21、Having worked for more than a decade in finance in the oil industry in Canada, Tori Fahey found herself wanting more from life. But it wasn't through desperation that her circumstances changed: “I didn't get fed up and storm off, nothing like that; it was curiosity about other interests and wanting to experience something new.”
Fahey left her job and completed an MBA before setting up a move to New York to begin a degree. However, the opportunity of an open year between the MBA and the degree came up, and as a keen touring cyclist, Fahey realised that a much dreamed-about adventure was now becoming a possibility: "The ride in Africa had been on my fantasy list. It was a moment when I realised that I could do anything, so I should."
Fahey rode across Africa, a 7,500-mile trip that took four months. The whole experience had a life-changing impact. Fahey said: “Bicycles provide a literal freedom. You don't allow yourself to feel like that in everyday life because there are so many distractions. But when you' re out on the bike and there's nothing else, you' re really free to experience what life is.”
Post-degree, Fahey worked on projects with the UNDP(United Nations Development Project) in Montenegro with the aim of bringing investment to rural communities.
It was while working on these projects that the seeds were sown for the next new investment. “It was through my trip across Africa that I discovered pannier and rack systems inconvenient and I was never going to use them again.” Little did she know this would lead her to start up her own company.
In 2013, Apidura was born, producing storage solutions for people looking to travel the world by bike, race across continents and carry all they need to do so. It's now a successful global brand, but Fahey remains reflective about what else the company can do for people.

22、 Researchers at Ohio State University report that they have been able to recover the sense of a research participant’s hand with a severe spinal cord injury using a brain-computer interface (BCI) system. The technology applies neural signals to the participant, resulting in greatly improved motor function.
The participant in this study is Ian Burkhart, a 28-year-old man who suffered a spinal cord injury during a diving accident in 2010. Since 2014, Burkhart has been working with researchers on a project that aims to recover the function of his right arm. The system they have developed works through a system of electrodes on his skin and a small computer chip inserted into his motor cortex (the brain area that influences motor movements). This setup, which uses wires to route movement signals from the brain to the muscles, bypassing his spinal cord injury, gives Burkhart enough control over his right arm and hand to lift a coffee cup, pick up a credit card, and play Guitar Hero.
The advances in the BCI system led to important improvements. They enable Burkhart to reliably recognize something by touch alone. The system is also the first BCI that allows for recovery of movement and touch at once, and this ability to experience increased touch during movement gives him a greater sense of control and lets him do things more quickly. Finally, these improvements allow the BCI system to sense how much pressure to use when it is handling an object or picking something up.
The researchers are working on creating a next-generation sleeve containing the required electrodes and sensors that could be easily put on and taken off. They also want to improve the system that can be controlled with a tablet rather than a computer, making it smaller and much easier to carry around.

A.Protecting people’s spinal cord.
B.Improving one’s motor function.
C.Helping one’s hand regain its sense.
D.Preventing severe spinal cord injuries.
【2】How did the new system help Ian Burkhart’s right hand lift a coffee cup?
A.By building up his body muscles through electrodes.
B.By recovering the function of his injured spinal cord.
C.By inserting a computer chip into his injured spinal cord.
D.By sending movement signals directly to his arm muscles.
【3】What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.The advantages of the improved BCI system.
B.The improvement the BCI system needed.
C.The doubt about improving the BCI system.
D.The principles of improving the BCI system.
【4】In what aspect will the researchers improve the BCI system?
A.Its stability.

23、 A new UBC Okanagan study finds children not only gain the benefits of working with therapy (治疗) dogs – they enjoy it too.
“While we do frequently see children improve in therapy dog programs, we didn’t have data to support that they enjoyed the time as well,” says Nicole Harris, who conducted this research while a master’s student in the School of Education.
The research saw 22 children from the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club take part in a series of sessions to help them build their social skills. Over six weeks, the children were accompanied by therapy dogs as they completed lessons. Each week the children were taught a new skill, such as introducing themselves or giving directions to others. The children would first practice with their assigned therapy dog before running through the exercise with the rest of the group. In the final phase, the children, accompanied by their new furry friend, would practice their new skills with university students located in the building.
“Therapy dogs are often able to reach children and facilitate their growth in surprising ways. We saw evidence of this in the social skills of children when they were paired with a therapy dog,” says Dr. John-Tyler Binfet, associate professor in the School of Education and director of BARK. “The dogs helped create a non-threatening climate while the children were learning these new skills. By interacting with them, the children’s moods improved and their engagement in their lessons increased. ” While the children were learning and practising their new skills, the research team collected data.
At the end of the six weeks, Harris interviewed eight children, aged 5 to 11 years old, who regularly attended the sessions. Each child indicated the social skill-training program with therapy dogs was an enjoyable and positive experience and the dogs were a meaningful and essential part of the program.
As a full-time elementary school teacher, Harris notes that schools have become increasingly important in helping students develop social and emotional skills, and this research could contribute to the development of future school-based or after-school programs.
【1】What was Harris’s research meant to explore?
A.When and how children could learn new social skills well.
B.Whether working with therapy dogs was pleasant to kids.
C.Why therapy dogs benefited kids’ learning of social skills.
D.What helped children learn and practice new social skills.
【2】What does the underlined word “facilitate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Promote.
B.Maintain.
C.Influence.
D.Determine.
【3】How was the research conducted?
A.The behavior of 22 children aged 5 to 11 was recorded.
B.The participants were taught a skill and tested 6 weeks later.
C.University students were also involved to help with the study.
D.Most participants were interviewed at the end of the research.
【4】What does Harris think of the research?
A.It’s an important part of elementary school education.
B.It should be carried out in elementary school separately.
C.It can help develop students’ social and emotional skills.
D.It serves as reference for developing school programs.
24、 Scientists have long known a fairly reliable way to extend life span in rodents(啮齿类动物) and other lab animals: Reduce the amount of calories they eat by 10 percent to 40 percent.
This strategy known as caloric restriction, has been shown to increase the life span of various organisms and reduce their rate of cancer and other age-related ailments. Whether it can do the same in people has been an open question. But an intriguing new study suggests that in young and middle-aged adults, chronically(慢性地) restricting calorie intake can have an impact on their health.
In the new study, researchers looked at a group of 143 healthy men and women who were instructed to practice caloric restriction for two years, with the aim of cutting the calories they consumed by 25 percent.
On average, the dieters managed to slash about 12 percent of their total calories, or roughly 300 calories a day, the amount in a few chocolate chip cookies or a small Starbucks Mocha. But the group saw many of their health markers improve.
They lost weight and body fat. Their blood pressure fell slightly, and they had better blood sugar control and less inflammation. At the same time, a control group of 75 healthy people who did not practice caloric restriction saw no improvements in any of these markers. Some of the benefits in the calorie restricted group stemmed from the fact that they lost a large amount of weight. However, the results of the survey suggest that caloric restriction might have some unique biological effects on disease pathways in the body.
Calorie restriction may be a useful tool for better health and weight loss, but it’s unclear whether the changes in the new study will ultimately translate into longevity and reductions in chronic disease, said Frank Hu, the chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard, who was not involved in the research.
【1】What happened to the lab animals, after the amount of calories was reduced?
A.More lab animals got cancers.
B.More Lab animals can live longer.
C.Health condition of lab animals got worse.
D.Lab animals will suffer from no disease in their future life.
【2】From the study, after caloric restriction, what happened to the 143 people?
A.Their healthy markers improved.
B.They did not get chronic diseases.
C.They did not get lose any weight at all.
D.They did not eat chocolate chip cookies.
【3】Which work has the similar meaning to the underline word, slash?
A.Reduce. B.Increase.
C.Add. D.Beat.
【4】From Frank Hu’s words, what can be inferred?
A.Calorie restriction is beneficial to weight loss.
B.People with caloric restriction will love longer than others.
C.More people should be encouraged to take caloric restriction in life.
D.The relation between caloric restriction and longer lifespan is uncertain.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar(项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost—and—found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience(良心)was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.
