21、Wendo Musaly was born in Congo (DRC) on November 21, 1996. Two months after he was born, the situation in Congo went into a state of war causing unrest across the country. To keep their children, Wendo and his elder sister, safe, Wendo’s parents decided to flee to Tanzania, where they had to live in refugee (难民) camps, dependent on others for the basic necessities of life.
At 11, Wendo and his friends formed a music group. Guitars and drums were the only instruments they had to practice their music. After some time, they gained confidence in themselves and began performing in the street and even at parties. This was when Wendo realized that he had a talent in him.
After Wendo was hit with the realization that he was great with music, he began taking it more seriously. In 2016, when his family finally moved to the States, Wendo could see a future for himself. Although late, his parents got him and his sister in a high school to complete their studies in 2016. Wendo went to Winooski High School and completed his high school studies in 2020. All this time, he did not abandon his passion for music. Instead, he tried his hand at songwriting.
Musaly got his first break in August 2018 when he cooperated with Mr. Oli on a song named Pourquoi. As a newcomer, it was surprising for him to receive a positive response to his work, and this was just the beginning of his career. He started working on various projects and made tons of works produced by working with others. Wendo then released a song, Give Me That Eh, featuring Mr. Oli & Q-Boi and Tú’úndané featuring Lumiere. He also worked on some singles, including Kiboko WE and Je T’Aime.
Music was truly his talent, as he succeeded in each step that he took. Life has mysterious ways of rewarding people, and this was how Wendo Musaly was rewarded for his good spirit, positive attitude and perseverance (坚持不懈).

22、A Day in My Wheel Chair
Alex Johnson was born with a rare disorder and got his first wheelchair when he was 7 years old. When he was 11, he arranged to get a bunch of borrowed wheelchairs and then invited his teachers and fellow students to spend a day in them.
Dozens of volunteers quickly learned how complicated it was for Alex to get around the school. Balancing a lunch tray while also rolling down the cafeteria line? Super tricky. Those who participated also learned about the aches and pains Alex struggles with daily. There’s also the arduous, if not impossible, task of rolling a manual wheelchair up and down slopes.
Doors are the worst, they said, because they’re heavy and difficult to pull open from a rolling chair. And although the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies that doorways need to be wide enough to allow a wheelchair and the person’s hands to pass through safely, but many doors in older buildings are just too narrow.
But making the world more accessible for wheelchair users is a public policy issue controlled by government officials, so Alex recently challenged the Tennessee House of Representatives to spend a day in wheelchairs. And 10 men and women took him up on it! For a full day, they worked at their desks and attended all their regular meetings in wheelchairs. The lawmakers had the same eye-opening experiences that Alex’s school pals had.
State Representative Clark Boyd said, “I expected it to be difficult, but I had no idea how frustrating it could be to just simply get around.”
Thanks to comparable wheelchair challenges around the world, more lawmakers are getting the opportunity to learn more about what it’s like for the millions of people living with a mobility disability. “My hope is that through my challenge we can make the world more accessible,” Alex said. “Together, we can change the world, one challenge at a time.”
【1】In what way were the students’ experiences of spending a day in wheelchairs and the lawmakers’ experiences similar?
A.Gaining a better understanding of what life is like for disabled people.
B.Learning that making the world more accessible is government officials’ work.
C.Learning how tiring it is to roll a wheelchair to move around the school building.
D.Understanding what it’s like for Alex to balance a lunch tray while in a wheelchair.

A.compulsory
B.fruitless
C.ridiculous
D.challenging
【3】Why did the writer quote Clark Boyd’s remark?
A.To criticize the ADA for the narrow doors in buildings.
B.To show that Clark felt sympathy for wheelchair users.
C.To demonstrate that he had decided to change the public policy issues.
D.To convince the reader that lawmakers can make the world more accessible.
23、 The second little pig was unlucky. He built his house from sticks. It was blown away by a wolf. His brother, by contrast, built a strong house from bricks to prevent the wolf’s attack. However, in the real world it would help reduce pollution and slow global warming if more builders copied the wood-loving second pig.
Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by forcing developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. These standards are less green than they seem. Wind turbines (涡轮) and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those given out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between 30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime.
Buildings can become greener. They can be made of more recycled wood and parts of them can be prefabricated in off-site factories, greatly reducing truck journeys. But no other building material has environmental certificates as exciting and overlooked as wood. The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one of comparable strength. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it, capturing more carbon. After buildings are pulled down, old wooden beams and boards are easy to recycle into new structures. Wood is also a good insulator (隔热材料). A softwood window frame provides nearly 400 times as much insulation as a plain steel and over a thousand times as much as an aluminium (铝) frame.
Carpenters’ efforts alone will not bring the environmental cost of the world’s buildings into line. But using wood can do much more than what is appreciated. Thus, the second little pig was not wrong, just before his time.
【1】Why is the story about the pigs mentioned?
A.To bring up the topic of the text.
B.To prove the author’s argument.
C.To offer background information.
D.To inspire the readers’ imagination.
【2】What can we know about the “zero carbon” standards?
A.It’s impossible to make them come true.
B.They don’t mean no carbon is given out.
C.They are only fit for developed countries.
D.It’s easy for them to meet today’s needs.
【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The ways of making buildings greener.
B.The usage of recycled steel in buildings.
C.The findings of new research about wood.
D.The advantages of wood as building materials.
【4】Which can replace the underlined word “prefabricated” in paragraph 3?

C.Constructed. D.Compared.
24、Pressure Cooker Safety
When you are cooking with a pressure cooker, you should learn a few common sense rules:
1. Never leave the cooker unwatched when it is in use.
2. Add sufficient liquid but never past the recommended fill point. Overfilling the cooker may block the vent pipe(排气孔)and cause the cooker to explode.
3. Set the cooking time. Too much time may overcook the food or too much pressure may buildup the cooker. Too little time will lead to undercooked food.
4. If you are new to pressure cooking, follow the cooking instructions carefully. Heat and time can either result in a great meal or a ruined one.
5. Never try to force a pressure cooker cover open. Allow the cooker to cool or run it under cool water before trying to open the cover.
6. Clean the cooker thoroughly after each use. Mild detergent(洗涤剂)and hot water work the best. Do not use stove ash or sand for they may damage the cooker. The gasket is best cleaned in warm soapy water and then dried. Store the gasket in the bottom of the pot.
【1】According to the first rule, the user should ______.
A.never turn off the stove
B.always add sufficient liquid
C.never leave the cooker empty
D.keep the cooker under close watch
【2】According to the fifth rule, a pressure cooker cover should be opened ______.
A.after it is cooled down
B.while it is still on the stove
C.with force when it is hot
D.as soon as the cooking is finished
【3】Which of the following operations may be dangerous?
A.Overfilling the cooker with food and water.
B.Cleaning the cooker with detergent.
C.Cooling the cooker with cold water.
D.Setting too little cooking time.
