  • 21、   You may have come across the picture that has a number drawn on the floor with two people standing on either side of the number. One person sees a 6, and the other sees a 9.1

They could either stay there arguing and holding on to their ideas, or they could move around and see the difference in their thoughts. This is perspective (视角).

2The world would be a better place if people understood this. But before you start thinking of how you can start seeing things from the perspective of another person, you need to first know what a life perspective is.

Just like the example, life perspective is the way we see life, including the way we approach life and all that are in our personal experience. 3 What we usually have are two different perspectives on one thing. We have a person saying something is bad and should not be done, and then we have another person saying that “bad” is a strong word to use for the same thing.

4And everyone sees things a lot differently compared to the next person. This makes life more complex because, instead of seeing the similarities we share, we often focus on what is different, which leads to disagreements and fights.5It's likely that these problems no longer annoy you.

A.There are more than 7 billion people in the world.

B.In our life, few things are absolutely right or wrong.

C.It seems difficult to decide which perspective is wrong.

D.Simply make a switch and see from a different perspective.

E.A perspective on life can be shaped, changed, or explained.

F.They are both right, yet they are wrong in the eyes of the other person.

G.And they usually make us believe that we are the one who s holding the truth.

  • 22、Experiment: A Steam-Proof Mirror

Have you noticed that after you take a warm shower or bath, the bathroom mirror is covered with tiny water droplets (水滴) that look like fog?

Here is a cure for foggy mirrors.

    You will need

Bathroom with mirror and shower or bathtub in the same room

Small bottle of glycerin (甘油) (sold in drugstores)

    Liquid glass cleaner

    Paper towel

    Do this

    THE PROBLEM

Take a long, warm shower or bath with the door closed. Look closely at the mirror and wipe the water droplets with your finger. If the mirror is very clean, it will not get very foggy; the problem of a steamed- up mirror is worse when the mirror is dirty or dusty.

    SOLVING IT

Clean half of the mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels, and let it dry.

Use a clean paper towel to rub some glycerin around on the half of the mirror you cleaned until it is covered with a thin layer.

The next time someone takes a long shower or bath, see what the mirror does.

    What happened?

The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy. That is because specks (微粒) of dust on the surface of the glass give the tiny water droplets a place to form. The glass cleaner removed any dust on the mirror and the glycerin gave the mirror a slick (光滑的) surface that didn’t collect dust; the water droplets had no dust particles to form on.

【1】You need the following things to make the experiment except ________.

    A.some glycerin

    B.a bathroom excluding a mirror

    C.paper towel

    D.liquid glass cleaner

【2】What is the right order of the experiment?

    a. Take a long, warm bath or shower with the door closed.

    b. Rub some glycerin around on the half cleaned mirror.

    c. Clean half of the mirror and let it dry.

    d. Prepare some necessary things.

    e. The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy.

    A.a-d-b-c-e

    B.a-b-d-e-c

    C.d-a-c-b-e

    D.d-c-b-a-e

【3】What is the final result of the experiment?

A.The cleaned mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy.

B.If the mirror is very clean, it will not get foggy.

C.A slick surface collects no dust.

D.A steamed-up mirror must be very dirty.

  • 23、A YOUNG girl raises her hand in class to answer the teacher’s question. She proudly gives the correct answer when her classmates start to giggle . Among them, she hears somebody call her a “know-it-all” and sees another roll his eyes. She doesn’t dare to speak up again because confident women are often called“ “bossy”.

Despite decades of advances, it seems that women continue to face prejudice when it comes to holding a position of power.

Laila Farah, an associate professor at DePaul University in Chicago in the US, said the reason for this stereotype lies in history.

“This is an old phenomenon which reflects the fact that many people think females don’t have the same brain capability compared to the male brain,” Farah said.

What’s more, the prejudice is so deep in our society that it has become hard to ignore. “Gender bias is found in the media, schools, the workplace-basically everywhere,” Farah said. “It is learned in infancy and goes from toys chosen to assuming females aren’t good at math.”

Another reason for confident women being called bossy is that “some people aren’t used to women being confident enough to speak their minds”, said high school junior Jessica Bella from Illinois. Embarrassing women by calling them “bossy” has caused some of them to tone down their confidence.

In a study done by the Girls Leadership Institute, a program that helps girls develop strong leadership skills, many girls said the biggest thing holding them back from participating in class was being judged.

“Sometimes, I know I have the right answer in class, but I don’t raise my hand because I don’t want to be annoying, ” said high school junior Emily Grigg from Illinois.

Still, some women have bravely stood up against this stereotype.

“If women in leadership positions are considered to be bossy, then I like to do all I can to prove that wrong. We all have an equal opportunity to present our knowledge no matter how that may come across, ”said Christina Jakubas, an English teacher from Illinois.

Maybe what we need to do is turn being bossy into something empowering for women. After all, bossy people get the job done.

【1】Why does the author write about the experience of a girl raising her hand in class?

A.prove that confident women tend to be bossy

B.explain why bossy women are unpopular in groups

C.explore what stops women from being themselves

D.show how women should fight against gender bias

【2】What do the underlined words ”this stereotype“ in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Females failing to do as well as males in math.

B.Gender bias becoming hard to ignore in society.

C.Women who hold a position of power facing prejudice.

D.Females not having the same brain capabilities as males.

【3】Which of the following would the author probably agree with according to the article?

A.Confident women tend to possess strong leadership skills.

B.Bossy women usually get their jobs done better than men.

C.Females in leadership positions should try to avoid being bossy,

D.Females should ignore negative comments and bravely speak their minds

【4】In which part of the magazine can we read the passage?

    A.Health

    B.Society

    C.Politics

    D.Entertainment

  • 24、Erica James is the author of 23 best-selling novels. Now, the romance novelist shares the books that shaped her career.

    Three Men in a Boat

    Jerome K Jerome

This was the initial book that made me laugh out loud. Anything I’d read previously had been school texts. Reading them was like watching paint dry, but suddenly here was something exciting which clearly shows a great many features of human behaviour. From then on, I fell in love with reading.

    A Woman of Substance

    Barbara Taylor Bradford

I was a mother when I read this novel and was thoroughly swept up in the rags to riches story of Emma Harte. Barbara created a strong sense of family and it sowed a tiny seed within me that I might create my own word though putting pen to paper.

    Saint Maybe

    Anne Tyler

Saint Maybe is a sad example of how one small mistake can result in tragedy for a family. As always with Anne Tyler, there’s sadness and humor within the pages, but the true strength of this novel lies in the author’s ability to write with sympathy

    The Marriage Pact

    Michelle Richmond

The Marriage Pact is a psychological thriller, making me be a nicer wife. Jake and Alice are invited to join an exclusive organization called The Pact, which promises to help them have a lasting marriage. I wanted to write a story like it: Great love for life.

【1】Which book first made Erica James interested in reading?

    A.Three Men in a Boat

    B.A Woman of Substance

    C.Saint Maybe

    D.The Marriage Pact

【2】What is special about A Woman of Substance?

    A.It is her first book.

    B.It makes her more hopeful.

C.It inspires Erica to be a writer.

D.It helps her manage job challenges.

【3】What do the listed books have in common?

    A.They share a sad tone.

    B.They go against textbooks.

C.They are focused on family problems.

D.They are good influences on Erica’s life.

When I was in high school in the 1980s, Jane Fonda’s workout tapes were so popular. But in those days, I was far from a workout participant.

My lack of athleticism finally caught up with me after I quit smoking and put on a lot of weight. By the time I was forty-five, I was 252 pounds. Even at six feet tall, that was way too much weight for my body. I also felt like life was passing me by, but I didn’t know what was next for me. So when I had the opportunity to enter a contest to meet Jane Fonda through a SiriusXM Town Hall event, I crossed my fingers and entered the lucky draw.

To my great surprise, I was one of the winners. I thought this was a sign that my luck was changing. I had always enjoyed Fonda’s movies and was thrilled to have the chance to meet her. So I made up as much as I could, put on my best dress, and brought my best friend Jon along to meet Jane Fonda.

Fonda was seventy-five then and looked great in person, wearing all black and looking decades younger. Not only that, but she was so kind and friendly. She really made me feel special as we discussed a film I had recently seen her in called Peace, Love &Misunderstanding. We posed for a picture together, and I even got the opportunity to ask her a question at the event.

One of the radio network’s organizers promised to send me the photo of us, so I was thrilled when I received an e-mail from her the next day with the Jane Fonda picture. But my excitement turned into embarrassment and disgust when I got a good look at the photo.
