二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The age of technology is a great and convenient thing, but it does have effects on us in many different ways.

It causes long-term memory loss. Thanks to Baidu, we don't really have to remember much of anything. Questions are answered at the drop of a hat because Baidu is all-knowing! Is that a good thing, though? People aren't digging through their brains anymore to find answers. Here's the good news: we can still exercise our long-term memory by simply thinking before we Baidu. If we don't want to go down that road, we can search Baidu for some memory games to play. Turn Baidu into an asset instead of an enemy.

It makes us lack patience. Baidu gives us what we want. Everything is instant. In fact, if we have to wait for even a handful of minutes for anything, we start losing our minds. This idea of instant satisfaction carries through to many other aspects of our lives, too, like when we go out to eat, drive in traffic, or even deal with workplace accidents. Instead of using Baidu to lessen our anger, try searching for some mindful meditations (沉思).Focus on our breath and realize everything doesn't have to move at lightening speed. We can actually listen to some peaceful spa or meditation music on our Pandora, too!

It wastes our time. Be honest, how much time are we spending on Baidu every day? Whether we're doing research for our own personal needs, buying clothing, or writing a research paper, we all spend a ton of time on the trusty Internet. Are we always being efficient with this time? For the sake of our precious time, if we haven't used Baidu Drive, we should. Keep spreadsheets, text docs, PDFs, slideshows, and even recordings exactly where we can easily find them. Keep a running list of websites we know we'll revisit.

Overall, things are different these days. Yes, there are noticeable negative side effects because of the Baidu invasion, but we don't have to fall into that trap. Stay sharp and don't let ourselves become imprisoned doing the Baidu god's bidding.

1Which of the following can best replace the underlined part “at the drop of a hat”?

    A.at one point B.in no time C.in a way D.at a loss

2Why do we turn impatient in real life according to paragraph 3?

A.We depend on ourselves too much.

B.We can't get everything with Baidu.

C.We can't get quick services in real life.

D.We get used to Baidu's quick convenience.

3What is the author's advice on saving time online?

    A.Using Baidu Drive.

    B.Keeping papers correctly.

    C.Being efficient with work.

    D.Emptying websites records timely.

4What does the text mainly tell us?

A.The side effects of Baidu and solutions.

B.The advantages and functions of Baidu.

C.The technology and influence of the Internet.

D.The disadvantages and risks of the Internet.

  • 23、I was very sad because my life had been severely disrupted and I was sure Christmas would never come. I was eight years old, but in the past few months, I had aged greatly.

Everyone was sad and desperate because of what had happened earlier in the year, in April, when the army attacked our village and took all the young boys and girls away. Families were separated and some were murdered. We were forced to work and march for many miles without food. The soldiers burned everything in our village and during our forced march we lost all sense of time and place.

During one rainy night we were miraculously able to get away from the soldiers and made our way back to our burned-out village. Most of us were sick, exhausted, and depressed. Most of the members of our families were nowhere to be found. We had no idea what day or time it was. This was the situation until my grandmother noticed the reddish and yellow flower we called, “Fire on the Mountain”. It was blooming in the middle of the marketplace where it had stood and bloomed for generations at Christmas time. For some reason it had survived the fire. Grandmother told us it was almost Christmas because the flower was blooming. As far as she could remember, this only occurred at Christmas time.

Suddenly, we heard the horn of several cars approaching our village. At first, we thought they were cars full of men with machine guns, so we hid in the forest. To our surprise, those people were just ordinary travelers on their way to their villages miles away to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.

They were shocked and horrified at the suffering and the destruction all around us. They told us it really was Christmas Eve. They shared the little food they had with us. They even helped us build a fire to keep us warm. We were not alone anymore. Christmas came to our village that night.

    【1】What did the army do?

A.They set fire to the village.

B.They robbed the village of food.

C.They took all the villagers away.

D.They forced the villagers to forget time.

【2】What do you know about the flower in Paragraph 3?

    A.It was saved by Grandmother.

    B.It was common on mountains.

C.It showed the coming of Christmas.

D.It had bloomed long before we returned.

【3】Why did the travelers come to our village?

    A.To bring us food.

    B.To visit their friends here.

    C.To transport machine guns.

D.To go home through our village.

【4】How did the author feel at the end of the story?

    A.Warm and hopeful.

    B.Amazed and excited.

    C.Grateful and inspired.

    D.Merry and peaceful.

  • 24、   According to a study published in the pre-print website bioRxiv, a team of Israeli scientists recorded tomato and tobacco plants producing sound frequencies which humans cannot hear in stressful situations—such as when they experienced a lack of water or their stems were cut. The team identified the sounds with microphones placed around 10 centimeters (around four inches) away from the plants, though the scientists say the noises could potentially be heard several feet away by some mammals and insects, such as mice.

Plants exposed to drought stress have been shown to experience cavitation (空化现象)— a process where air bubbles (气泡)form, expand and explode inside tissue that transports water. These explosions produce sound, but they have only ever been recorded using devices directly connected to the plants. The latest study, meanwhile, is the first to identify plants making sounds which can be detected over a distance. And the researchers say that cavitation could potentially be the source of these sounds.

The team detected the tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour on average when they were exposed to drought conditions, while the tobacco plants produced 11. When the stems of the plants were cut, the tomato plants made 25 sounds an hour on average and the tobacco plants produced 15. As a comparison, unstressed plants made less than one sound hour on aver-age, according to the study.

The team say that while they only tested tomato and tobacco. It's possible that other plants could also produce sounds, adding that the latest findings could have implications for agriculture. 'Plant sound emissions could offer a novel way for monitoring crops' water state—a question of vital importance in agriculture, ' the authors wrote in the study. 'More Precise irrigation can save up to 50 percent of the water consumption and increase the output, with dramatic economic implications. '

'According to Anne Visscher from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the U. K., the idea that the sounds could be used in precision agriculture is 'practical' though she urges caution regarding the Israeli team's suggestion that other animals could hear the sounds at a distance, ' New Scientist reported.

1What do the Israeli scientists find about plants?

A.Stressed plants tend to lack water.

B.Some plants can understand humans' sounds.

C.Stressed plants can make more frequent sounds.

D.Some mammals and insects can communicate with plants.

2What can we learn about cavitation?

A.It may contribute to the plants' sounds.

B.It may lead to plants experiencing drought.

C.It is determined by the number of air bubbles.

D.It was identified and recorded for the first time.

3How many sounds do the tomato plants make per hour on average when cut?

    A.11. B.15.

    C.25. D.35.

4What's Anne Visscher's attitude to applying the study to agriculture?

    A.Supportive. B.Cautious.

    C.Reserved. D.Opposed.
