二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   An increasing part of the world is becoming artificially lit. Artificial light is often seen as a sign of progress: the march of civilization shines a light in the dark; it takes back the night. But some scientists argue that unnaturally bright nights are bad not just for astronomers but also for nocturnal (夜间的) animals and even for human health.

Now research shows the night is getting even brighter. From 2012 to 2016 the earth’s artificially lit area expanded by about 2.2 percent a year, according to a study published last November in Science Advances. However, the measurement does not include light from most of the energy–efficient LED lamps that have been replacing sodium-vapor (钠气灯) technology in cities all over the world ,says Christopher Kyba, a postdoctoral researcher at the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.

The new data came from a NASA satellite instrument called the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIRS). It can measure long wavelengths of light, such as those produced by traditional yellow-and-orange sodium-vapor street lamps. But VIIRS cannot see the short-wavelength blue light produced by white LEDs. This light has been shown to disturb human sleep cycles and nocturnal animals’ behavior.

The team believes the ongoing switch to LEDs caused already bright countries such as Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. to register as having stable levels of lighting in the VIIRS data. In contrast, most nations in South America, Africa and Asia brightened, suggesting increases in the use of traditional lighting.

In 2016, a study showed that one third of the world’s population currently lives under skies too bright to see the Milky Way at night. Between 2012 and 2016 the median nation pumped out 15 percent more long-wavelength light as its GDP increased by 13 percent. Overall, counties' total light production correlated with their GDP.

1Which of the following can best describe artificial light?

    A.Convenient but unnatural. B.Useful but energy-consuming.

C.Progressive but uncomfortable. D.Civilized but harmful.

2What can we know about the already bright countries?

A.Traditional lighting is not used in those countries.

B.LED lights are increasingly used in those countries.

C.Efforts to reduce harmful light work in those countries.

D.People do enjoy stable lighting in those countries.

3Why does the author mention “the median nation” in the last paragraph?

A.To show artificial light has an association with GDP.

B.To demonstrate GDP plays an important part in the median nation.

C.To stress the median nation was to blame for the light problem.

D.To suggest artificial light should be banned in the future.

4Where is the passage most probably taken from?

A.A biology textbook. B.A book review.

C.A science magazine. D.A science fiction.

  • 22、   Recently, the phrase "hair loss" has been trending among young people in China. A recent report on overall health showed that hair loss ranked fifth among top health concerns, following bad skin conditions, depression and anxiety, poor sleep, and digestive tract(消化道)discomfort and illness.

But hair loss isn't just a concern for Chinese youth. It is an inconvenient reality for many people in China and the world over. According to a survey, 250 million Chinese people are troubled by hair loss, most of them between 20 and 40 years old. In the United States, about one in five people is suffering from hair loss.

There isn't really any single reason for hair loss. Humans naturally lose about 50 to 100 hairs each day, which usually regrow later. However, genetic and environmental factors can mean, for some people, these lost hairs won't regrow. In addition, certain factors can further worsen hair loss, including too much stress from work school, too little sleep, and a bad diet.

Is there anything you can do to protect your remaining hair? There are many products out there ready to help you keep a full head of hair. Shampoos, lotions, surgery, even laser-helmets say they can help. Hair loss treatments represent a $3. 6 billion industry in the United States alone. While many of these products make bold promises about their capabilities to restore your hair, the reality is that fixing your hair loss will ultimately depend on finding the specific causes.

If it is due to stress, lack of sleep, or poor nutrition, then a lifestyle change might not only stop hair loss, but also restart the growth of hair. For most young people who want to protect their receding(后移的)hairlines, it starts with their personal health. All they need to do is change unhealthy living habits and pay more attention to their psychological well-being.

1What can we learn about "hair loss" from the passage?

A.It is common among most people in China.

B.It is the top health concern for Chinese youth.

C.Only Chinese youth are suffering from hair loss.

D.It bothers people of different ages and countries

2What stops the regrowth of the lost hairs for some people?

    A.Genetic and environmental factors.

    B.Stress from work and school.

    C.Too little sleep.

    D.A bad diet.

3What's the author's attitude towards many hair loss treatments?

    A.Critical. B.Objective.

    C.Optimistic. D.Supportive.

4What's the author's suggestion to young people with hair loss?

    A.To use hair-growth products.

    B.To change unhealthy lifestyle.

C.To have a health check in hospital

D.To pay attention to physical well-being

  • 24、   Buyer beware: There’s a reason why online ticket sellers hit you with last-second fees. A massive experiment by Berkeley professsor Tadelis with the online ticket marketplace StubHub concluded that “drip pricing”, where additional fees are only disclosed when customers are ready to confirm their purchases, resulted in people spending more. “Websites incorporating ‘hidden fees’ are making more money than they would if they chose to honestly display all fees upfront,” Tadelis said.

The study set out to find out how “drip pricing” affects both the quantity and types of ticket purchases through a large-scale, real-world randomized experiment. For the experiment, StubHub randomly assigned half of all the users to an experimental hidden-fee structure where buyers saw only the ticket list price as they shopped, and extra fees were only displayed on the checkout page, which generally amounted to 15% of the ticket price including shipping. The other half of StubHub users continued to see the all-inclusive prices. This setup allowed Tadelis and his colleagues to compare the choices made by the two groups, such as purchases and clicks towards checkout.

Overall, users who weren’t shown the additional fees upfront spent about 21% more on tickets and were 14% more likely to complete a purchase compared with those who saw all-inclusive prices from the start. Among all those who made purchases, customers in the hidden-fee group bought tickets that were about 5% more expensive than those in the upfront fee group, buying more tickets for seats located closer to the field or the event stage.

The findings raise questions for whether the misinformed consumers have a right to full price disclosure upfront. Professor Tadelis noted that some governments have considered regulating this behavior to increase transparency—Canada, for example, has banned the use of drip pricing for ticket sales. “I can’t think of a good reason to allow this practice in any country as the harm to consumers is clear from our study,” Tadelis said.

【1】Online ticket sellers reveal the extra fees only at the last moment to________.

B.All users could see the additional fees in advance.

C.Shipping fees amount to 15% of the ticket price.

D.Researchers compared the two groups’ choices.

A.It made 14% more customers buy tickets.

B.It helped to increase ticket profits by 5%.
