二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As global climate change becomes more serious, growing crops will be a major challenge. Massive heat waves and droughts (干旱) are already doing harm to farmers: Over the next three decades, California’s San Joaquin Valley alone could lose up to 535, 000 acres of farming land as a result of the shortage of water supplies.

Jennifer Brophy wants to help solve that problem. She’s an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford, and works on methods that she hopes will be used to change crop species so that they can survive severe conditions. At present, Brophy is developing new genetic(基因的) engineering techniques that can help crops survive droughts.

In order to promote plants to respond to extreme climate, Brophy is building what she calls “genetic circuits”. Besides changing the genes within plant cells, this method also changes how and when those genes are activated. If the plant senses a specific sugar, it can express one protein (蛋白质); if it senses another signal, it’ll express a different protein, kicking off an entirely separate chain of events. If both signals are there, the plant may be able to express something else entirely. “Using circuits, you can have plants respond in new ways to all these different inputs,” she says.

“Normally, a plant doesn’t necessarily know what’s coming. It just knows if it’s hot or temperate right now,” says Brophy. This can lead to problems when weather becomes unstable: A plant that usually flowers in spring may flower in winter if there’re a few unseasonably warm days. When temperatures fall quickly again, the flowers die and ruin a year of crops. “It’d be great to be able to communicate with plants to tell them, ‘Hey, you should wait on that flowering, ’” she adds.

Controlling plants’ growth at this level is exciting, but actually putting it into practice is not an easy task. At the moment, Brophy is testing the method in the lab using a small weedy plant called Arabidopsis. She’s still in the process of figuring out how to activate certain genes on command.

【1】Why is California’s San Joaquin Valley mentioned?

    A.Creating warmer living conditions.

    B.Increasing plants’ exposure to nature.

    C.Controlling plants’ growth on demand.

D.Monitoring the protein in the plants.

【3】What does the text say about Jennifer Brophy’s research?

  • 22、As the climate crisis speeds up, Europe is warming faster than any other region, according to a new State of the   Climate in Europe report from the World Meteorological Organization.

The WMO report comes ahead of the UN’s international climate summit in Egypt, and is one in a series of reports over the past several weeks that show how the world is off-track on its climate goals. Not only are countries   missing   the mark on their efforts to reduce planet-warming fossil fuel emissions (排放物), but measurements show temperatures are already skyrocketing.

Some continents are feeling that rise more than others. Wednesday’s report shows temperatures in Europe have increased at more than twice the global average over the past 30 years — at a rate of about 0.5 degrees Celsius per decade.

Recent reports show how the region’s temperature rise is fueling extreme weather.

Year-to-date through July, the number of wildfires in the EU was four times the 15-year average. A deadly, record-breaking heatwave in the UK harmed public health and bent infrastructure (基础设施). Exceptional drought troubled the continent this summer, drying up some of the world’s most economically important rivers. And that drought that came on the heels of some of the most destructive floods Europe has ever seen.

“Europe presents a live picture of a warming world and reminds us that even well-prepared societies are not safe   from impacts of extreme weather events,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a forward on the report.

“European society is vulnerable (易受伤害的) to climate variability and change, but Europe is also at the   forefront of the international effort to address climate change and to develop innovative solutions to adapt to the new climate Europeans will have to live with,” Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.

Taalas said in his forward that although Europe’s pace on cutting planet-warming emissions has been “good,” their   ambition on this front “should be further increased.”

【1】What can we learn about the world’s climate goals from the WMO report?

    A.They are unrealistic.

    B.They are easy to reach.

    C.They are taken seriously.

D.They are far from being achieved.

【2】What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.The economic losses in Europe.

B.The causes of the climate crisis in Europe.

C.The increase of extreme weather in Europe.

D.The most destructive natural disaster in Europe.

【3】What is Buontempo’s attitude towards Europe’s effort to fight climate change?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Intolerant.

【4】What should Europe do to further cut emissions according to Taalas?

    A.Take the lead.

    B.Set a higher goal.

    C.Make better preparations.

    D.Carry on their good work.

  • 23、   A recent study found that eating fish at least twice a week led to a 50 percent reduction in the risk that a child would develop asthma(哮喘) between the ages of 11 and 14 — but only if the children carried a certain type of he fatty acid desaturase(去饱和酶) gene, which is known to be associated with lower levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in the blood.

The researchers suspect that a diet that contains plenty of fish, especially oily varieties such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, could boost long-chain omega-3 levels and may protect against asthma by reducing inflammation(炎症) of the airways.

Of the children in the study with the gene variant(变体), the 25 percent who ate the most fish consumed at least 280 grams a week, equal to two adult-sized amounts. They had half the risk of developing asthma compared with the 25 percent who consumed the least fish—almost none.

Seif Shaheen, senior author of the study, said: “It is possible that a poor diet may increase the risk of developing asthma, but until now most studies have taken ‘snapshot’, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time. Instead, we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn’t.”

The study followed two groups of children, about 4,000 in the southwest of England and about 2,000 in Sweden. The die of the English children was assessed when they were seven and they were tracked until they were 14.

Professor Shaheen said: “Although we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings, it would nevertheless be sensible for children in the UK to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake.”

【1】What is the possible effect of eating fish?

A.To produce the fatty acid desaturase gene.

    B.To increase the long-chain Omega-3 levels.

C.To fight against inflammation of the airways.

D.To reduce the levels of oily varieties in the blood.

【2】How much fish does an adult eat a week accordingly?

    A.70 grams.

    B.140 grams.

    C.280 grams.

    D.560 grams.

【3】What is Shaheen’s study different from most of the other studies?

A.Most previous studies used cameras to do researches mainly.

B.Shaheen’s study did research on more children than ever.

C.Shaheen’s studied the children in a longer period of time.

D.Most previous studies had different results from Shaheen’s study.

【4】What can we know from Professor Shaheen’s words?

A.Eating fish is a good cure for asthma in children.

B.The more fish we eat,the healthier we become.

C.Children in the UK need not take more fish.

D.A poor diet may contribute to developing asthma.

  • 24、   Hong Kong was once home to booming shellfish reefs, but due to over-development and coastal pollution, shellfish populations have declined sharply. Restoring oyster reefs can solve some of the environmental problems typical of coastal development, such as damage from storm surge and loss of biodiversity.

“Globally, we have lost 85% of shellfish reefs, making it the most endangered marine habitat on earth,” said Marine Thomas, Conservation Project Manager, for TNC in Hong Kong. “Most people associate oysters with food, but less well-known is that oysters create reef habitats that support coastal marine life. Only by restoring these lost habitats can we start to bring back some of the associated environmental benefits.”

A primary benefit that healthy oyster reefs contribute to coastal environments is their role as natural water purifiers. This new study found that, just 7 m2 of Hong Kong oyster reef can filter up to one Olympic swimming pool of water each day; a single Hong Kong oyster can filter up to 30 liters of water per hour at summer temperatures, among the highest filtration rates recorded of any oyster species.

Even more importantly, oyster reefs provide habitat and nursery grounds for many native species that are otherwise lost from our shores. Another research found over 80 species on intertidal muddy shores in Deep Bay, 95% of which were found in oyster reefs.

“While we are excited by the biological possibility of restoration, unfortunately the human aspect remains our biggest challenge to bring these habitats hack at scale. Shellfish habitats are still severely under protected in Hong Kong. We are working with Government on gaining more protection and recognition for these important ecosystems and hope to include them in the next Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan(BSAP),” said Ms. Thomas.

【1】What is the problem with Hong Kong introduced in Paragraph 1?

    A.Coastal areas were seriously polluted.

B.Less food can be produced from the sea.

C.A large number of shellfish have died.

    A.Purifying sea water.

    B.Feeding shellfish in them.

    C.Lowering water's temperature.

    D.Filtering swimming pool.

【3】What is Thomas's attitude towards the restoration of oyster reefs?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Negative.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Cautious.

【4】In which part of a website can the text probably be found?

    A.Society.

    B.Environment.

    C.Technology.

    D.Education.

  • 25、   It is understandable that the plan to raise the retirement age has sparked debates, because the move involves individuals’ interests and delayed retirement has been on countries’ ________ for a long time.

The wider the debate is, the clearer the issues will be. The first misunderstanding is that the government is thinking over raising the retirement age to ________ the so-called shortfall in pension funds. The fact is, there is no such thing as a nationwide shortfall in the pension funds, because the situation varies from region to region. So we need a ________ pension system to ensure all regions have adequate pension funds.

Many countries with extra pension insurance are drawing up plans for raising the retirement age. Nowadays, people start working at a later age. So the retirement age should be extended ________ the structural changes of individuals’ life-cycle. For example, many born in the 1980s and 1990s started working at 25 or 30 due to their ________ of higher education. If such people retire at 60, they would have worked for only 35 or 30 years. And given their longer life expectancy, they’ll receive pensions for a longer period of time, putting extra ________ on the pension system.

But since delayed retirement ________ people’s interests, it must be planned carefully. First, the retirement age should be raised, once the leadership decides to do so, ________ across the country. Although rolling out pilot programs before ________ economic and social reforms made them more effective, the retirement age cannot be raised in different regions in a targeted manner, because that’ll not be helpful to ________ development in different regions.

Second, some people are against raising the retirement age because they feel they may be forced to work for a few “extra years”. As has been learned from other countries’ ________, some policies can be adopted to help accept the delayed retirement plan. ________, it should be made clear to employees that the longer they contribute to the pension funds, the higher pension they’ll draw after retirement—and early retirement will result in ________ pension.

Third, it is important to balance the interests of different groups. China’s current retirement system distinguishes between men and women, and the employees of State-owned enterprises and privately-owned companies have different opinions on delayed retirement. The new retirement policy needs to be ________ to all groups.

The debate on delayed retirement shows that reforms of social policies will face more challenges and the challenges need political wisdom and practical strategies to________.
