21、 Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the Titanic when it struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912, a mere 700 people lived on. Here is one story of the Titanic survivors whose stories are still haunting more than a century after the ship's sinking, revealing the true facts of the disaster.
A junior wireless officer aboard the Titanic, Harold Bride was one of the two people responsible for sending SOS messages to nearby ships, thus allowing the Carpathian to rescue the Titanic survivors.
He and another man on duty, Jack Phillips, raced to send SOS signals to nearby ships-but as the communications specialists, they knew that the closest, the Carpathian, would likely not arrive until alter the Titanic sank. They worked wildly until Captain Edward Smith came and told them they were relieved of duty;the ship had nearly lost power, and only two lifeboats remained.
They made a run for Collapsible B and were just getting it into the water when a wave swept across the deck(甲板),throwing both Harold Bride and the upturned boat into the ocean.
Bride and 15 others struggled onto the waterlogged, sinking Collapsible B and survived until other lifeboats collected them and conveyed them to the Carpathian.
Once aboard the Carpathian, Bride got back to work and began helping the ship's wireless officer send messages from the other Titanic survivors.
When the Carpathian made land, Bride had to be carried ashore: he had injured one foot in the plunge into the ocean, and the other was frostbitten after a night in the Atlantic's icy waters.

22、Many African people have always dreamed that one day the capitals of all African countries will be linked by high-speed railway lines. Now they have one step closer to realizing that dream.
On October 10, 2016, Africa’s first modern electrified railway, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, became fully operational. This railway, built by Chinese companies, is the first railway built using a complete set of Chinese standards outside China.
But it has not been easy for Chinese companies to win Ethiopian support for the project. The Ethiopian government once considered Western standards the best ones. But thanks to China’s outstanding performance in building and managing railways, Chinese firms ended up getting the project.
“After rounds of talks, the Ethiopian government came to realize that Chinese standards are not inferior (次于) to western ones, and more importantly, they best suit the country, " Meng Fengchao, board chairman of China Railway Construction Corp, told Xinhua.
This is just another of China’s recent achievements in railway building. China has the world’s longest railway and they make up a huge 60 percent of the world’s total. Besides length, China also does well in speed. China is the only country with trains running at 350 km per hour on lines such as Beijing-Tianjin and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railways.
Thanks to these achievements, it’s easy to forget that China wasn’t an early starter in the high-speed rail network game. Japan started 50 years ago, while Germany began 20 years ago. China only launched its high-speed railway14 years ago.
How has China’s high-speed railway been able to develop so quickly? The driving force behind the fast development has been the country’s great need for transportation.
“The high-speed railway not only covers the distance, but also connects people, information and goods, greatly boosting the regional economy, people’s lives and tourism, ” Huang Xin, an official from China Railway Corporation, told China Daily. The high-speed railway has become the transportation of choice for many Chinese people. According to China Railway Corp, about 4, 200 bullet trains run in China each day, meaning that more than 4. 5 million passengers can travel.
This is only the beginning of China’s high -speed railway development. The National Development and Reform Commission said that China plans to have 38, 000 km of high-speed railways by 2025.
【1】What can be learned about the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway?
A.It was still under construction.
B.It links capitals of several countries.

23、 If humans ever settle on Mars, they will need water. There is just one problem---there seems to be only huge sheets of ice. Luckily, we know how to drill(钻孔) ice for water. Such methods are already used in Antarctica, and researchers now think they could get them to work on the Red Planet, too. The atmosphere of Mars is too dry to make extracting water vapour from it possible. So ice seems the best bet. But the obvious ice sheets are in the unlivable polar ice caps and would be difficult to reach for drilling.
However, in 2018, at the edge of the cliffs, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted relatively accessible water ice that is probably at least 130metres thick and covered in just a few metres of rock and dust. These may be the best place to get the water needed for future exploration of the planet.
The drilling techniques needed have already been developed for cold areas on Earth where we need to melt buried ice for water. In the early 1960s the US Army used a type of subsurface reservoir(水库)called Rod Well, in army camps in Greenland. The method works by drilling through the ground into the ice, melting the ice to create a pool, and then pumping water up. By supplying heat continuously, they create a reservoir and a steady water supply. It has been used in remote areas such as the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station Stephen Hoffman at the Aerospace Corporation in Texas and his colleagues simulated(模拟)how a Rod Well would do on Mars. They found that with the power of 9 kilowatts (千瓦)to melt ice, it could in theory produce about 380 litres of water each day and maintain a reservoir of constant size at the bottom of a borehole(钻孔). That is close to the average daily water use each person in the US, but about 10 times what each astronaut on the International Space Station uses daily.
【1】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "extracting" in the first paragraph ?

A.Preparing to settle on the Red Planet one day.
B.Finding water on the Red Planet for survival.
C.Using some ways to create a livable environment on Mars.
D.Drilling water wells in Martian ice to survive on Mars.
24、 The European wood bison population has grown so much as to no longer be considered "Vulnerable" according to the global authority on conservation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN),in their latest Red List update.
A century ago, only 50 European bison remained on Earth, and they were mostly restricted to nature reserves.
“The conservation successes provide living proof that the world can set,and meet, ambitious biodiversity targets,” said Dr. Jane Smart,Global Director of IUCN' s Biodiversity Conservation Group in a statement.
Eight of the 47 bison herds have special genes for long-term survival, so scientists need to move animals in and out of herds in order to make healthy genes continue. Establishing greater numbers of separate herds will also help prevent possible losses due to things like diseases or natural disasters.
This led to the creation of a project called “Wilder Blean" where Blean Woods in Kent, England, will receive Dutch and Polish bison to create the first wild herd on the island for 6,000 years.
English conservationists and wildlife managers are interested in the effects bison have on the landscape. As large grass-eating animals, the constant foraging, digging and breaking they do on the forest floor have been assumed to have positive effects on the ecosystem.
Bison kill weak or dead trees by eating their bark or rubbing against them to remove their thick winter fur. This turns the tree into food and habitat for insects, which in turn provide food for birds.
In this way they act like forestry experts, and the Kent Wildlife Trust hopes that this significant species will maintain declining populations of plants, birds, insects, and mammals by way of their unique habits.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It seemed like it had only been a few years ago that Indigo had first rushed through our door. Her underbelly showed the signs of the litter she’d recently delivered. She had a nose for trouble. On one occasion, I had come home to find that she’d eaten a five-pound bag of flour. She was covered in white powder, and flour paw prints were everywhere, including, incredibly, on the countertops(台板). I asked the dog what the hell had happened, and Indigo just looked at me with a glance that said, I cannot imagine what you are referring to.
Time raced by. Our children grew up and went off to university. The mirror, which had reflected a young mum when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. I had surgery for cataracts(白内障). I began to lose my hearing. We all turned grey: me, my spouse(配偶), the dog.
In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and unsteady on her paws. She looked up at me sadly. You did say you’d take care of me when the time came, she said. You promised, Jenny. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side. I’d owned a succession of dogs since 1964, each one of them a witness to a particular stage of my life. But with the loss of Indigo, all that was over. The days of my dogs, I now understood, were done at last.
But one morning, as I was passing the Bed ’n’ Biscuit in my car, somehow I pulled over. I could at least lay eyes upon one cute dog, a tiny sweet thing. What harm could it do? She had a soft face.
Not long after, I got a call from the Bed ’n’ Biscuit, our dog daycare(日托所). One of their customers was leaving, and her dog which was the one I saw that morning, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they asked, might our family be interested in adopting her?
