21、 Taking an afternoon nap could keep your brain sharp, a new study has said. Adults ages 60 and older who took afternoon naps showed signs of better mental ability compared to those who didn’t nap, according to a study published in General Psychiatry earlier this week.
Researchers analyzed napping habits in 2, 214 older Chinese people and measured their cognitive abilities using several cognitive tests. Participants took the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, both of which test for memory, language and other cognitive abilities. In every category listed in the study, nappers tested statistically higher on average compared to their non-napping counterparts.
Researchers did not gather data from people under 60, so a correlation cannot be drawn between napping and younger generations. The study also noted that there are conflicting studies about the benefits and risks of napping.
Sleeping behaviors can be affected by a multitude of factors, said Dr. David Neubauer, associate professor at Johns Hopkins University. “Daily routines, medication use and sleep disorders can all play a role in how frequently someone takes a nap.” he said.
Neubauer recommended taking a shorter “power nap” of up to 20 minutes to decrease the chances of transitioning into slow-wave sleep, which makes people feel groggy when they wake up. “Napping can be a healthy part of an older adult’s day”, Neubauer acknowledged, but make sure “sleepiness isn’t due to a treatable nighttime sleep disorder.” Older individuals who want to do all they can to preserve their cognitive functioning should put nighttime sleep first.

22、 Eighteen people in central Kenya are taking the country's secondary education test, called the KCSE. Even under normal conditions, this examination can make a student nervous. But these 18 students may feel especially fearful. They are serving sentences in a top-security prison. And if they do well in the test, they might get to leave the prison.
During the test the inmates(囚犯)sit at school desks at Naivasha Prison. The classroom looks like any other except that the students are wearing prison uniforms. David Noah Okwemba has just finished the examination for history and biology. He says he wants people to know that the prisoners are no longer criminals. Instead, he says they are students.
Prisoners who perform well can have their sentences changed. They may be released early to go to university or find employment. Patrick Mwenda is head officer at Naivasha prison. He says Naivasha works with the high courts to consider the cases of prisoners who get high marks and nine prisoners have been released since 2008 as a result of.their schooling and tests. So far, the releases have gone only to prisoners sentenced to short terms.
Only one other possibility for freedom exists for those facing life in prison and those who have used up all their legal appeals. Kenya's Power of Mercy committee advises about pardons for prisoners. Mr.Mwenda admits the difficulties of getting a pardon. But he says the prison urges students with longer sentences to build skills, which would help them have a good record to show the committee.
Inmate Prince Winsor Mosii does not approve of the whole system."The Power of Mercy is not actually helpful. It is there, but it is not helping in setting us at liberty, even if you have performed." Serving a life sentence for his involvement in an armed robbery, Prince Winsor Mosii took his KCSE exam last year. But he says he does not see much reason to get an education if he is to remain in prison."It is of no good to get or to acquire something of great value skills, and not put it into action."
More than half of the 3,000 inmates at the Naivasha prison are involved in the school program. The inmates themselves choose the subjects and decide the content of the studies. Personal experience makes up an important part of the class discussions.

23、 Children have been thought to be largely spared from the worst of the new coronavirus, but doctors in the U. K. are now warning of a possible connection between CO VID-19 and an unusual inflammatory(发炎性的)syndrome(综合症)in children. However, experts stress that serious illness related to CO VID-19 in children is still very rare overall.
The warning came over the weekend, when the National Health Service (NHS) England issued an alarm informing doctors of a small but growing number of cases of "multisystem inflammatory" disease in children that required intensive care, according to the U. K. Paediatric Intensive Care Society. Some of these children have tested positive for COVID-19, although others have not.
Some of the symptoms in the U. K. cases included fevers, severe pain and skin rashes(皮疹),along with markers of severe inflammation in the blood, The Guardian reported. Some of these children have also needed treatment for heart inflammation. So far, the inflammatory syndrome appears rare-only about a dozen children in the U. K. have been reported to have the syndrome, according to The Guardian, Similar cases have also been reported in Spain and Italy, according to CNN. And in the United States, doctors at Stanford University recently published a case report in the journal Pediatrics describing a 6-month-old infant who was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease and COVID-19.
However, it’s still too early to say that COVID-19 is behind this inflammatory syndrome in children, Gidengil said. More data will be needed to show this. Indeed, the NHS alert noted the possibility that another, yet-to-be-identified pagothen is associated with the inflammatory syndrome. Still, “it’s great that they’re raising an alarm about this so people can be aware," Gidengil said. Although this news might sound worrisome to parents, reports of serious COVID-19 complications remain uncommon in children. "It’s really important to just keep in mind that it’s still really rare for kids to have complications from CO VID at this point," Gidengil added.
【1】What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.Children are free from the COVID-19.
B.COVID-19 has no effect on children,
