21、Britain is launching the world’s largest ever clinical trial of the Galleri test, which picks up pieces of genetic code from DNA before symptoms such as lumps (肿块) appear. The test is a game-changer for early cancer detection, which can detect more than 50 types of the disease in the very early stages. It has been developed by GRAIL, a healthcare company focusing on early cancer detection.
National Health Service (NHS) chief executive Amanda Pritchard said, “This quick and simple blood test could mark the beginning of a revolution in cancer detection and treatment here and around the world. By finding cancer before signs and symptoms appear, we have the best chance of treating it and we can give people the best chance of survival.
NHS has sent out invites across the country offering the test to 140,000 people aged 50 to 77 with no cancer symptoms. Another 6,000 with suspected signs have been offered to speed up their diagnosis (诊断). Blood samples will be taken at mobile clinics in retail parks and community locations. Laboratory analysis produces a result in a fortnight. Each test costs € 620 but NHS has negotiated a discounted price. Half the participants will have their blood screened with the Galleri test right away and samples from the rest will be stored and tested in the future. This will allow scientists to compare the stage at which any tumours (肿瘤) are detected between the two groups.
“The Galleri test can not only detect a wide range of cancer types but can also predict where the cancer is in the body with a high degree of accuracy. Earlier trial results showed it can detect 68% of 12 deadly cancers,” Health Secretary Sajid Javid said. In England 56% of cancers are diagnosed at stage one or two. NHS aims to increase that to three quarters by 2028. If found early there are a broader range of treatment options available, which can be curative and are often less aggressive.

22、In 2016, in an Illinois town called Cahokia, a woman was sent to prison just because she failed to tend her lawn (草坪). In 2019, a Florida man was fined $30,000 by the city of Dunedin for allowing his grass to grow more than 10 inches in height. These examples, while extreme, are not rare occurrence in America.
A study estimated that turf grasses (lawns, parks, athletic fields, etc) cover over 40 million acres in the continental U.S., an area larger than any crop area. And Americans spend as much as $60 billion a year maintaining these grasses. These impressive data are the result of Americans’ setting much store by these pieces of greenery for several centuries.
Centuries ago, only those with considerable wealth could own the resources needed to maintain these displays. In the modern world, lawns have gradually changed from the estates of the wealthy to the front yards of common people. Across America, millions of families now proudly present their grass to their neighbors and drivers by carefully weeding, watering, fertilizing and mowing these small-scale representations of the grounds.
With this context in mind, it’s easy to see well-tended lawns in America. People tend to use lawns to create an impression of order or to indicate a sense of personal success. The relative health and attractiveness of the grass in their yard becomes a barometer (晴雨表) for their life as whole.
However, with so many acres covered by the grass, the influence associated with lawn maintenance is more than just psychological. To begin, a lawn requires massive quantities of resources to sustain. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that lawns account for about half of homeowner’s water use, much of which is wasted. Additionally, Americans are reported to use 80 million pounds of chemicals on their lawns each year. The process of tending the lawn also contributes to air pollution.
These surprising data mean we need to question whether lawns provide us with enough benefit to justify their widespread existence.
【1】Why are the two lawn-related cases mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To explain the effectiveness of American laws
B.To show the significance of lawns in American society.
C.To stress Americans’ awareness of environmental protection.
D.To reveal the cost of maintaining lawns in Americans’ daily life.
【2】What does the underlined part in the second paragraph mean?
A.Making full use of.
B.Facing the consequence of.
C.Attaching great importance to.
D.Shouldering the responsibility for.
【3】Why do Americans have a preference for well-tended lawns?
A.Because of the psychological function of lawns.
B.Because of the popularity of lawns in Americans’ life
C.Because of the purpose of placing barometers in lawns.
D.Because of the method of planting healthy and attractive lawns.
【4】What can we know about the lawns in the U.S. according to the passage?
A.They will be expanded to cover more lands.
B.They are of significant environmental concerns.
C.They will motivate people to be health-conscious.
D.They can promote the development of the chemical industry.
23、Teenagers are the most dangerous drivers on the road, and car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens. But there’s one simple way to keep kids safe: Don’t give teens a car they consider their own.
Teenagers who reported that they were the main person driving a vehicle, rather than sharing it with other family members, were more than twice as likely to be involved in a crash. One in four drivers with primary access to a car had had an accident while driving in the past year, compared with 1 in 10 for shared access. That means 25 percent of the kids driving their “own” cars had at least one accident last year! The teens with their own car also were more likely to use a cell phone while driving (78 percent, compared with 55 percent) and to speed (70 percent vs 54 percent). These figures come from a survey of 2167 teenagers by researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It is said to be the first to look at whether having primary access to a car affects safety for teenage drivers.
What makes driving a family car safer? Maybe it’s as simple as knowing that it’s the family’s car. I’m sure the realization that it wasn’t “my” car made me more sorry-and more careful.
Many parents are excited when their teenager is finally driving, and many teens need to drive themselves to school or work. As a result, it’s easy for parents to think that a new driver needs a car. Indeed, the researchers found that 70 percent of the teenagers said that they had their “own” car. This is dangerous, and parents should consider delaying giving a child a car at least until the teenager has been driving for a year.
Children who have strict parents were 50 percent less likely to have had a crash in the past year, compared with parents whose style is permissive. The advice: Don’t be afraid to set rules for safe driving behavior, and take the keys if those rules aren’t followed. In fact, making your teenager say, “Mom, can I have the car keys?” may be one of the simplest and best ways to keep your child safe.

24、Recent years saw a great number of people living in cities fleeing from crowded apartments for wide-open spaces. Escaping the cold was the excuse for some, while most others chased a cheaper cost of living. Here are the best cities for lowering your cost of living without sacrificing lifestyle in the future.
Nashville, TN
People will not be disappointed with Nashville’s nightlife and the bar scenes; the town is home to many creative transplants from faraway places as well, making finding new friends an exciting possibility. While the city’s cooking scene is most known for barbecue, Nashville also boasts restaurants such as Graze, Wild Cow, and Vegelicious, with tons of plant-based plates you won’t want to miss.
Annapolis, MD
If you thought Miami was the sailing capital of the United States, you guessed wrong! That title goes to a little town on the Chesapeake Bay that has lots of history and charm too. The home of the U. S. Naval Academy has some of the best seafood on the eastern seaboard; the crab cakes along City Dock have a reputation across the stale.
Milwaukee, WI
If you have your heart set on Chicago, consider the cheaper Milwaukee instead. You can live closer to the shore for half of Chicago — and you’ll certainly still get those white Christmases, assuming that it’s not the snow you’ re running from.
Las Vegas, NV
Hear us out. Average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is around $1,250 per month, with a luxury spot coming in around $3,000 per month. Moreover, Vegas has over 300 days of sunny weather. And with easy access to 10 Michlin-starred restaurants and world-class shows, you might come for the savings — but you’ll stay for the rich lifestyle.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The excitement about Thanksgiving was really building. Grandma arrived with a homemade pecan pie. Dad was searching for his electric carving knife. Mama was in the kitchen humming a song. Little baby Lonnie bounced up and down. Dad smelled the air and sighed. My big brother, Slim, who was anything but slim, sneaked off to his room with a slice of the pecan pie. Even our dog Fido was wagging his tail.
Having set a pretty table, Mama looked up, smiling. “Help me carry in the food,” she said. Slim, who had come out of his room by this time, went racing into the kitchen. " I'll get it! I'll get it!” The rest of us piled in behind him, everyone grabbing a dish. Then we watched Dad carry in the biggest, brownest, best-smelling turkey we had ever seen with Mama's hand under the plate, just in case. Together they lowered the turkey to its place at the table.
It was the tradition in our family to think of something for which we were most thankful. We all ran to the table yelling something like “I'm thankful for school being out” or “I'm thankful for pecan pie!” All eyes were on that enormous turkey as we took our seats.
Yes, everything was perfect except for one thing. On that special day, it was Dad who sat at the head of the table and carved the turkey. It was an honor that he had eagerly expected for days. Mama always called Dad a clumsy ox. He frequently tripped (绊倒) over his own two feet, and he could drop just about anything.
We automatically eased back when Dad tested the electric carving knife in the air. Dad went to work on the white meat first with surprisingly few problems. Slice after slice landed neatly on the plate with thick gravy (肉汁)。Dad leaned forward and grabbed the end of the left turkey leg and cut it off, placing it whole on the plate. His oily fingers shone brightly in the light of the chandelier (大吊灯),and Mama waved her napkin. “I'm all right, Mama,” he said. “I'm all right. ”
