二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Turtles have an unfortunate habit of eating plastic objects floating in the sea. These cannot be digested and may ultimately kill them. It is widely assumed that this fondness for plastics is a matter of mistaken identity. Drifting plastic bags, for instance, look similar to jellyfish (水母), which many types of turtles love to eat. Yet lots of plastic objects that end up inside turtles have no similarity to jellyfish. Joseph Pfaller of the University of Florida therefore suspects that the smell of marine microorganisms (海洋微生物) which grow on floating plastic objects fools turtles into feeding.

The idea that the smell of floating plastic objects might lure animals to their death first emerged in 2016. Researchers at the University of California noticed that certain chemicals, notably dimethyl sulphide (二甲基硫), which are released into the air by floating plastics, are those which many seabirds sniff () to track down food. These chemicals mark good places to hunt because they indicate plenty of the algae (海藻) and bacteria (细菌). The researchers also found that birds which pursue their food in this way are five or six times more likely to eat plastic than those which do not.

Since turtles are known to break the surface periodically and sniff the air when finding the way to their feeding areas, Dr Pfaller theorised that they are following these same chemicals, and are likewise fooled into thinking that floating plastic objects are eatable.

To test that idea, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They arranged for 15 turtles to be exposed to four smells: the vapour from deionised water; the smell of turtle-feeding balls made of shrimp and fish meal; the smell of a clean plastic bottle chopped up into ten pieces; and the smell of a similarly chopped bottle that had been kept in the ocean for five weeks to allow algae and bacteria to grow on it.

Two of the smells proved far more attractive to the animals than the others. When sniffing both the smell of food balls and that of five-week-old bottles, turtles kept their nostrils out of the water more than three times as long, and took twice as many breaths as they did when what was on offer was the smell of fresh bottle-plastic or deionised-water vapour.

Though they have not yet tested whether dimethyl sulphide is the culprit, Dr Pfaller and his colleagues think it is the most likely candidate. In an unpolluted ocean, pretty well anything which had this smell would be eatable— or, at least, harmless. Unfortunately, five-week-old plastic bottles and their like are not.

1Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that turtles ________.

    A.mistake plastic objects for jellyfish

B.are fooled into eating plastics by a smell

C.are dying out as a result of plastic pollution

D.break down plastics without much difficulty

2What can we infer from the research on seabirds?

A.Seabirds eat plastics for the taste.

B.The algae and bacteria grow well on plastics.

C.Researchers got the idea from the study of turtles.

D.Some seabirds pursue food in a similar way to turtles.

    3Dr Pfaller’s research shows_______.

A.turtles prefer the smell of plastics

    B.turtles live on marine microorganisms

C.dimethyl sulphide may be to blame for turtles’ death

D.plastics release the same chemicals as microorganisms

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To propose a new way to study turtles.

B.To stress the importance of improving ecosystem.

C.To introduce the findings on the cause of turtles’ death.

D.To explain the effects of plastic pollution on sea animals.

  • 22、When Brittany was a child, it was difficult for her to relate to her brother with autism (自闭症), Ryan. “Growing up, I didn’t understand how to relate to him,” Brittany said. “He loves sports — he is a walking encyclopedia (百科全书) of sport. I would try to talk about sports, but I knew so little and he knew so much. At times, I felt like a bad sister because I couldn’t connect to him.”

When Brittany first joined TikTok, she didn’t have any plans to include Ryan in them. Then, a single video changed everything. One day, Brittany decided to put on a skincare face mask, leaving her with a pink, unusual look. She found his reaction amusing, so she decided to share it, thinking that others would agree... and she was right! The video went viral (快速传开)!

As fun as it was for Brittany to see everyone appreciating Ryan’s reaction, it also brought about conversations around autism. “Many people ask what’s wrong with Ryan and my reaction is to say that nothing is wrong without getting angry,” she said. “I think most people are curious about Ryan and autism. So we help them gain a better understanding by posting videos.”

One important message that Ryan hopes people remember is that autism is a disorder not an illness. He says, “Autism is how the brain functions.” In other words, just his brain works differently, which doesn’t make him less valuable than anyone else. In sharing these moments with Ryan, whether they’re serious and educational or fun and silly, Brittany herself has come to better understand her brother.

【1】Why did Brittany think of herself a bad sister?

    A.She suffered from autism.

    B.She knew nothing about sports.

C.It was sad for her to have a silly brother.

D.It was difficult for her to communicate with Ryan.

【2】What brought change to Brittany and Ryan’s life?

    A.A skincare face mask.

    B.Ryan’s funny reaction.

    C.The invention of TikTok.

    D.A video shared on TikTok.

【3】What does Brittany think of people’s question in Paragraph 3?

    A.Upsetting.

    B.Understandable.

    C.Regretful.

    D.Disappointing.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A.Autism is a serious disease.

    B.People with autism look silly.

C.Brittany loves her brother more after he got illness.

D.Brittany and Ryan make people know more about autism.

  • 23、   Austrian company Tec-Innovation recently disclosed smart shoes that use sensors to help people suffering from blindness or vision damage to detect obstacles up to four meters away.

Known as InnoMake, the smart shoe may become a possible alternative to the decades-old waking stick that millions of people depend on to get around as safely as possible. The currently available model relies on sensors to detect obstacles and warms the wearer via vibration and an alert sounded on a Bluetooth-linked smartphone. "Sensors on the toe of the shoe detect obstacles up to four meters away. The wearer is then warned by vibration and/or acoustic (听觉的) signals. This works very well and is already a great help to me personally,"Markus Raffer, one of the founders of Tec-Innovation, himself visually damaged, said.

That sounds impressive enough, but the company is already working on a much more advanced version that combines cameras and artificial intelligence to not only detect obstacles but also their nature."Not only is the warming that I am facing an obstacle relevant, but also the information about what kind of obstacle I am facing. Because it makes a big difference whether it's a wall, a car or a staircase, Raffer claimed.

The advanced system is fix in the front of the shoes, in a waterproof and dust proof case. It is powered by a heavy-duty battery that can last for up to one week, depending on use.The battery can be charged in just three hours, using a USB cable.

The next step for Tec-Innovation is to use the data collected by its system to create a kind of street view navigation map for visually damaged people.

"As it currently stands, only the wearer benefits from the data the shoe collects as he or she walks. It would be much more sustainable if this data could also be made available to other people as a navigation aid,"computer scientist Friedrich Fraundorfer explained.

    【1】InnoMake aims to

A.collect data as blind people walk

    B.replace walking sticks completely

C.clear obstacles in streets for blind people

D.help blind people walk around more safely

【2】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The way that InnoMake works.

B.The function of InnoMake in life.

    C.The purpose of developing InnoMake.

D.The advantages of InnoMake over other shoes.

【3】What does the author want to show with the example of Raffer?

A.Raffer has benefited a lot from InnoMake.

B.He faces a lot of difficulties in his daily life.

C.The company will surely make a huge profit

D.Raffer cares more about the nature of obstacles.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.InnoMake is sure to be a navigation aid.

B.More wearers will benefit from innoMake.

C.There's still space for InnoMake to improve.

D.Data should be shared among more wearers.

  • 24、Biologists are becoming more and more concerned that global climate change will probably reduce biodiversity. Some biologists estimate that 35% of animals and plants could become extinct in the wild by 2050 due to global climate change. Before the industrial revolution, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rarely climbed above 280 ppm; But during the 2014 calendar year, carbon dioxide levels ascended to 402 ppm.

In the fall of 2014, the National Audubon Society released a report entitled Birds and Climate Change. It is a comprehensive, first-of-its kind study that predicts how climate change could affect the ranges of 588 North American birds. Of the 588 North American bird species, more than half are likely to be in trouble. The National Audubon Society’s models indicate that 314 species will lose more than 50 percent of their current climatic range by 2080. Of the 314 species at risk from global warming, 126 of them are classified as climate endangered. These birds are projected to lose more than 50 percent of their current range by 2050. The other 188 species are classified as climate threatened and expected to lose more than 50 percent of their current range by 2080 if global warming continues at itscurrent pace.

In January 2020, two widely reported studies were carried out to show the dramatic impact of climate disruption on our wildlife and fisheries along the California coast. The first study showed that from 2014 to 2016, over a million common murres from Alaska through California died as a result of a marine heat wave. The second study shows that acid rainfall caused by carbon emissions is harming shell-building animals in the ocean. The study found that larval Dungeness crabs’ shells suffer damage in west coast seawater, putting at risk the most profitable fishery in California and a beloved local seafood.

These newly documented impacts provide more evidence that we are running out of time to take action by drastically reducing our use of fossil fuels in order to slow the rate of climate disruption and to give birds and other animals more time to adapt.

Visit our How You Can Help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions page to learn what you can do to help protect these species at risk from climate disruption.
