22、Researchers at the University of Helsinki recently examined hyperactivity (过分好动) and inattention in more than 11, 000 Finnish pet dogs. They found that the dog’s age and gender, as well as exposure to other dogs, played a part.
“We wanted to collect a large behavioral data of dogs to better understand behavior problems that are common in our companion dogs. We studied seven characteristics: noise sensitivity, fearfulness, fear of surfaces and heights, inattention, compulsive behavior, separation – related behavior, and aggression,” says Sini Sulkama, a researcher at the University of Helsinki.
Their goal was to identify demographic (人口统计的), environmental, and behavioral risk factors that could influence these anxiety - related characteristics in dogs. Their analysis showed that hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention were more common in young dogs and male dogs. They also found some major differences among breeds.
Interestingly, researchers discovered that the owner’s experience with dogs also had an impact. They found that hyperactivity and impulsivity are more common in dogs that aren’t their owners’ first dogs. “We can only conclude the possible relationship between these factors, but one possible explanation is that people try to choose easy individuals from less active breeds, like companion dog breeds as their first dogs,” says Sulkama.
They also calculated the urban environmental score for each dog. That describes how the land is used around the dog’s current home, breaking it down into artificial surface, agricultural areas, forests, and semi natural areas.
Although it might seem like most dogs are easily distracted to some extent, studies suggest that about 15% of dogs display high levels of hyperactivity and 20% show high levels of inattention. Researchers say they can make it easier to identify and treat dogs’ hyperactivity and inattention and may benefit the research. They can also be helpful when choosing to add a dog to the family. You might want to adopt a pet with the characteristics of a breed that matches your lifestyle.
【1】What’s one of the factors causing dogs’ hyperactivity?
A.Their noise sensitivity.
B.Their owners’ character,
C.Their aggressive behavior.

【4】What is the purpose of the study?
A.To understand dogs’ behavioral problems.
B.To collect a large behavioral data of dogs.

23、 The Maya city of Tikal is famous for its amazing palaces and temples. But something far more ordinary kept Tikal functioning: its water-purifying(净化) system, the earliest known of its kind.
Researchers recently discovered a volcanic mineral that traps microbes(微生物) and heavy metals in Tikal's largest reservoir(水库). Because the material is not found nearby, the finding suggests the presence of a man-made water-purifying device.
The finding denies the long-standing idea that the ancient worlds technological achievements belonged to the Eastern world, like Egypt, and China. The leading scientist of this research, Kenneth Tankersley says, “When talking about purifying water, the Maya were thousands of years ahead.”
Located in the forests of Central America, Tikal, is thought to have been home to more than 45,000 people. They had to struggle against a dry season lasting from November through April. Storing water in reservoirs was a solution, but that water had to be fit to drink, said Kenneth, “Keeping water clean was of great importance.”
A few years ago, the researchers were surprised to find that the largest reservoir, Corriental, had significantly fewer harmful chemicals than the others. “The water quality at Corriental was much higher.”
Somehow the Maya must have been purifying Corriental’s water, the team assumed. “The Maya used gardens as their bathrooms.” Kenneth said, “The water coming into the reservoir would not have been very clean.”
At the bottom of Corriental, scientists found four separate layers(层), each a few centimeters thick, of millimeter-scale “zeolites(沸石)”. This type of volcanic mineral can purify water and is still in widespread use today, Kenneth says, “Just about everything we drink, from bottled water to wine, runs through a zeolite purifying device.”
The Maya wouldn’t have known about the zeolite in rock, but they would have recognized the purifying effects, the researchers suggest. A zeolite-rich rock formation about 30 kilometers northeast of Tikal is the likely source of the material in Corriental reservoir, the team said last month in Scientific Reports. Water at this site “was clear and tasted good.”
【1】What did the researchers find?
A.A new material called zeolites. B.The purifying effects of zeolites.
C.An old water-purifying system. D.High-quality water in Corriental.
【2】How did the Maya purify water?
A.By building the largest reservoir. B.By using gardens as their bathrooms.
C.By getting rid of heavy metals. D.By spreading four layers of zeolites.
【3】What can we learn from the research?
A.The Maya drank bottled water. B.The ancient Maya were very bright.
C.The system was created by accident. D.The zeolites were found in Corriental.
【4】According to Kenneth,________.
A.the original water in Corriental was not clean enough
B.water supply in Tikal lasted from November to April
C.all ancient technological achievements belonged to the East
D.the Maya had a good understanding of the zeolite in rocks
24、Men hunted.Women gathered. But the discovery of a woman buried 9,000 years ago in the Andes Mountains with weapons and hunting tools challenges this widely accepted view. The woman, thought to be between 17 and 19 years old when she died, was buried with items that suggested she hunted big-game animals by spear (矛) throwing.
The objects accompanying people in death tend to be those that accompanied them in life. Although some scholars have suggested a role for women in ancient hunting, others have dismissed this idea even when hunting tools were uncovered in female burials.
To examine whether this woman found at this site was an exception, the researchers examined 429 skeletons at 107 burial sites from around 8,000 to 14,000 years ago. Of those, 27 individuals were buried with hunting tools—11 were female and 15 were male. The sample was sufficient to “justify the conclusion that female participation in early big-game hunting was likely nontrivial,” said lead study author Haas.
The findings add to doubts about “man-the-hunter” assumption about early humans since the mid-20th century. That theory assumes that it was men who went out and hunted, bringing home meat to feed women and children, who were responsible for gathering berries, plants and nuts to enrich the dict.
But recent research suggests hunting was very much a community-based activity, needing the participation of all able-bodied individuals to drive large animals, the study said. Meanwhile, the spears used at that time had low accuracy, encouraging participation, and using it was a skill learned from childhood. Women may also have been freed from child care demands by “allo-parenting”—raising children was a job shared by many.
“Our findings have made me rethink the most basic organizational structure of ancient hunter-gatherer groups, and human groups more generally,” Haas said.
【1】The discovery of the buried woman shows ________.
A.she was killed by a big-game animal

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 11:30 a.m, and the fishing so far had been fruitless. Not another boat in sight. Andrew Sherman spotted a speck (斑点) on the horizon. As the speck approached, it started to look like a boat. “Jack,” he yelled to his son. “A boat headed straight at us!” Unbelievable. Miles of open ocean, and this boat was on course to T-bone them.
The Shermans stared at the interloper (闯入者) in surprise. Four fishing lines out, music blaring, except there wasn’t a soul in sight. The captain must have gone below, leaving his boat sailing along at 10 mph.
“Follow it, Jack,” Andrew said.
Jack hit the gas. “Hey! Hey!” the Shermans shouted. Nothing. A horrifying new thought took shape: The captain had gone below, all right—and suffered a heart attack.
Father and son switched places, and Andrew drove their boat alongside the other while Jack jumped onto the other boat’s deck, bringing the boat to a stop. Then he ventured down into the cabin. He came back up a moment later. “Empty,” he said.
“It’s a ghost boat!” said father and son nearly at the same time.
Andrew called the Coast Guard. “Man overboard,” he told them. The two men could have left it, but they were curious: What happened to the captain? The boat’s GPS system told them the missing captain had marked points along his route indicating good fishing spots. Then the points suddenly stopped a few miles back.
With Andrew driving the ghost boat and Jack driving their own craft, they headed for that last point. They were searching for what they feared would be a body.
What they didn’t know was that the ghost boat’s owner was alive in the water and growing worn out.
Two hours earlier, Sascha Scheller had been fishing when nature called. He leaned over to relieve himself, zipped up, turned back toward the helm (舵柄), and slipped.
