二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The Ostrich Pillow was created by a European designer, who wanted to find a creative way to provide people with the health and productivity benefits commonly associated with power napping (小憩). Power napping is as important as normal sleep. Only when you’re done with a power nap, are you expected to actually work better.

When you wake up from a normal nap, it’s completely OK to glance around the room, confirm that John Hodgman riding a unicorn (独角兽) was just an amazing dream, and then roll over to fall back asleep.

But the Ostrich Pillow is specifically designed for those shorter periods of rest-the power naps-and the creators say that their invention allows you to sleep anytime, anywhere by creating a “little private space within a public one, to relax and rest.”

Perhaps this says a lot about people’s attitudes toward napping and the importance of taking a little nap during the busy workday. The advertisement for the Ostrich Pillow even claims that a 20-minute power nap can increase productivity by 37%.

Amazing! I can only dream of all the things I would get done at the office if I actually worked at 37% productivity. And to think, all I need is a quick nap as soon as I get to my desk!

In general, the Ostrich Pillow seems like a great idea. It’s convenient. It’s comfortable. It has a place for your hands. But the big question is whether people will actually wear it in public.

Nevertheless, I’m still hoping to get my hands on one of these to give it a proper test drive. But, until then, if you need me, I’ll be sleeping buried on my desk!

【1】According to the passage, we can learn that ________.

A.the Ostrich Pillow can help people sleep longer

B.power napping can help people work better

C.people from a normal nap usually dream about a unicorn

D.John Hodgman invented the Ostrich Pillow

【2】What does the writer think about the advertisement?

    A.He feels bored.

    B.He doubts it.

    C.He believes it.

    D.He dislikes it.

【3】Which of the following best describes the Ostrich Pillow?

    A.Comfortable and cheap.

    B.Productive and relaxing.

    C.Convenient and comfortable.

    D.Special and attractive.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The writer has got an Ostrich Pillow.

B.The writer is willing to have a drive test.

C.The writer will be sleeping on his desk without that.

D.The writer expects to own an Ostrich Pillow.

【5】What might be the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A.To introduce an invention for power napping.

B.To advertise a new invention — the Ostrich Pillow.

C.To inform people the importance of power napping.

D.To tell people a better way of keeping power napping.

  • 22、   By four months of age, the cognitive performance of ravens in experimental tasks testing their social  intelligence and understanding of the physical world parallels that of adult great apes according to a new study.

Previous studies have demonstrated impressive cognitive abilities in ravens. These birds are capable of considering the visual perspective of others, planning for the future, and insightful problem-solving. Ravens have even been called “feathered apes”. But can they really compare with, primates when it comes to higher cognition?

To put this question to the teal, Pika and colleagues adapted a battery of experimental tests designed for primates to meet the needs or ravens. They include both physical and social cognitive skills. Physical cognitive skills include special memory, understanding relative numbers and addition, and causal reasoning, while social cognitive skills include social learning, communication, and theory of mind.

Pika and colleagues conducted their tests with eight hand-raised ravens. The researchers found that, at four months old, ravens already possessed a full-blown set of cognitive skills and did not significantly change over the time period investigated.

Comparing the performance of the ravens with chimpanzees, Pika and colleagues found that, with the exception of special memory, the ravens' performance equalled that of the great apes. The findings strengthen the idea that ravens, like great apes, have evolved general, flexible cognitive skills, rather than being highly specialized in a few ones only.

However, the researchers caution that the performance of these eight ravens may not be representative of the species as a whole. The birds in this study were tested by two highly familiar people who had hand-raised them. Such socialization factors could affect how the birds perform in cognitive tests designed and administered by humans.

【1】Ravens have been called “feathered apes” for their________.

    A.vision

    B.speed

    C.strength

    D.intelligence

【2】What do we know about the tests?

A.Ravens' development lops out at four months.

B.Primates couldn't perform as well in the tests.

C.Pika laid emphasis on physical cognitive skills.

    D.Ravens develop comprehensive cognitive skills.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Limitations of the study.

    B.Conclusion of the study.

    C.Significance of the study.

    D.Expectation of the study.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.The Raven: A Birdbrain Nevermore

B.The Raven: A Mystery to Be Solved

C.The Raven: A Superstar in Experiment

D.The Raven: A Representative of the Species

  • 24、   Britain's got talent——but we're still wasting it. That's the main finding of a new report by researchers from Oxford University. Children of similar cognitive (认知) ability have very different chances of educational success it still depends on their parents' economic, socio-cultural and educational resources. This contradicts a commonly held view that our education system has developed enough to give everyone a fighting chance. The researchers looked at data from groups of children born in three decades: 1950s, 1970s and 1990s.

They found significant evidence of a wastage of talent. Individuals with high levels of cognitive ability but with disadvantages in their social origins are unable to translate their ability into educational achievement to the same extent as their more advantaged counterparts (对照组). The research, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, found that only about half of the difference in educational achievement between children from advantaged and disadvantaged parental backgrounds is due to differences in their cognitive ability. The other half is due to other factors (因素)associated with their backgrounds.

“If we compare the educational achievement of children born in the 1990s to those in the late 1950s and early 1970s, we see that parents' economic resources have become a less important factor, but their socio-cultural and educational resources have grown in significance," says Dr. Bukodi. “That means that your parents' place in society and their own level of education still play a big part in how well you may do."

These experts are now calling for policy-makers to acknowledge that formal qualifications is only one channel for upward mobility (流动性)for high-ability individuals of disadvantaged backgrounds. Dr. Bukodi says, “These findings show that there are limits to how far inequalities of opportunity can be reduced through educational policy alone. Changes in educational policy aren't having the powerful effect we want."

1What is the main finding of the research?

A.We're wasting talent due to education system.

B.Children of similar cognitive ability have different chances of educational success.

C.Children's cognitive ability depends on different educational resources.

D.Education system has developed enough to give chilidren a fighting chance.

2How does the author mainly develop the text?

    A.By making a comparison.

    B.By discussing a result.

    C.By giving examples.

    D.By presenting reasons.

3According to Dr. Bukodi, what affects children's educational achievement greatly?

    A.Children's cognitive ability.

    B.Parents' economic resouces.

    C.Educational policy.

    D.Parents' socio-cultural and educational backgrounds.

4What is the author's attitude towards the finding of the new report?

    A.Favorable. B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful. D.Negative.

Looking at how the wind blows the wild flowers to create a magical ______ of color. Looking at the way insects move hurriedly among plants. The beauty of nature has always been what ______ me to create art. I used to think that artists get inspiration from ______. Then I went to New York and something happened that really made me ______ that idea.

I was offered two-week courses at an art college there. When I took the train to the college for the first time, I had some serious ______ about whether I had made the right choice about coming. I was so used to the ______ countryside. New York, however, was noisy and ______. People pushed past me to squeeze through the doors of the subway cars. Everything moved at such a ______ pace that I felt I had no time to process it all.

Art classes were another story. ______ I started making art, I felt like myself again. Working from memory, I made a series of drawings of natural scenes. “Your images are very ______ and accurate,” one teacher told me. “Why not try using brighter colors and bolder shapes and motions?” I followed her advice and was amazed at the ______.

One day my cousin Ken came to see my drawings. “Gosh! These are great! They remind me of graffiti (涂鸦).” He exclaimed.

I looked at my drawings and was ______.To me graffiti was not art, it was ____ messy, unreadable writing on walls.

“Cool,” Ken continued. “If you’re into art, you should come with me.” I followed him to a huge factory that was completely ______ with graffiti. The walls were covered with bright colors, portraits, words and calligraphy-like symbols. What I saw was art not unlike what I had been making. The big ______ was that the artists drew images from city life, such as crowded subway trains and tall, shiny buildings. In every sketch, there was a(n) ______ that reminded me of that first subway ride, only it was a creative one.

Now I know that ______ is different for everyone. What drives one person crazy can be the thing that drives another person to ______. I may not look at the city the way street artists do, but they may not see nature the way I do. I ______ the way the city’s energy inspires them.
