22、English learners should not think that mistakes are bad. Alex Poole, a professor of English at Western Kentucky University, advises that language learners should instead see errors as signs of progress. One common problem is that English learners think too much about errors instead of communication. "The goal is to be able to communicate in practical terms. If you have an error, the only time you should worry about it is when it leads to misunderstanding," Poole said.
Poole said when speaking with a native English speaker, you can look for signs of confusion to detect errors. For example, when a person gives an unusual response to something you said, you can then ask them directly what the problem is. It also works if you ask a native speaker about the kinds of things that you say that could cause communication problems if you know him well.
When it comes to writing, Poole recommends thinking about errors in a different way. He suggests keeping a list of common errors. When English learners write something, instead of grammars, they should think about the big picture of what they are writing about. Then he advises thinking about how to put those ideas in order. After finishing it, you can go back and use your list to look for errors.
“My philosophy as a language learner has always been. .I'm going to monitor my errors, but I'm never going to be perfect, so that shouldn't bother me. But I should look for things which cause communication problems, and I just have to live with that."
You can read more about errors in Poole's new book Learning a Foreign Language-Understanding the Fundamentals of Linguistics. In the book, he also writes about study plans, progress and other issues in language learning.

23、A new keyboard can tell whether you are its owner. The keyboard records information about the typing pattern and sends it to a computer program. The program then checks to see if the pattern matches the right user. If not, an alarm sounds, and the computer locks the typist out. It locks out anyone else, even if the person knows password. What’s more, this device needs no batteries. It harvests all the energy it needs from the action of your typing. Besides, the keyboard is also self-cleaning and the keys are free of damage from water, oil and dirt.
The keys of the new keyboard are made of the same inexpensive plastic that might be found on any other standard keyboard. But instead of being smooth, the keys have millions of tiny plastic nanowires(纳米线)on their surface area to every key, increasing the effective contact area between the plastics and fingers. This ensures that there's enough power to run the keyboard as someone types.
Liming Dai, a scientist, did not work on the new keyboard, but he thinks the design could be important in getting better performance from a variety of devices. “It could also be applied to a touch screen, for instance,” Dai says. “Then smart phones and notepads could harvest energy from the action of someone typing or drawing.”
“Future work might make the keyboard even more useful,” Dai adds. “A later design might build tiny capacitors(电容器)onto the nanowires,” he suggests. Capacitors are little devices that temporarily store electric charges. Those might then LEDs to light a Keyboard in the dark.
Zhonglin Wang is a co-designer of the new keyboard. His team has built a working model of the keyboard. “If a company decides to fund(投资)its production, this keyboard could be in stores in as little as two years,” says Wang.
【1】How does the new keyboard tell whether you are its owner?
A. By matching the typing pattern to the right user.
B. By sending alarms to a computer program.
C. By checking the right user's passwords.
D. By recording information about the typing pattern.
【2】Why are there many nanowires on the surface of the keys?
A. To increase the effective contact area.
B. To improve the speed of typing.
C. To make the keys smooth.
D. To help produce power.
【3】What’s Dai’s attitude to the new keyboard?
A. Unconcerned. B. Doubtful.
C. Positive. D. Critical.

24、Are we in the middle of a workplace revolution?
Pool tables, nap-pods and free food. They sound like things at an all-inclusive hoilday resort(度假胜地) rather than in an office. However, digital tech companies have redesigned the office and provided unusual benefits to make the workplace a more pleasant and productive place to be. For these companies, the days of individual work area where people would work on their own for eight hours a day are no more.
This trend is now spreading outside Silicon Valley. Bob Randell, director of MiCareer, says, “Everyone’s realizing that tech companies don’t provide fancy benefits or games areas in order to seem cool and trendy. They want their staff to feel good about themselves and their jobs. Happy employees are less likely to leave to work for a competitor and, most importantly, they are more productive.”
This new kind of workplace also encourages people to cooperate and to be creative. Playing table tennis with league you rarely work with can lead to new ways of working and fresh thinking. Thinking over a problem while lying in a hammock(吊床) might be the best way to find its solution.
However, this doesn’t mean employers should immediately offer free ice cream, replace desks with sofas or let staff bring pets to work. “Firms have to make sure their benefits are of real interest to their employees, and that they can afford them for the long term.' If a company stops offering a benefit, staff happiness goes down and people are less satisfied,” says Anna Tang, head of HR at DigitalFore.
We advise our managers to monitor the effects of the benefits carefully. We now offer free breakfasts instead of free lunches. This persuades people to arrive early and to start work with good energy levels, which makes them more productive. Large free lunches just made them feel sleepy.
This revolution in the workplace is unlikely to slow down. As Randell says, “All businesses can improve by increasing creativity, cooperation and happiness at work. The most successful ones do exactly that, and which companies don't want to be successful?”
【1】What trend is spreading among tech companies?
