy for some children as it is for others.

B.All the children can understand spoken and written language.

C.Although children with reading difficulty read slowly, they read correctly.

D.The children become frustrated and unhappy because they will have to read aloud.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 focus on?

A.The correct way to deal with children’s reading difficulties.

B.The importance of observing child’s behavior.

    C.Dr. Sally Shaywitz — a famous neuroscientist.

D.The worst thing parents can do when it comes to their child’s reading problems.

【4】The underlined part “don’t catch her on the run” probably means “________”.

    A.don’t run after her

B.don’t talk to her while running

C.don’t speak to her while she is busy

D.don’t catch her as she runs away

【5】If parents want to meet with their child’s teacher, they should ________.

A.arrange the meeting at the end of the school year

B.ask about their child’s reading status at school

C.ask the teacher to take measures to improve their child’s reading ability

D.make a list of questions after the meeting

  • 23、   A retired postman from Turkey and a beautiful white swan have been inseparable for nearly four decades, and the story of their amazing friendship has melted the hearts of millions.

When Recep Mirzan spotted a wounded swan in a field in Turkey’s Edirne province, in 1984, he had no idea that he was about to meet his best friend. He was in a car with a group of friends, when he spotted a swan that appeared to have a broken wing in an empty field. Mirzan quickly realized that leaving the bird there was the same as signing its death sentence, as predators (捕食者) would have most likely eaten it, so he stopped the car and took the bird with him. He took it home and started nursing it back to health.

“Since I love animals, I took her home instead of leaving her as food to foxes,’’ Mirzan told The Associated Press. We got used to each other. We never separated. Even after the female swan's broken wing healed, it didn’t try to fly away. Instead, it befriended the other animals on Recep’s farm in the Karaagac region, and decided to stick around. Recep named her Garip, and she has been with him for the last 37 years.

“She comes when I call. Since 1984, she has never left me, not even during the river floods,” the retired postman told Anadolu News Agency. “She used to be more vigorous, but she has grown old now. If she dies, I will make her a nice grave here, but I hope we live more together.”

Garip has her own coop on Mirzan’s farm, but she mostly spends nights in it. During the day, she is busy following her human friend around, either during his daily chores, or on his evening walks.

After his wife died a few years ago, Recep Mirzan started spending more time with his animals, and since he has no human children, he regards Garip as his child.

Whooper swans can live for decades in protected environments, but Garip has long surpassed the average lifespan for her species.

【1】Why did Recep save the swan according to the passage?

    A.He felt extremely lonely.

B.The swan was a rare animal.

C.He was a real animal lover.

D.The swan was being followed by foxes.

【2】It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

A.the swan stayed with Recep at night after the death of his wife

B.Garip lived a longer life probably because of the care of Recep

C.Recep’s friends directly signed the wounded swan death sentence

D.Recep was sure to meet a lifelong friend when he spotted the wounded swan

【3】What might be the best title for the text?

A.A Retired Postman’s Story Has Melted the Hearts of Millions

B.Man and Swan Have Been Best Friends for the Last 37 Years

C.A Wounded Swan Has Befriended the Other Animals on a Farm

D.Humans Have Made Efforts to Protect the Environments for Swans

  • 24、   It may not come as a surprise but the world as a whole is getting richer. Some people have more disposable(可自由支配的)income to spend on luxuries such as holidays, cars, TVs and smart phones. Recent data has shown that the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved in recent decades. So should we celebrate the fact that more of us now have a better standard of living?

Maybe not. While the gap between the rich and the poor in some countries is narrowing, there is still a lot of inequality in other places-some people have a lot of money and opportunities and others don't. A recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse revealed how divided many of us are when it comes to wealth. A lot of the money in the world is in the hands of very few people. In fact, 48% of global wealth is owned by the richest l% of the population.

But some countries are attempting to reduce this inequality and make the poor, less poor. According to David Bryer from Oxfam, Brazil has been taking "some really sensible measures--measures around having more progressive tax, around investing in a higher minimum wage and investing in central public services." Having a higher minimum wage can help people eat better and seek a better education. And more people with more money buy more things-and factories can produce more. In turn, a factory which produces more will need more workers. So, more jobs are created.

Other wealthy individuals are doing their bit to help reduce inequality. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, earned a lot of money from his company but when he retired, he and his wife Melinda, created a foundation to help the poor. He thinks that rich people should, of course, pay their taxes but he also advises that they should all "look at taking their wealth and being philanthropic (乐善好施的 ) , both in their own country and to help the global poorest."

Bill Gates feels that giving money to help poor people is "fulfilling". But if other super-rich people don't want to experience this fulfillment then, according to Oxfam, very soon the wealthiest l% will soon own more money than the rest of the world's population. Do you think that is fair?

1The first two paragraphs mainly tell us _________.

A.the poverty and inequality in a richer world

B.some sensible measures to make the 'poor less poor

C.the increase of global wealth in recent decades

D.the narrowing gap between the rich and the poor

2What is the government in Brazil doing to the minimum wage?

    A.Limiting it. B.Increasing it.

C.Making it lower. D.Setting it free.

3What do Bill and Melinda Gates think very rich people should do with some of their money?

A.Spend it on their luxuries. B.Give it to help the poor.

C.Invest it in their business. D.Hand it over to their children.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Life is Good Clothing is a 100 million-dollar company run by brothers Bert and John Jacobs. Like any other businessmen, they went through a lot of failures. However, the idea

“Life is good” from their mother kept them going and inspired them to build a clothing company that is now very successful.

In 1988, Bert and Jacobs took a seven-week road trip from California to Boston. The brothers said this trip changed their lives forever as they looked back on their childhood. According to the Jacobs, their childhood was perfectly-imperfect. Their house did not have heating but they were taught to always see the good in things.

They remembered playing outside all day and when it was dinner time, they would gather around the dinner table. Their mother would say to them, “Tell me something good that happened today.” Their father had a near — death accident which caused severe damage to his right hand. The accident made their father develop a terrible temper (脾气),but their mother would always sing to them and read them children’s stories. “That optimism was something our family always had, even when we had little else,” the brothers said.

During the trip, they tried to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives and decided to run a clothing business. They started selling T-shirt designs in street fairs around Boston. Their design was just a simple drawing of a stick figure with the phrase “Life is good.”

Their small business didn’t turn out so well, but the two brothers did not give up. Then they changed their target audience. This time, they tried to sell their T-shirts to college students, going to different schools every night. Again it did not work. To figure out what they had been doing wrong, Bert and John held beer parties, where they asked their friends for their honest opinions. In return , they could enjoy free beer and amusing stories from the brothers. Again this did not seem to work and they were running out of money.
