二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   FLEA MARKETS (跳蚤市场)

For the best selection of flea market product, get there as soon as it opens on the first day of the market. If it’s open Saturday and Sunday all year round, go early on Saturday morning. For seasonal or annual flea markets, go early in the season, preferably the first weekend. You’ll have first pick of the goods the vendors (小贩) gathered during the year.

For the biggest discounts, it’s just the opposite. Shop mid to late afternoon during the final day, or days, of the flea market. The vendors are tired and ready to get home –and they might just cut you some fantastic deals if you ask. You may have to haggle a bit, but you’ll probably go home with some bargains, especially if you’re buying large, heavy pieces the tired sellers don’t want to pack and load.

    YARD SALES

Yard sale shopping is a lot like flea market shopping. You’ll find the best selections when the sale first starts. Go early on the first day of the sale. If the sale starts at 7 am, be there a few minutes before – but not so early that you’re labeled an early bird. Don’t wait until Saturday to visit a yard sale that starts on Friday.

Like flea market vendors, yard sale sellers aren’t as willing to haggle early in the morning, but the prices are usually pretty low to start. Don’t wait until the afternoon bargain hours to shop at yard sales.

    THRIFT STORES (旧货店)

For the best thrift store selections, ask the employees when the new product arrives. It could be a certain day of the week or a certain time each day. Find out, and then plan your visits for those days and times.

Thrift store prices are usually low, so you might want to snatch things up as soon as you find them. If the prices seem unusually high, ask about their sale structure. Thrift stores don’t always state their sales clearly and sometimes the sales are confusing. Find out when they discount the items that interest you. That’s when you’ll find the best deals.

1As for the biggest discounts in the Flea Markets, you’d better______.

A.get there about 6:50 am on Friday

    B.go early on Saturday morning

C.ask the host when the new product arrives

D.buy items late afternoon during the last day

2The best Thrift Store selections should be taken_______.

A.after the sale starts B.as soon as you find them

C.when new items arrive D.before the afternoon bargain begins

3The text is most probably intended for ______.

    A.antique collectors B.economical shoppers

    C.product vendors D.wealthy people

  • 22、   It’s undeniable that spending time outdoors and in nature lifts our spirits and makes us feel more centered and at peace. When we breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the beauty of trees, streams and oceans, we naturally tend to feel more connected to ourselves and others.

Over the past decade, scientists have been exploring why nature — and dirt specifically — is such a powerful tool in improving our mood. According to researchers, the secret may lie in the mi¬crobes (微生物)of the soil. One bacterium specifically----Mycobacterium Vaccae M. Vaccae —has been identified as having the power to affect our moods and cognitive function as well.

Experiments conducted at Sage Colleges in New York found that contact with M. Vaccae can increase serotonin levels in the brain — a chemical that is associated with higher levels of happi¬ness ,increased focus, and reduced anxiety. In order to explore how the bacteria can improve learn¬ing, researchers Dory Mathews and Susan Jenks experimented with mice in a maze. Mice that in¬gested the bacteria navigated the maze twice as fast as the control group and proved less anxious as well.

Humans can absorb M. Vaccae just by playing in the dirt. We take in it when we breathe, we consume it in organic vegetables, and it can also enter our bloodstream through skin contact, espe¬cially where we have open cuts. This may explain why children in school perform better after break.

Neuroscientist Christopher Lowry at the University of Bristol in England believes that he has i- dentified why this incredible bacterium works. "What we think happens is that the bacteria activate immune cells, which release chemicals called cytokines that then act on receptors on the sensory nerves to increase their activity. ”

Beyond the power of M. Vaceae, scientists have been proving for decades that exposure to dirt, and the huge number of microbes found in dirt, can strengthen our immune system. When our body comes into contact with bacteria, it stores die infonnation in a type of library and can then use that information to fight sickness and infection more effectively.

Happiness, focus, less anxiety......I’ll  take a double dose of dirt; please!

1What raises people’s spirits while spending time outdoors?

    A. Air. B. Trees.

    C. Water D. Dirt.

    2How does M. Vaccae work?

    A. By working on sensory nerves. B. By fighting sickness and infisction,

    C. By strengthening the immune system. D. By making immune cells active.

3According to the text, what does the author intend to do next?

    A. Provide some advice on reducing anxiety for readers,

    B. Summarize the previous paragraphs about lifting one’s mood.

    C. Explain how he or she will expose himself or herself to dirt.

    D. Introduce a new topic related to dirt for discussion.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Fight Sickness and Infection More Effectively

    B. How Getting Dirty Can Actually lift Your Mood

    C. Let’s Take a Deep Breath of Fresh Air

    D. Enjoy Beauty and Naturally Connect to Others

  • 23、   Scientists have long known a fairly reliable way to extend life span in rodents(啮齿类动物) and other lab animals: Reduce the amount of calories they eat by 10 percent to 40 percent.

This strategy known as caloric restriction, has been shown to increase the life span of various organisms and reduce their rate of cancer and other age-related ailments. Whether it can do the same in people has been an open question. But an intriguing new study suggests that in young and middle-aged adults, chronically(慢性地) restricting calorie intake can have an impact on their health.

In the new study, researchers looked at a group of 143 healthy men and women who were instructed to practice caloric restriction for two years, with the aim of cutting the calories they consumed by 25 percent.

On average, the dieters managed to slash about 12 percent of their total calories, or roughly 300 calories a day, the amount in a few chocolate chip cookies or a small Starbucks Mocha. But the group saw many of their health markers improve.

They lost weight and body fat. Their blood pressure fell slightly, and they had better blood sugar control and less inflammation. At the same time, a control group of 75 healthy people who did not practice caloric restriction saw no improvements in any of these markers. Some of the benefits in the calorie restricted group stemmed from the fact that they lost a large amount of weight. However, the results of the survey suggest that caloric restriction might have some unique biological effects on disease pathways in the body.

Calorie restriction may be a useful tool for better health and weight loss, but it’s unclear whether the changes in the new study will ultimately translate into longevity and reductions in chronic disease, said Frank Hu, the chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard, who was not involved in the research.

1What happened to the lab animals, after the amount of calories was reduced?

    A.More lab animals got cancers.

B.More Lab animals can live longer.

C.Health condition of lab animals got worse.

D.Lab animals will suffer from no disease in their future life.

2From the study, after caloric restriction, what happened to the 143 people?

    A.Their healthy markers improved.

B.They did not get chronic diseases.

C.They did not get lose any weight at all.

D.They did not eat chocolate chip cookies.

3Which work has the similar meaning to the underline word, slash?

    A.Reduce. B.Increase.

    C.Add. D.Beat.

4From Frank Hu’s words, what can be inferred?

A.Calorie restriction is beneficial to weight loss.

B.People with caloric restriction will love longer than others.

C.More people should be encouraged to take caloric restriction in life.

D.The relation between caloric restriction and longer lifespan is uncertain.

  • 24、   The first letter arrived dated March 31, 2020. It was from a close childhood friend, with whom I regularly keep in touch via those correspondence (通信) methods such as instant texts, FaceTimes and phone calls, as most young people do.

“The sun has set on our 15th day of quarantine (隔离),” my friend wrote, “Isn’t it crazy how quickly this has become the new normal?” Plus, he said, writing a letter could be a fun creative exercise to break up the boredom of those days. So I wrote back.

When I was in fifth grade, we had a pen-pal program with a class in Australia, but when the school year ended, my pal and I fell out of touch. Anytime I traveled afar, I tried to write to my family; somehow I always tended to get home before my letters did.

But at this particular moment, I’ve found it wonderful to write letters in the simplest way. In return, I’ll get something far more interesting than an ordinary account of my own days: a patchwork of pages that were sent to me by others, each one fresher than the last one.

A recent article reported a rise in snail mail and handwritten messages; the practice seems to be popular as people deal with sadness from the pandemic (流行病). More likely, it’s because we’re missing our friends and classmates; we’re so badly aching for the simple physical connections that the virus has taken away.

“When I got your letter, the first thing I wanted to do was to text you, but I quickly controlled myself,” another childhood friend wrote. “What an affront to text the person who writes to you.” I smiled as I pulled out a blank sheet to start my response. I like to think I’ll keep this up for as long as I can, or at least as long as someone is willing to write back.

【1】What did the author’s friend write in the letter according to paragraph 2?

    A.The boring life in quarantine.

    B.The need of social distancing.

C.The desire for a new normal life.

D.The way of doing creative exercise.

【2】What does the author want to prove through his past writing experience?

A.His regret to lose touch with his pal.

B.His less communication by letter now.

C.His preference to travel to a distant place.

D.His concern about his family even in trips.

【3】Why is the author in favor of writing letters?

A.It can help prevent viruses spreading.

B.Snail mail is a popular way to contact.

C.People can find comfort from it.

    D.Physical connections can be avoided.

【4】What does the underlined word “affront” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Dishonesty.

    B.Impossibility.

    C.Disagreement.

    D.Impoliteness.
