21、A study led by Plana-Ripoll, a doctor at Aarhus University in Denmark, tries to deal with a fundamental question that has bothered researchers for more than a century—what exactly causes mental illness?
In the hope of finding the answer, scientists have piled up a large amount of data over the past decade, through studies of genes and brain activity. They have found that many of the same genes underlie seemingly distinct disorders and that changes in the brain's decision-making systems could be involved in many conditions.
The researchers are also rethinking theories of how our brains go wrong. The idea that mental illness can be classified into distinct, separate categories like “anxiety” has been disproved to a large extent. Instead, recently they’ve found that disorders shade into each other, and there are no hard dividing lines.
The researchers are trying to understand the biology that underlies mental illness. They have a few theories. Perhaps there are several dimensions (维度) of mental illness, so depending on how a person scores on each dimension, they might be more likely to have some disorders than others. An alternative idea is that there is a single factor that makes people easier to suffer from mental illness in general. What disorder they develop is then determined by other factors. Both ideas are being taken seriously though the former one is more widely accepted by the researchers.
The details are still unclear, but most researchers agree that one thing is specific: The old system of categorizing mental disorders into neat boxes does not work. They are also hopeful that, in the long run, replacing this framework with one that is grounded in biology will lead to new drugs and treatments. The researchers aim to reveal, for instance, the key genes, brain regions and neurological processes involved in psychopathology (精神病理学), and target them with treatments. Although it might take a while to get there, they are long-term optimistic if the field really does its work.

22、As Earth’s climate has been warming, the risk of urban flooding has grown, too. Building ponds to collect rainwater can limit that flooding. But in some places, those ponds may actually add to global warming by releasing greenhouse gases into the air. That’s the finding of a new study.
Earth’s changing water cycle has made many cities and their suburbs wetter. These urban areas have a limited ability to soak up rainwater. Floods hit roads, concrete parking lots, buildings and other features. Ponds can collect the water that runs off. But where nature hasn’t provided enough ponds, cities have been building them. Florida alone has built about 76,000 such stormwater ponds. Many other areas also rely heavily on these ponds for flood control, notes Audrey Goeckner. She’s a graduate student at the University of Florida in Gainesville and lead author of the new study.
Recently, her team compared the uptake and later release of carbon-based gases at five stormwater ponds. All were in Manatee County, Fla. That’s on the state’s central west coast. Along with a lab technician, Goeckner collected samples from the bottoms of the ponds. The samples had a layer of muck (淤泥) above sandy material. Older ponds had deeper layers of muck. Back at the lab, the research team measured the carbon-based compounds in the samples.
In general, older ponds released less of these carbon-based chemicals into the air than younger ponds did. At the same time, “the rate that older ponds were storing carbon in the sediment (沉积物) increased,” Goeckner says. In contrast, younger ponds seem to emit (排放) more carbon than they stored away.
“It’s just really important to take into account how these human-made ecosystems are playing a part in the environment,” she concludes. Some ponds mostly store carbon, it seems. Others mostly release it into the air. Her team shared its findings on March 9 in Communications Earth & Environment.

23、 A new UBC Okanagan study finds children not only gain the benefits of working with therapy (治疗) dogs – they enjoy it too.
“While we do frequently see children improve in therapy dog programs, we didn’t have data to support that they enjoyed the time as well,” says Nicole Harris, who conducted this research while a master’s student in the School of Education.
The research saw 22 children from the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club take part in a series of sessions to help them build their social skills. Over six weeks, the children were accompanied by therapy dogs as they completed lessons. Each week the children were taught a new skill, such as introducing themselves or giving directions to others. The children would first practice with their assigned therapy dog before running through the exercise with the rest of the group. In the final phase, the children, accompanied by their new furry friend, would practice their new skills with university students located in the building.
“Therapy dogs are often able to reach children and facilitate their growth in surprising ways. We saw evidence of this in the social skills of children when they were paired with a therapy dog,” says Dr. John-Tyler Binfet, associate professor in the School of Education and director of BARK. “The dogs helped create a non-threatening climate while the children were learning these new skills. By interacting with them, the children’s moods improved and their engagement in their lessons increased. ” While the children were learning and practising their new skills, the research team collected data.
At the end of the six weeks, Harris interviewed eight children, aged 5 to 11 years old, who regularly attended the sessions. Each child indicated the social skill-training program with therapy dogs was an enjoyable and positive experience and the dogs were a meaningful and essential part of the program.
As a full-time elementary school teacher, Harris notes that schools have become increasingly important in helping students develop social and emotional skills, and this research could contribute to the development of future school-based or after-school programs.
【1】What was Harris’s research meant to explore?
A.When and how children could learn new social skills well.
B.Whether working with therapy dogs was pleasant to kids.
C.Why therapy dogs benefited kids’ learning of social skills.
D.What helped children learn and practice new social skills.
【2】What does the underlined word “facilitate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Promote.
B.Maintain.
C.Influence.
D.Determine.
【3】How was the research conducted?
A.The behavior of 22 children aged 5 to 11 was recorded.
B.The participants were taught a skill and tested 6 weeks later.
C.University students were also involved to help with the study.
D.Most participants were interviewed at the end of the research.
【4】What does Harris think of the research?
A.It’s an important part of elementary school education.
B.It should be carried out in elementary school separately.
C.It can help develop students’ social and emotional skills.
D.It serves as reference for developing school programs.
24、Social workers’ roles in assisting individuals and communities have become necessary. Many disadvantaged individuals and communities need their support. They are highly valued. The following are some of them.
School social workers.
These social workers create strategies to help students’ academic performance and social development with teachers and parents. They assist, students with issues such as bullying (欺凌). School social workers also talk with families to solve absences from class or access to special education resources. While school social workers and guidance advisers share some similarities, they have some differences. School social workers focus more on a student’s personal life.
Child and family social workers.
These social workers assist families safeguard children. They support families in finding housing and childcare services and assist in applying for benefits. When children are badly treated, they will bring them to a better living situation. Some work to reunite separated families or organize adoptions (收养).
Health care social workers.
These social workers help patients understand their diagnoses and adjust their lifestyles. They also help doctors understand how illnesses affect their patients’ mental and emotional health. Social work with seniors and the elderly, long-term pain management and medical social work are a few of the specialties of health care social workers.
Mental health and substance abuse social workers.
These social workers assist patients who have mental illnesses or addictions. They educate the patients on how to deal with their condition.
