21、The World Economic Forum predicts the global population will hit 9.8 billion by 2050, which means we might need to grow as much as double the amount of food we do today and do it without significantly consuming limited resources such as land and water.
But there are reasons to be positive. Historically, human intelligence has risen to the population challenge. 8,000 years ago in the first agricultural revolution, the plough (犁) transformed productivity. In the 1 800s, inventions such as the seed drill brought a degree of mechanization to farming. Then, in the mid-20th century, there were major breakthroughs in artificial fertilizer and plant science.
Now, we are entering a fourth age of agriculture. Innovation is exploding. The digital transformation of agriculture is not theory. It’s real. And it’s having a huge impact across all aspects of farming.
In April 2020, Chinese drone (无人机) maker XAG organized a rice seeding demonstration in Guangdong province. First, it invited two workers to spread 5kg of rice seeds the traditional way- by wading across 1,200 square metres of waterlogged field. The laborious process took 25 minutes. Then it unleashed (释放) its XAG XPlanet drone on the same task. The unmanned aerial system followed a pre-programmed route and threw rice seeds from the air. It completed the job in 120 seconds. XAG claims its system can use up to 90 per cent less water and 30 percent fewer chemicals than traditional technique.
Barcelona-based startup Faromatics has also attracted a lot of attention for its EU-funded invention: a robot called the ChickenBoy. It lets chicken farmers autonomously monitor their stock. The robot glides along the ceiling and uses a set of sensors to measure temperature, air quality, light and sound in poultry housing. Farmers can use a cloud platform to set the ChiekenBoy to send mobile alerts.
The task of feeding 9.8 billion mouths by 2050 is one of the greatest facing humanity, but thanks to technology, there is good reason to be confident for the future.

22、A well-dressed man came to a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl for his wife’s birthday. The price didn’t matter. Since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a nice black one that cost $5000, he paid for the pearl in cash, shook hands with the jeweler, and left.
A few days later the man returned and said that his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality, because she wanted a pair of earrings made, “Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl? ” said the man. The jeweler regretfully replied, “I would say it’s exactly impossible to find one exactly like that pearl.”
The rich man insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspapers, offering $ 25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the advertisement but nobody had a pearl that was just right.
Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his store. To his great surprise, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse. “I don’t like to part with it,” she said sadly, “I got it from my mother, and my mother from hers. But I really need the money. ”

23、The World Health Organization has for the first time expressed “cautions optimism” that the growth in new Ebola cases in West Africa may be slowing down.
Bruce Aylward, who is in charge of the WHO response to Ebola, said in Geneva that he was particularly encouraged by evidence of a downward trend in Liberia, one of the three worst-affected countries.
The WHO’s official total number of Ebola cases has reached 13.703—a big jump from the10,141 cases it reported four days ago. But Dr Aylward said that was mainly the result of the data being updated with old cases, rather than new cases arising.
“Do we feel confident that the response is now getting an upper hand on the virus? Yes, we are seeing a slowing rate of new cases, very definitely.” Dr Aylward said.
However, Dr Aylward also urged people not to celebrate prematurely over any apparent downturn in the epidemic(传染病). “I’m terrified that the information will be misinterpreted and people will think Ebola is under control.” he said.
Any reduction in the battle against the virus might lead to “an oscillating(震荡的)pattern where the disease moves up and down”.
The improvement in Liberia seems to be due to a combination of more treatment facilities, better contact tracing and safer burial practices, together leading to fewer new infections from Ebola patients.
In Sierra Leone the number of cases continues to increase in some areas. “We’re still seeing this thing burning quite hot in parts of Sierra Leone,” Dr Aylward said
Tracing the progress of individual patients, the WHO estimates an overall death rate of 70 percent, though people who receive treatment in a well-equipped clinic are slightly less likely to die. The WHO plans to set up 56 Ebola clinics with 4,700 beds in West Africa. Of these 15 clinics with 1,050 beds are already operational and another 22 clinics are expected to open during November.
Meanwhile, two former NATO(北约)secretaries-general and dozens of leading European politicians have urged the alliance to send troops, aircraft and ships to west Africa to help contain the Ebola crisis.
【1】In the first paragraph, “cautious optimism” probably refers to ________.
A. Ebola under control thanks to WHO’s caution
B. the decline of new Ebola cases though not defeated
C. celebrations on the downturn in Ebola in Liberia
D. More treatment and relief supplies to West Africa
【2】Why did Dr Aylward urge people not to celebrate prematurely?
A. Because celebrations may increases infections.
B. Because the pattern of the disease is up and down.
C. Because people may be misled to cease the battle.
D. Because we are getting an upper hand on the virus.
【3】Which of the following didn’t contribute to the improvement in Liberia?
A. better contact tracing B. more treatment facilities
C. safer burial practices D. data updated with old cases
【4】According to the text, “burning quite hot” means ________.

C. on fire D. well received
24、Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments.
In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.
Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.
Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), are open to new experiences, and adopt a never-say-die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck.
【1】What’s the purpose of the author’s research?
A.To discover what luck means to people.
B.To find lucky people and unlucky people.
C.To distinguish between good luck and bad luck.
D.To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky.
【2】Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment?
A.There was too much information to be read in detail.
B.They were too focused on looking for photographs.
C.It took too much time to go through newspapers.
D.The words were too small to be noticed.
【3】What leads to lucky people’s good fortune?
A.Their ability to spot opportunities.
B.Their ability to become relaxed.
C.Their ability to communicate.
D.Their ability to make friends.
【4】What’s the key message of the last paragraph?
A.What lucky people are looking for.
B.How lucky people generate good luck.
C.What lucky people can do with opportunities.
D.How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck.
