    The sound of music

The Calgary Folk Music Festival (25-28 July) was born 40 years ago, and has grown from a grassroots event to a celebration that brings together thousands of musicians, artists and fans. The festival is held in Princes Island Park and its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere makes it a great spot in the sun while enjoying some quality folk music.

Want to keep the music playing? Head to Studio Bell, where the new National Music Centre hosts regular exhibitions and concerts.

    Green city

Though it’s a relatively short drive to the legendary Rocky Mountains, Calgary itself is also filled in greenery.

A comprehensive network of urban pathways offers walkers and cyclists an urban oasis and an eco-friendly way to get around the city’s neighborhoods. Take a slow walk or cycle downtown along the riverside or walk across the futuristic Peace Bridge to explore the urban villageof Kensington. Alternatively, take in the scenic views and sunshine by rafting(乘筏) down the mighty Bow River instead.

    From farm to patio

Calgary is home to a farm-to-table scene. Discover the whitewashed brick walls and nose-to-tail philosophy in the Model Milk, while plant-lined ceilings and a vegetable menu await in bright and airy Ten Foot Henry.

Calgarians take their beer as seriously as their steak and it wouldn’t be summer in Calgary without a good patio-hopping session. Start off at 17th Avenue institution The Ship & Anchor, then make your way to Cold Garden. Don't fancy walking? Explore the city’s craft-beer scene by bike with Urban Pedal Tours.

  • 22、House work might seem a drag, but researchers have suggested tasks like dusting, sweeping floors and washing the windows might help adults to stay healthy into old age. Writing in the journal BMJ Open, a Singapore-based team of researchers said regular physical activity “improves physical and mental health, and relieves the risks and effects of chronic diseases among older adults”.

The team randomly chose adults from the town of Yishun in Singapore, and asked them to complete cognitive function tests as well as activities to assess their physical capabilities, such as standing up from a chair as quickly as they could. Participants were also quizzed on their levels of physical activity, including the amount of light housework and heavy housework they did, and were assessed for their risk of having a fall based on measures such as knee extension strength. The study involved 249 participants aged 21-64 and 240 participants aged 65- 90. Most of those who reported doing high levels of heavy or light housework were women.

After taking into account factors including age and sex, the team found cognitive scores and attention scores were 8% and 14% higher respectively for older adults doing high amounts of heavy housework— on average 131 minutes a week— compared with low levels, which appeared to amount to none at all. Sit-to-stand times were lower for older adults reporting high amounts of heavy housework compared with low amounts, while they were also assessed as being at lower risk of having a fall.

Dr Shiou-Liang Wee, the co-author of the research, said health messaging on staying active should not just be about recreational physical activities. “Housework is a purposeful activity performed by many older adults. Independent of recreation, commuting and other work-related physical activity, heavy housework is linked to sharper memory and better falls protection in older adults,” he said.

    【1】What does the team find?

A.Housework is a drag to the aged.

B.Health is connected with regular exercise.

C.Only doing housework can the aged stay healthy.

D.Regular physical activity is dangerous for the aged.

【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The research procedure.

    B.The research result.

    C.The research purpose.

    D.The research institution.

【3】What was considered in the study?

    A.Intelligence and age.

    B.Education and sex.

    C.Age and sex.

    D.Family and income.

【4】What may Shiou-Liang Wee agree with?

A.Commuting is linked to sharper memory.

    B.Heavy housework equals recreational activity.

C.People only need recreational physical activity for health.

D.Recreational physical activity shouldn’t replace housework.

  • 23、   “Buzz. Buzz. The queen is that way,” said one honey bee to another. “Pass it on.” Honey bees can’t speak, of course, but scientists have found that the insects combine teamwork and chemicals to relay the queen’s location to the rest of the community, revealing an extraordinary means of long distance, mass communication.

Individual honey bees communicate with the chemical called pheromones, which scientists have long known. But just how these individual signals work together to gather tens of thousands of bees around a queen has remained a mystery.

In the new study, Dieu My Nguyen, a scientist at the University of Colorado, and his colleagues focused on a colony of western honey bees, the most common honey bee species in the world. The researchers set up a flat, pizza box–size arena with a transparent ceiling, in which the bees could walk around, but not fly. They put the queen bee into a cage on one side and released the worker honey bees on the other. The scientists then recorded the insects’ movements from above with a camera and an AI software tracking bees that were releasing pheromones.

Once the first worker honey bees located the queen, they began to gather chains of evenly spaced bees that extended outward from the queen, with each bee sending out pheromones to its neighbor down the line. The findings are the first direct observations of this collective communication in honey bees. Like smelly bread crumbs, the branching communication lines guided far-off honey bees back to the queen’s location — a feat no single bee could achieve alone.

Mark Carroll, an insect biologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, cautions that the work was done in a closed, practically 2D space. In reality, he notes, honey bee colonies are 3D, and they often have to fight with elements like wind and rain, which make communicating more complicated. “The next step will be to observe natural honey bee swarms and see if they’re actually doing this.” he says.

【1】What is the focus of the new study?

A.Why worker bees gather around a queen bee.

    B.How pheromones function in a bee’s body.

C.Why insects’ mass communication is limited to short distances.

D.How the queen’s location is passed on to the rest of the colony.

【2】What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?

    A.The process of the experiment.

B.The equipment required for the experiment.

C.The technique used in the experiment.

D.The species chosen for the experiment.

【3】What does the underlined word “feat” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Direction.

    B.Movement.

    C.Location.

    D.Relay.

【4】What’s Mark Carroll’s attitude to the study?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Reliable.

    C.Realistic.

    D.Influential.

  • 24、   Using a computer used to mean clicking at a mouse. Then it meant tapping on a touchscreen. Increasingly, it means simply speaking. A smartphone’s voice assistant processes 25 billion requests a month.

One group, though, has been left behind. The World Health Organisation counts 430 million people as deaf or hard of hearing. Many use sign languages to communicate. Normally, they cannot use those languages to talk to computers. 【1】

People have tried to teach computers to understand sign languages. There have been plenty of claims of breakthroughs in recent years. So-called solutions range from special gloves that capture the wearer’s finger movements to software that detects distinct hand shapes. 【2】 In practical contexts, no case of feasibility is evident. Deaf people are more than ever disassociated from digital community.

It is easy to see why. Gloves are similar to body-worn cameras. Both require users to adapt to the needs of hearing people. Hand-shape recognition, while useful, cannot by itself handle the full complexity of sign languages. Some projects have been complimented as offering cheap alternatives to human interpreters in places like hospitals, police stations or classrooms. 【3】

But things are improving. Research groups, which increasingly include deaf scientists, are asking how technology can best serve deaf people’s interests. Students of sign languages are compiling databases, known as corpora, full of examples of how the sign languages are used. Programmers are trying to turn them into useful products.

As with spoken languages, sign languages possess their own grammar, idioms and dialects. Again like spoken languages, the hard-and-fast rules of grammar books do not really capture the subtleties of everyday usage. Single signs can be shorthand for complex ideas. Like speakers, signers often take shortcuts, such as representing two-handed signs with a single hand. 【4】 Therefore, ways to get them easily across are vital to true understanding and communication.

A.They are criticized for somewhat sacrificing formality for conveniences.

B.These solutions, despite certain disadvantages, serve, in a way, as answers to the deaf people’s urgent needs.

C.They face the risk of being excluded from the digitalization that is taking over everyday life.

D.However, the cost of even small errors can be very high.

E.Correctly interpreting all these is much harder than recognizing spoken syllables or written letters.

F.They have won applause while isolating the very people for whom they are designed.
