二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   My mother didn't set out to be a civil rights activist. In fact, she had no intention of becoming a pioneer of any sort. But because of the kind of person she was, and the times she lived through, she turned out to be both. She gave a whole group of black Alabama girls opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have had, and became a role model for all of us.

In 1941 she bought an old Victorian house to operate as a preschool. The huge, sunny rooms and breezy porches also served as a meeting place for my mother's first Girl Scout troop.

Though this may seem a small thing now, at the time it was a watershed (分水岭) event. Racism was a fact of life in the 1940s, and African American girls were barred from joining white troops. My mother, who was only five feet tall but could beat you on a fast﹣paced hike, decided it was time for a change. Her troop was the first for African Americans in Alabama. When Mama saw a need, she filled it.

In 1950, the Girl Scouts sent a group of women﹣all of them white﹣from headquarters in New York to help my mother with an overnight training camp. The women met in a wilderness area outside Birmingham where, unknown to them, the Ku Klux Klan(3 K党) was active. It never occurred to the women, black and white, that they were violating the rules of segregation (种族隔离) by camping together. That night, my mother awoke to the sound of men's voices. She stole out of her tent and saw them, dressed in their horrible uniforms. They offered what must have been a terrifying warning: Be gone by sunrise.

She never shared this story with me; people protected their children from some of the uglier sides of racism. But I over﹣heard my parents talking about it later that night and I realized there was something remarkable about Mama. I felt an obligation to give back, to seek solutions and create opportunities as she did.

"It's not something you choose to do; it's just something you do," she would say. And what I've found is this: In giving to others, you get as much as you give.

【1】What made the author's mother an advocate for civil rights?

    A.Her passion and educational background.

    B.Her race and financial condition.

    C.Her personality and social background.

    D.Her occupation and religious belief.

【2】Why does the author mention her mother's height in the third paragraph?

A.To indicate her deeply﹣rooted sympathy for her mother.

B.To emphasize her mother's surprising strength.

C.To illustrate what a role model should look like.

D.To show her mother differs from average black women.

【3】What does the author think of her mother's meeting with the Ku Klux Klan?

A.It proves to be dangerous and unworthy.

B.It reveals the danger of racism.

C.It violates the rules of segregation.

D.It inspires her to be brave and caring.

  • 22、   If you have never ever heard of pawpawyou are not alone. Most Americans do not know of the fruitalthough it is native to the United States. Oncehoweverit was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happilythose who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods.

The pawpaw is a kind of fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It is similar in size to a typical mango. It has a dull green-colored skinand a softalmost creamy orange inside. Most people agree that the pawpaw tastes like a combination of bananasapricots (杏)and mangos. Most people are very surprised by its sweet taste. The fruit has a very short harvest seasonfrom two to three weeks in September and October.

The pawpaw has never been sold commercially. The fruit requires a very special environment-lowwet areas that sometimes flood. In additionthe fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw trees.

Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers have organized “pawpaw festivals” to reintroduce the food to people.

Farmers are trying to grow different kinds of paw paws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in WestminsterMaryland. They told National Public Radio that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer markets and online.

So, who knows? Maybe the pawpaw will show up soon at a market near you.

1What is the pawpaw's most outstanding nature?

    A. It grows on trees all over the US.

    B. Its sour taste is like an apricot.

    C. It looks like a combination of bananas and mangos.

    D. It is very rich in sugar.

2Why is it difficult for the pawpaw to become a big business?

    A. It has to be sold far from the pawpaw tree.

    B. It is difficult to harvest in the low and wet areas.

    C. It is hard to keep its freshness for long.

    D. It needs expensive transportation to the market.

3What do farmers do to deal with the disadvantage of paw paws?

    A. They advertise on National Public Radio.

    B. They plant improved pawpaw trees.

    C. They organize pawpaw festivals.

    D. They sell the fruit at farmer markets.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. A forgotten American fruit is becoming popular again.

    B. Fruit of pawpaw plays an important part in America.

    C. Most people have hardly eaten fresh paw paws.

    D. A traditional fruit has changed people's diet.

  • 23、   In 2016, the world’s population cast aside 49 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste. It has been calculated that this number will grow to more than 60 million tons by 2021.

What is causing the upsurge (激增) in e-waste? Technology is becoming more and more widespread, covering almost every aspect of our lives. Meanwhile, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter - many products will be thrown away once their batteries die, to be replaced by new devices. Companies intentionally plan the obsolescence(废弃)of their goods by updating the design or software and discontinuing support for older models, so that now it is usually cheaper and easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one. Since prices are falling, electronic devices are in demand around the world.

As more people buy electronic equipment, manufacturers (制造商) are beginning to face shortages of the raw materials needed to make their products, so recycling and reusing materials from discarded products and waste makes economic and environmental sense.

Recycling e-waste is practiced both formally and informally. Proper or formal e-waste recycling usually involves taking apart the electronics, separating and sorting through the materials and cleaning them. Companies must obey health and safety rules to reduce the health and environmental hazards of handling e-waste by using pollution-control technologies. All this makes formal recycling expensive. Informal recycling is typically unlicensed and uncontrolled. At informal recycling workshops, men and women recover valuable materials by burning devices to melt away non-valuable materials. Usually they do not wear protective equipment and lack any awareness that they are handling dangerous materials.

With the amount of e-waste growing around the world, recycling alone will not be enough to solve the problem. In order to reduce e-waste, manufacturers need to design electronics that are safer, and more durable, repairable and recyclable. The best thing you can do is resist buying a new device until you really need it. Try to get your old product repaired if possible and, if it can’t be fixed, resell or recycle it responsibly. Before you recycle your device, put any broken parts in separate containers and close these tightly to prevent chemicals from leaking. Wear latex gloves and a mask if you’re handling something that’s broken.

【1】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The reasons for e-waste’s sharp increasing.

B.The causes of devices’ price dropping.

    C.The methods of recycling e-waste.

    D.The results of updating devices.

【2】What makes recycling e-waste meaningful according to the text?

A.To improve the poor quality of e-devices.

B.To lower the costs of technology innovation.

C.To relieve companies’ lacking raw materials.

D.To increase the variety of electronic products.

【3】Which of the following best explains the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 4?

    A.Waste.

    B.Harm.

    C.Limits.

    D.Costs.

【4】What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Everyone should take action to reduce e-waste.

B.Companies should be mainly responsible for reducing e-waste.

C.Fixing a device could cause more pollution than buying a new one.

D.E-waste could be broken down by burying it underground for a long time.

  • 24、   A 19-year-old independent artist, Omar Banos, is making’ waves as Cuco, a self-produced multi-instrumentalist and singer. Omar Banos’ approach to music is simple. He just wants to make the music he would listen to himself. Most of the time, that idea shows in his fast hip-hop beats and jazzy electric guitar solos.

Banos, who has released two self-produced albums, has been aspiring to music. He always wanted to play the guitar, and picked it up in high school before expanding his talent to the trumpet and French horn. “I’m very committed to my instruments,” Banos said. “If an instrument is right in front of me, and nobody has time to teach me, I just teach myself.” The same is true for his dreamy production. At 16, Banos got his hands in his first music-editing software, and he has developed a range of techniques.

Banos switches between English and Spanish, singing with his pleasant and warm lilt. “When I’m writing, I just put myself in a place, in a certain time period in my life,” he said, “songs just come out very naturally.”

Though Banos’ soft sound might encourage daydreaming, the independent artist is keeping his feet firmly on the ground during his breakthrough. “I feel I’m watching myself take off, but my brain is still on the ground,” he said. “This all happened so quickly. I didn’t even have time to get ready!”

Banos adds that despite his success, he isn’t always recognized as Cuco. “I will wear Vans, and sometimes people will get confused. They will ask whether I’m sure I’m there to perform. I guess I don’t look like an artist,” he said.

【1】Why did Banos make music in the beginning?

    A.To entertain himself.

    B.To kill his dull time.

    C.To make himself well-known.

D.To improve his skill in music.

【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.Banos’ high school life.

    B.Banos’ learning methods.

    C.Banos’ achievements in music.

    D.Banos’ great interest in music.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Banos?

    A.Honest and careful.

    B.Efficient and faithful.

    C.Creative and low-key.

    D.Devoted and warm-hearted.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.Banos has made himself take off

    B.Banos will continue daydreaming

C.A genius learned music in high school

D.A famous singer keeps pursuing his dream

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Is Binge-watching the New Addiction?

Have you ever loved a TV show? I mean really loved it? Like, you can’t wait to get to work to talk about it? What about the cliffhanger? That’s the unsolved situation at the end of the episode which makes you want to watch the next one. But, when will the next one be?

Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show quickly. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favourite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.

However, this amazing gift may in fact be harmful. Recent research from British media watchdog Ofcom (英国通信管理局) finds that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their housework. Next we’ll be missing work!

Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking, all of which are often associated with compulsive behaviour, a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to failure of attention in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?

The numerous information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, like any behaviour done to extremes, it can become dangerous. And when the activity begins to enter other areas, causing us to stop functioning — then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, a little of what you fancy does you good.
