  • 21、For many foreigners, finding new friends can case the often overwhelming task of adjusting to a new life abroad. The following countries can definitely feel more welcoming than others.

    Uganda

This East African country received the highest marks for friendliness. According to the InterNations report, 57% of foreigners in Uganda gave ‘general friendliness’ the best possible rating (the global average was 26%). Not only that, not a single respondent ranked this factor negatively. Uganda isn’t without its problems, however, including the occasional power failure, and pollution from old cars.

    Costa Rica

The Central American country ranks high across all factors when it comes to how easily foreigners fit in. Almost nine out of 10 foreigners (89%) are pleased with the general friendliness of the population, and eight out of 10 (79%) feel at home, according to the survey.

“If you make an effort to understand and eagerly accept the Costa Rican culture, you are very much welcomed with open arms and considered a friend.”

    Colombia

This South American hotspot feels like home fast, according to many foreigners.

“The Colombian people are eager to show their country in a positive light and are very receptive and hospitable towards newcomers,” said Anne. Colombia is one of the countries in the world with the lowest percentage of foreign-born residents.

    Oman

As one of the sunniest countries in the world, Oman also has friendly residents who reflect the warm climate. A welcoming culture rooted in faith also leads to an openness with newcomers.

While the cost of living in Oman is growing more expensive, it was recently ranked by Mercer as one of the more affordable places to live in the Middle East.

【1】Which of the four countries has its environmental disadvantage?

    A.Uganda.

    B.Costa Rica.

    C.Colombia.

    D.Oman.

【2】How can you be regarded as a friend while in Costa Rica?

A.By speaking highly of the locals’ friendliness.

B.By showing your country in a positive light.

C.By opening your arms when you meet the locals.

D.By talking with the locals in their language.

【3】What is unique to Colombia compared with the other three countries?

A.The general friendliness of the local people.

B.The high living expenses of the local people.

C.The low percentage of foreign-born residents.

D.The good education of foreign-born residents.

  • 22、Here is a brief guide to every sport at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Alpine skiing, 11 gold medals awarded

The disciplines include downhill, the fastest event; super-G, with more turns added; giant slalom (回转), still more turns; and slalom, the slowest and most technical event.

    Biathlon (冬季两项), 11 golds

Take the endurance test of cross-country skiing and shake it up very few kilometers by having athletes stop to shoot at targets. Too many misses, and skiers must take a penalty lap. Germany, France, Sweden and Norway should dominate the medals.

    Figure skating, 5 golds

The strong Russian team swept the top three spots in the women’s competition at the last world tournament, with now 17-year-old Anna Shcherbakova on top. American Nathan Chen’s potential duel (对决) with Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, the 2014 and 2018 Olympic champion, could be a highlight of the Games.

In the pairs event, Sui Wenjing and Han Cong could bring the gold to the host nation.

    Freestyle sking, 13 golds

There are six disciplines. In the aerials and the new big air event, skiers launch themselves of a ramp and perform flips (空翻) and spins. In half pipe, they perform in a U-shaped bowl, and in slope style, they ski down a course with rails and jumps. In moguls (雪上技巧赛), they ski over a bumpy course and are judged on turns, jumps and speed. The only event that is timed instead of judged is ski cross (障碍追逐赛), in which skiers race against one another in groups of four.

    Speedskating, 23 golds

Long-track speed skating is dominated by the Dutch. They won seven of 14 gold medals in 2018 and eight of 12 in 2014. Short-track provided China with its gold of the 2018 Games. South Korea will also be a major contender.

A few years ago, I was on a plane with my friend, waiting for it to take off. The pilot’s voice was heard throughout the plane: “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. Our engines don’t work. We are going to jump-start them. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and see what happens.”

That was all he said. “See what happens?” Shouldn’t we have had a better plan than that? At that point. I could only laugh nervously. One woman started crying, “Oh no! We are going to crash!’’ There were sighs of hopelessness and anxiety, and we hadn’t even taken off yet.

The pilot even seemed unhappy. He told us our one engine was working double time, and his plan was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air, and what happened? Nothing. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched down than applause burst out as everyone on the airplane breathed a sigh of relief.

While I do prefer planning better than “see what happens” when it comes to flying, it really isn’t such a bad idea for life. All too often, people stop trying to achieve their goals just because they don’t have a guaranteed result. But success will never be guaranteed. The best thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. If your effort is to build a business then get up in the air and see what happens! Don’t give yourself all the reasons why you can’t. Do not wait until you have everything you need. You never will!

If your goal is to start a friendship, say “Hello”, get up in the air and see what happens! The results could be very rewarding.

If your goal is to learn a new skill, get up in the air and see what happens! It might not be as difficult as your think. It could be fun!

When traveling, i hope that my pilot has a more detailed plan than “we will see what happens” But in life, it is not a bad strategy at all.

【1】What was the pilot’s attitude toward the situation?

    A.Disappointed and panicked

    B.Surprised and honest

    C.Comforting and encouraging

    D.Hesitant and weak.

【2】What was the passengers’ reaction when they arrived in Norfolk ?

    A.They were thankful and relieved.

B.They cheered for the pilot’s correct operation.

C.They complained that the plane was not safe enough

D.They just walked off the plane as if nothing had happened.

【3】What can we know from the passage?

A.The plane was delayed because of its wheels.

B.The plane arrived at the airport safely.

C.It was a terrible journey for the author.

D.Most of the passengers remained calm on hearing the bad news

【4】What is the main idea of this article ?

A.“we will see what happens” is not a good plan for pilots

B.Try to have everything prepared before you do something

C.When you want to do something, you have to actually do it

D.Never stop chasing your goals even if they are certain to fail

  • 24、Sending human travelers to Mars would require scientists and engineers to overcome a range of technological and safety obstacles. One of them is the enormous risk posed by particle radiation from the sun, distant stars and galaxies.

Answering two key questions would go a long way toward overcoming that: Would particle radiation pose too serious a threat to human life throughout a round trip to the red planet? And, could the very timing of a mission to Mars help protect astronauts from the radiation?

In a new article published in the journal Space Weather, an international team of space scientists with researchers from UCLA, answers those two questions.

That is, humans should be able to safely travel to and from Mars, provided that the spacecraft has adequate shielding (防护) and the round trip is shorter than approximately four years. And the timing of a human mission to Mars would indeed make a difference: The scientists determined that the best time for a flight to leave Earth would be when solar activity is at its peak, because the most dangerous and energetic particles from distant galaxies are deflected (偏移) during solar maximum.

Imaginably, the average flight to Mars takes about nine months, so it is reasonable that a human mission could reach the planet and return to Earth in less than two years, according to Yuri Shprits, a UCLA research geophysicist and co-author of the paper.:

“This study shows that although space radiation imposes (追使) strict limitations on how heavy the spacecraft can be and the time of launch, and it presents technological difficulties for human missions to Mars, such a mission is viable,” said Shprits, who also is head of space physics and space weather at GFZ Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam,Germany.

【1】What are the two questions about?

A.Getting rid of the technological obstacles.

B.Making astronauts return from Mars safely.

    C.Protecting astronauts from particle radiation.

D.Launching the spacecraft to Mars in shielding.

【2】Which decides the time when humans fly to Mars?

    A.The distance to stars.

B.The length of the round trip.

    C.The size of particles.

    D.The degree of solar activity.

【3】What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Challenging.

    B.Workable.

    C.Rewarding.

    D.Affordable.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

A.Two Questions, a Help to Humans?

B.Particle Radiation, an Obstacle to Mars?

C.Travelling to Mars, an Impossible Mission?

D.A Round Trip to Mars, Technological Advance?
