  • 21、Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh

The Centre’s ethos(价值观)is summed up nicely by the old Scottish proverb, “The story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart.” The main draw is its programme of spoken- word performances, most of which take place in its 100- seat basement theatre. The storytelling does not just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large airy room used for exhibitions, workshops as well as a monthly story session for tots (Tiny Tales for one-to-three-year-olds).

    Exit through the gift shop?

No gift shop! Better than that, the centre has an independent bookshop, which specialises in myths and folk stories. Many are classics passed down from generation to generation , although contemporary material also abounds(大量存在). Kids’ books are plentiful. Contemporary highlights include Lari Don’s Serpents and Werewovles and Janis Mackay’s The Selkie Girl. Also worth a look is Animals, Beasties and Monsters of Scotland by Lea Taylor, which forms part of The History Press’s superb compilation(编纂) of regional Scottish folk stories. There are also Scots’ versions of Harry Potter, as well as Roald Dahl’s The Twins.

    Getting there?

The centre is in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town,at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. It is a five- minute walk from Waverley railway station. Driving in the city centre is to be avoided; the nearest bus stops are on the High Street and North Bridge. For more information, visit Lothian Buses.

    Value for money?

Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free, although all the theatre performances are ticketed. Prices for shows vary, with the average around£8 for adults and£6 for children. Cafe Voices, the centre's monthly storytelling night ,is£5.

    Opening hours

10 am-6 pm from Mondays to Saturdays; Sunday (July and August only). Last entry: 5:30 pm.

  • 22、Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.

According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1, 715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.

In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine what places could see us.

The team looked at 331, 312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1, 715 of them could see Earth within the last 5, 000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5, 000 years.

“When I look up at the sky, it looks a bit more amiable because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.

If a planet circling around one of those 1, 715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.

Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?

It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably not exist anymore.

Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange” emails and TikTok videos”.

“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.

【1】Which word can best describe Lisa Kalteneggeri’s attitude towards the sky that he looked up at?

    A.Objective.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Critical.

    D.Positive.

【2】What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 6 refer to?

A.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.

    B.Advanced life.

    C.The oxygen on Earth.

    D.Human- made radio waves.

【3】What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?

A.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.

    B.Aliens don’t exist.

    C.They cannot understand each other.

D.It takes a long time for messages to travel.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To present new findings published in a study.

B.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.

C.To raise readers’ interest in aliens.

D.To explain how messages travel between different star systems.

What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing

In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russ, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment. They decided to furnish their apartment.

The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions (垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.

When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said, “Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later.”

After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.

However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman’s name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started — what to do? Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner?

The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.
