  • 21、Mark asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?” Mark’s father knew that few boys would want someone like Mark, mentally and physically disabled, on their team, but the father still approached to ask the boys if Mark could play. They exchanged glances with each other and said, “We’ll try to put him in to bat.”

Mark struggled over to the team’s bench and his father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in heart. The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted.

In the bottom of the final inning, Mark was scheduled to be at bat. Everyone knew that a hit was almost impossible. The first pitch (投) came and Mark missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to throw the ball softly towards Mark. As the pitch came in, Mark swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The pitcher could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman, but he just threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, beyond the reach of all teammates. The audience and the players from both teams started screaming, “Mark, run to first!” Never in his life had Mark ever run that far but made it to first base, wide-eyed and shocked.

By the time Mark rounded towards second base, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time, understood the pitcher’s intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head.

All were screaming. “Mark, run to third.” As Mark rounded third, all were on their feet, crying, “Mark, run home!” Mark ran to home, stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who won the game for his team. Tears rolled down the father’s cheeks.

That day, the boys from both teams helped bring true love and humanity into this world.

【1】Why did Mark’s father, not expecting much, still asked if Mark could join the team?

A.Because he noticed some of the boys on the field were friendly.

B.Because he knew some of the boys on the field knew Mark well.

C.Because he understood Mark did need a feeling of being accepted.

D.Because he guessed Mark’s disability would affect the boys’ decision.

【2】What does the underlined word “intentions” in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The pitcher wanted to help Mark win the game.

B.The pitcher pretended to throw the ball high and far.

C.The pitcher looked forward to winning the game for his team.

D.The pitcher had intended to throw the ball to the first baseman.

【3】Which has nothing to do with Mark’s becoming the hero for his team?

A.Some of the opposing players ran to help him.

B.The pitcher did not throw the ball to the first baseman.

C.The opposing players failed to stop his running to home.

D.The audience and the players from both teams cheered for him.

【4】What is the theme of the story?

A.True human nature could be realized in the way we treat each other.

B.Everyone can develop his team spirit in sports and please his parents.

C.The results of the game should not be the only concern of the players.

D.Everyone has his own strength even if mentally or physically disabled.

  • 22、   Turtles have an unfortunate habit of eating plastic objects floating in the sea. These then cannot be broken down and digested, and may ultimately kill them.

It is widely assumed that this special liking for plastics is a matter of mistaken identity. Floating plastic bags, for instance, look similar to jellyfish, which many types of turtles love to eat. Yet lota of plastic objects that end up inside turtles are not similar to jellyfish. Joseph Pfaller of the University of Florida therefore suspects that the smell of micro-organisms (微生物) which grow on floating plastic objects fools turtles to feed.

Researchers at the University of California noticed that certain chemicals, which are released into the air by micro-organism — colonised plastics, are those which many seabirds sniff to track down food. These chemicals mark good places to hunt because they indicate an abundance of the seaweed and bacteria. Since turtles are known to break the surface and sniff the air when swimming towards their feeding areas, Dr. Pfaller indicated that they are following these same chemicals, and are fooled into thinking that floating plastic objects are edible.

To test that idea, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They arranged for 15 of the animals, each around five months old, to be exposed, in random order, to four smells delivered through a pipe to; the air above an experimental area. The smells were: the vapour from deionised (去离子) water; the smell of turtle-feeding meal; the smell of a clean plastic bottle; and the smell of a similarly plastic bottle that had been kept in the ocean for five weeks to allow seaweed and bacteria to grow on it. Two of the smells-the smell of meal and that of five-week-old bottles-proved far more attractive to the animals than the others.

On the face of it, then, the turtles were responding to the smell of old bottles as if it were the smell of food. In an unpolluted ocean, pretty well anything which had this smell would be edible-or, at least, harmless. Unfortunately, five-week-old plastic bottles and their like are not.

【1】What is most people's opinion on turtles' special habit?

    A.Turtles prefer jellyfish to plastics.

B.Turtles enjoy the taste of plastics.

C.Turtles like being fed with plastic tools.

D.Turtles choose to eat plastics for a mistake.

【2】What does the underlined word “edible" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Fit to eat.

    B.Pleasant to smell.

    C.Far to reach.

    D.Easy to digest.

【3】What can we infer from Dr. Pfaller's research?

A.Many seabirds can track the food.

B.Most animals find food through smells.

C.Two smells are especially favored by turtles.

D.The favored smell leads turtles to seek for food.

【4】Why did the author mention the unpolluted ocean at last?

A.To explain why the ocean is polluted.

B.To ask for people to feed turtles proper food.

C.To arouse the awareness of protecting the ocean.

D.To show his agreement on Dr. Pfaller's research.

  • 23、   We’re loving the sea to death. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail, because we’ve not been thinking about design of structures with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.

Johnson, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” — the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.

Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbors around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.

It’s a far cry from the days when huge numbers of old tyres were thrown into the sea to build “artificial reefs”. Those early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.

1What do we know about “hard engineering”?

A.It has improved sea environment. B.It controls the influence of sea well.

C.It has failed to achieve its purpose. D.It makes living under the sea possible.

2What does the underlined word “contuse” in Paragraph 1 mean

    A.Injure. B.Heat. C.Defend. D.Involve.

3Which of the following is a form of “blue engineering”?

A.Growing plant life on concrete buildings. B.Building rocky shores with 3D printers.

C.Creating an artificial reef with old tyres. D.Building structures benefiting sea creatures.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Two ways of sea engineering. B.The green engineering movement.

C.Construction of artificial reefs. D.Research on blue engineering.

  • 24、I was so worried about handing my little boy over during his first week of school, but you made it easier. You smiled at him like a mother would at her own child. You showed warmth and your hugs were always on offer. After a day in class with you, Charlie would come home singing. Whenever I hear Do Your Ears Hang Low or see him stretching to the sky when singing about the days of the week, I will think of you.I didn't tell you at the time, but I loved your morning song so much that I implemented it in my own class (I'm a teacher, too).

When you saw I was troubled, you hugged me with your smile and I knew everything would be OK. You made parents feel as cared for as our children. In the short time I knew you; you taught me about the type of teacher I desire to be. I can't understand why you've been taken from us. Telling Charlie was one of the hardest things I've had to do.I'm not sure he fully understands, but he told me he loved you and has been asking whether your"robot powers"will work in heaven.

A friend once told me white feathers are angels telling us that loved ones in heaven are well. On the first day collecting the children without you,a white feather floated through the sleet (雨夹雪). Watching the younger ones bounce and gigle as they tried to catch it was beautiful.

I wish I had told you all of this when you were with us.I hope that you knew how you brought happiness to everyone you met and how loved you were. Goodbye, Dear Friend.
